As the teams begin packing their bags and making final preparations before flying to Kissimmee this weekend we look at the teams that they will be facing on their first day of competition.
Austin Quidditch
Currently ranked at 45, Austin Quidditch is coming in as a mid level team in their pool. They were placed in Pool 8 and shall be going against the following teams:
No. 5 Boston University (Boston, MA)
No. 22 Villanova University (Villanova, PA)
No. 39 Central Michigan University (Mount Pleasant, MI)
Tec Quidditch (Monterrey, NL, MX)
Austin Quidditch will have to be at least third in their pool to make it into the second day of play. There are some mixed reviews of how they will do but the captains of Austin Quidditch have no doubt that they will be making it into bracket play on day two.
Texas Quidditch
Currently ranked at 2nd in the world, the varsity squad from UT is the number one seed in pool 10 and shall be facing the following teams:
No. 20 Tufts University (Medford, MA)
No. 40 Ohio State University (Columbus, OH)
No. 50 University of Richmond (Richmond, VA)
No. 92 University of Southern Mississippi (Hattiesburg, MS)
Texas Quidditch will have to make top three in their pool to move onto day two of play, which should be no problem for the team.
These are the teams that Austin Quidditch and Texas Quidditch must play and beat if they plan on making it to day two of World Cup.
Texas Quidditch is more than just the two traveling teams that play competitively in the IQA, it is also the four house teams that play intramurally here on campus. The first house team we're featuring is Gryffindor which is currently captained by Becky Schmader and Kenny Chilton.
When Texas Quidditch first came into being, Gryffindor was originally the name for the varsity team on campus. They would compete against the other houses but to be on the team you had to be on varsity. Eventually Gryffindor slowly faded out and only three houses remained on campus to compete intramurally. In Fall 2012, Texas Quidditch officers realized that a fourth house team was needed due to the growth of the organization. It was at this time that Kenny Chilton and Becky Schmader became captains of the newly reformed Gryffindor.
Kenny and Becky lead Gryffindor with the idea that it is fun that we are supposed to be having out on the quidditch pitch and it is because of this that they have come to call Gryffindor, GryfFUNdor.
Stay tuned this weekend as the two quidditch teams at The University of Texas at Austin travel to World Cup VI and compete against teams from around the world. Follow us here on tumblr or on our Twitter for updates on how the teams do!
