how to be a good cis ally

DO NOT:

force yourself into the trans community

expect praise for treating someone properly

argue with trans people over their identities

argue with trans people over their oppression or experience with such

act as if you have any authority in the trans community

argue with trans people over intra-community issues

expect your opinion to be held over that of a trans persons

expect all of us to be the same

expect all of us to agree with you

use your trans friends to excuse your own actions

believe that just because one trans person agrees with you that you are right

disrespect a trans person because you dont agree with them

misgender a trans person because you dont agree with them

stop supporting trans people just because one trans person disagreed with you

DO:

respect the trans people you know

meet different trans people, not just certain offsets of the community

remain as a supportive force outside of the community

remember who is being oppressed and who isnt

remember that trans experiences come before yours as far as defining transness goes

use the right pronouns (even if someone isnt “nice”)

leave intra-community issues to us, we will handle them

do what you can to make your trans friends feel comfortable in their skin and validated
