Tonight I looked at myself for the first time in a long time.
I don't mean a glance to see if my outfit is OK, or to fix my hair, or while I was brushing my teeth.
I was kind to myself today. I made a simple face scrup and really exfoliated my flaky dry forehead. I shaved my legs (because I personally enjoy feeling like a dolphin). I put on that good smelling lotion. I moisturized my face. Tomorrow I might out on make up just to do it.
But tonight I got out of the shower and I really looked at myself. I grabbed at my rolls, my lumps, my oddly shaped butt. I ran my fingers over old stretch marks and I paused as I reached to new ones near my belly button.
No matter how much weight I've gained there has always seemed to be this belt of skin where my rolls would meet but it never changed. Until her. Until this soft lumpy body grew a whole new body inside of it. As I touched the fresher, brighter scars I was not ashamed of them. I am proud. This is the proof that this body is strong. That it carried the most precious gift I've ever given or received. And this this body birthed her. It welcomed her into the world.
Tonight I thanked my body. I reminded myself that this body is strong and beautiful and capable and deserving of love from itself.
