Dear Mr. Ford
The Ford government has discontinued funding to the College of Midwives of Ontario. This is unacceptable.
Dear Mr. Ford,
I am writing to you on behalf of myself as well as midwives, midwifery students, and midwifery clients. I am deeply disappointed in your government’s decision to discontinue funding to the College of Midwives of Ontario. This decision simply exemplifies to me that your government is indifferent to the healthcare concerns of women and children.
You should be aware that midwives in…

Sewing Your Own Baby Sling
Sewing Your Own Baby Sling
In senior year, students are expected to conduct postpartum home visits on their own. Part of the duties of these home visits is to weigh the newborn and ensure they are gaining an appropriate amount of weight.
Babes don’t care if the stitching isn’t great. As long as it’s strong!
It seems old school but midwives use this traditional scale and sling method. You may see quintessential photos of…

Taking Midwifery Pages
So you’re finally taking first call, congratulations. Now what? Clients don’t page just because their waters have broken or they think they’re in labour… they also page because their baby hasn’t peed all day or they fell down walking their dog.
What do you say? What your plan? How do you manage answering questions on the fly?
The simplest thing to do is to make a paging booklet with possible…

The Midwifery Bible
What is a midwifery bible? A midwifery bible is a binder or electronic catalogue of everything you think is important to support you in your clinical practice. That can be simply a bunch of informed choice discussions or as detailed as you’d like even including all your drug cards and a “Taking Midwifery Pages” document.
Why make a bible? Personally, I’m someone who likes to have things written…

Between Two Worlds
Midwives exist between two worlds but don't forget your midwitchery in third year.
I’ve discovered this year that midwives really do practice between two worlds. Our schooling is structured within a particular culture, one of teachings passed on by grandmothers of the profession but also filled with rigorous scientific method and evidence-based practice. We speak midwifery to our clients but speak traditional obstetrics when we consult. We fiercely protect our clients from harm…

Choice in Obstetrics
Midwifery philosophy stands upon three main pillars. They are continuity of care, choice of birthplace, and informed choice. These ideas shape the philosophy in which we aim to practice in attempts to be alternative to traditional obstetrics. Continuity of care refers to the idea that it matters who cares for you during your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period. We aim to have the same team of…

School starts again this week... Having six weeks off has been way too awesome.
I've just gotten out of an abusive relationship and now I'm trying to find myself. For the past 4 years I was just an extension of him, and now I want to embrace who I am as a person but I don't know how. Do you have any tips?
First off - congratulations!!! What a huge, difficult, exhausting first step you’ve made! You deserve kittens and rainbows and flowers.
(yes, I did just spend 20 minutes crafting that masterpiece in honor of you.)
First step: if possible, cut off all contact with your abuser.
Re-establish a sense of safety - move in with someone you trust, get a new phone number, get an order of protection, request that your abuser not be allowed in your workplace/school, alert trusted friends and family members not to give out your new contact information.
Ignore the well-meaning but wrong advice from people who don’t know better to stay in contact or stay with the abuser.
Remind yourself that you deserve the best.
Practice putting yourself first. Take up space in public places, make other people get out of your way. Expect and request the best from services that you’re paying for (politely).
Go out by yourself or with supportive friends/family to buy a few nice new things for yourself. Either get something you’ve been hankering for, or if that feels too overwhelming, go out and get something that feels good to you.
Treat yourself to things that feel good to your body - massages, baths, exercise classes, doctors appointments, acupuncture, therapy, dance classes, etc.
Get support.
You’ve gotten so far - it’s good to ask for help.
Reach out to friends and family that you trust. Make standing dates with them - walk in the park every Saturday morning, dinner and Game of Thrones every Sunday night, etc.
Find a therapist. Really. They’re awesome.
Find a support group.
Take time.
Go on a trip if you have the funds. Go somewhere you’ve always wanted to go, or just open an atlas and point.
Take a break from work or school if you can, even if it’s just a couple days, and let yourself do things that feel nourishing to you.
Only after you feel like you’ve had a good break from real life, try to get back into a regular schedule.
Learn about yourself.
Take classes. Try: yoga, kick boxing, calligraphy, singing, dance, horseback riding, painting, sculpture, jewelry making, carpentry, botany, cooking, reiki, herbalism, etc.
Journal every day, even if it’s just a short thought or a recounting of the day. “Went to work today, had salmon for lunch.”
Some people find great solace in connecting with spirituality or religion. Look for a church, mosque, synagogue, coven, meeting, or other spiritual center near you.
There are so many things for you to do, and people near you will be able to help you the best. Find someone you know and love who knows and loves you to help you make a plan and a calendar. You deserve the world, and you will get it.
Remember, you will feel better eventually, even if it doesn’t feel like it now.

Surviving Crossfit
I know what you’re thinking… “great, now this chick is into CrossFit and we’re never going to read about anything else on this blog except for midwife WODs…” cue the eye roll and unfollow… but wait! I’m not looking to tell you about how many times I go to the gym or how much I can lift (a lot), but I’m going to write about something a little different: surviving CrossFit. I love being a midwifery…
