the reason community holds up so well (for the most part) over a decade later is a simple as good storytelling

like for instance the pentultimate and finale episodes of season two, ‘a fistful of paintballs’ and ‘for a few paintballs more’:

they’re already different from the original paintball episode in season one, which follows a fairly straightforward post-apocalyptic setup (disguised as: the group faces off against their classmates for priority registration). aside from britta and jeff’s sexual tension and the focus on shirley’s private life, there isn’t much else to an, admittedly good, episode

but the season two paintball arc shows us a much more layered storyline

we are introduced first of all to 1) the premise (a paintball game in a western motif for a $100k prize)

but then we have the underlying emotional core, which is breadcrumbed to us in sporadic bursts throughout the episode 2) that the group is voting on whether or not to excommunicate pierce from the group, due to his bullying and juvenile behavior. this is told through the eyes of our episode narrator annie, whose guilt carries with her

beside that lies layer 3) the conspiracy. that city college has staged this whole operation in a ploy to entice students to trash their own school for free. this is hinted to us from the beginning in both flashbacks and rumors about the black rider ‘who was that guy? he’s handsome… like network tv handsome’ and ‘does he even go to school here?’ 

so we have the apparent layer (paintball game), the emotional backdrop (the tension between pierce and the group), and the hidden layer (city college’s sneaky conspiracy) all overlapping simultaneously

but the episode remains light, despite this massive amount of information presented to the viewer. there’s a reoccurring joke poking fun at jeff’s vanity (come on guys, my forehead isn’t really that big / it’s not small) and fourth-wall breaks humanity in the bad guys when pierce fakes a heart attack (buddy, are you okay?!) (think of the final battle scene in the incredibles, where the parents have a spat over driving instructions)

it’s solid double-vision storytelling. all of the opening lines function on their own, because they’re all in character (annie to jeff: you haven’t changed a bit, jeff to annie: we exclude him BECAUSE he’s a dick), but once the first layer is lifted, we see all these lines in the second light: a group indeed “going through their own thing” while the larger picture plays out
