Hey guys. I was walking my clown on the sidewalk today, minding my own business, when someone else who was walking their clown brought their clown over to say hello WITHOUT EVEN ASKING ME. Their clown was a much larger breed of clown than my own (some sort of sport/working breed I presume) while my clown is a much smaller "toy" breed. My clown HATES other clowns, as it is of the solitary variety, and began to panic (honking and throwing handkerchiefs out of its many orifices and pockets WILDLY in self defense). It was quite the conundrum and the other owner had the nerve to be annoyed with ME and MY CLOWN for not wanting our clowns to be "friends". Completely irresponsible and UNBELIEVABLE.

It took several hours of playing circus music and specialized Clown Treats (my clown is on a special diet recommended by the clown doctor due to his allergies) to properly calm him down. I'm glad my little guy is okay but the NERVE of some people.

Please do not approach another clown owner on the street with your clown without asking first and checking to make sure it is okay!!! Ugh!!!

Look, it's like when people mock the ex prez for being fat when FASCIST is right there. Assholes have plenty of earned flaws to point out, making fun of body shapes and types is just lazy and cruel and likely to hit innocent bystanders. And lots of people manage to be decent people while also being fat. The fat isn't the problem, the fascism is. It's not just pointless, it's markedly less effective at calling attention to the real evils.

I'm curious - other autistic people - what/who makes you feel safe?

It could be anything, it could be a show, a comfort item, a type of weather, a texture, a person, a song, literally anything that makes you feel safe and able to be your authentic autistic self. Bonus points if this thing makes you want to unmask/makes you unmask.

For me it's probably my friend Parker! They're also autistic, and it's not that I don't have other autistic friends, but for some reason Parker is the only person I've felt 100% safe and comfortable fully unmasking around and they've said the same to me! Also recess by Melanie Martinez! It's my favorite song for when I need to calm down from sensory overload or anything like that, I find the key, they lyrics, the sound effects, all incredibly soothing!

So, basically, eye contact can feel uncomfortable for an autistic due to an overreaction of the subcortical system.

This system reacts with everyone, but goes haywire for Autistics, creating the feeling of discomfort that we get.

And since it's a reaction in the brain and not a learnt reaction, we cannot become habituated to eye contact and continued and forced eye contact (such as that is done in some forms of ABA therapy) can cause anxiety.

Why do those with autism avoid eye contact? Imaging studies reveal overactivation of subcortical brain structures in response to direct gaze

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder often find it difficult to look others in the eyes as they find eye contact uncomfortable or stres
