it would be so funny if/when dw comes back they simply never address the billie piper cliffhanger
My favorite Star Trek Captains as Troubled Bird Memes
i have to say tho i am feeling more sympathetic towards RTD than most people seem to be. calling in Billie Piper was, by his own admission, a desperate hail mary to avoid the show looking like it had no future. i would imagine the lack of a script is bcos he was never u know paid to write one rather than bcos he simply didn't bother. man doesn't work for free and he has other projects on the go.
i can see why he opted not to come up with a formal plan for the special until he got confirmation that he was definitely going to be writing it. & i do get why from a PR perspective he opted to act like everything was OK rather than publicly be like 'we have no plan'. i don't think he's the real villain of this story.
like to my understanding the root cause of everything going wrong right now is the Disney deal going south and I don't think the Disney deal was his idea nor do i think it going poorly was necessarily his fault. yes he could have made a better 2.5 seasons of dr who but the most Reviled part of it (Reality War ending) happened because Disney was refusing to commit to a third season. so uh. yeah.
i don't think this is a story with a clear individual villain tbh like i don't blame Disney for pulling out as clearly they anticipated this being a more profitable venture than it was and I don't blame the BBC for entering into the Disney Devil's Bargain in the first place as clearly they were financially struggling to make the show. im not really convinced RTD doing a better job would have salvaged the situation.
there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.
short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.
meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.
HI GABE !!!!!!!!!
May I humbly request “queer” and “Clara, my Clara” (if you haven’t done em yet ofc)
So "queer" is queued and if I'm counting right it should appear *counts on my fingers* L, G, B, T- on Friday

Never making a random-shaped design again. It took me like 3 times the usual amount of time I spend on a design lol
Another kind of diversity we need in writing is protagonists without love interests. Give me adults with full-fledged stories that don't include falling in love.
Today is the anniversary of MOTH TO A FLAME being released, which means it's been an entire year of this trilogy being out in the world, finished, done, and almost three years since THE BUTTERFLY ASSASSIN first took flight.
It's strange, being now this far removed from a series I was writing for my entire adult life, and which it sometimes felt like I would be writing forever. It was hard to let go, and yet it very much felt like the story was complete, and I'd brought Isabel's arc to the point I wanted to bring it to. Recently, I was listening to the books as audiobooks -- I'm not a big audiobook listener in general, but it helps me gain some distance and perspective on my own work, so it doesn't feel so much like mine. And I was surprised how impressed I was by what I found, coming back to it now after a year, after three years. I'm proud of this story, of these characters, of the world I created.
It's been hard, though. The glossy stacks and spirals make everything look professional and social media ready, but sometimes it feels like MOTH TO A FLAME never quite got a chance to fly. Being released after Twitter became unusable but before Bluesky became a meaningful replacement was one challenge (and I think teenagers, my target audience, are still not on Bluesky!), as well as the state of the world, the cost of living crisis, etc. I don't think it's made it into as many libraries as the first two books, particularly as an ebook or audiobook, and I haven't had the chance to do much in the way of events, either. Plus, although the first two books were translated into French, sales weren't high enough for the same to happen to this one. So after ten years of working on this trilogy, it can feel a little like it just sort of ... ended, with many readers not realising the end existed, or having the chance to read it for themselves.
But I did get the chance to tell the story I wanted to tell, for which I'm grateful. And every now and again, I do get a message from a reader who has just finished it, to whom the resolution of Isabel's story meant something. And that, in turn, means something profound to me.
Two years since MTAF came out. The above still stands.
Sorry no, it is REALLY funny to me that in S1E8 of Torchwood (They Keep Killing Suzie), Jack says that Gwen taking Suzie out of the compound is “getting herself fired” like there exists literally any precedent whatsoever for consequences inside this organization
because let us review, in roughly chronological order, the absolutely staggering catalogue of behavior before this action that has apparently not resulted in termination
We are introduced to the entire cast having stolen alien artifacts from work to use in their personal lives, and even after those specific items get returned it’s revealed they ALSO just casually have other stuff. Everyone at Torchwood steals from work like they’re employees at a Spirit Halloween.
Gwen accidentally unleashed an alien organism that killed people through the power of really intense orgasms because she unsafely threw a chisel at another coworker.
Owen used alien technology to stalk and psychologically torment someone outside of work hours which, granted, the guy sucked, but from an HR perspective that sentence alone should have caused the building to implode into a legal singularity.
Ianto secretly smuggled an entire Cyberman into the base, concealed it for who knows how long, continued defending her after she tried converting both the scientist he hired AND Gwen, and somehow retained employment afterward like this was a slightly awkward misunderstanding at a team meeting.
Owen left the keys to Torchwood’s branded SUV sitting in an unlocked vehicle with all of their classified alien tech and sensitive information inside.
Tosh read everyone’s minds without consent and later attempted to sneak her alien girlfriend into the secret underground alien bunker.
and THIS is the environment where Jack suddenly decides “whoa now Gwen, this crosses a line”
my sibling in the cosmos what line.
This organization has the structural integrity of wet cardboard. There is no line. There are vague suggestions of professionalism floating somewhere in the distance like ghosts on the horizon while everyone continues committing increasingly unbelievable workplace violations on company time.
I genuinely do not believe a fireable offense exists at Torchwood unless you perhaps arrive to work on time, emotionally stable, and capable of respecting boundaries, at which point the building itself would probably eject you for not fitting the established ecosystem.
i like when you can tell a screenwriter thinks that being good at computers is all about how fast you type. you need to out-computer your enemies with your superior wpm. whoever types the fastest is the most elite hacker in the cyberspace. its all up to you, johnny quickfingers. we're counting on you.

Goodness is not goodness that seeks advantage. Good is good in the final hour, in the deepest pit. Without hope, without witness, without reward. Virtue is only virtue in extremis.
Look at me writing an actual doctor who quote in Gallifreyan for once
One thing about 00Q that really does delight me is that I see them as a country-boy4city-boy pair. Which is potentially really funny.
Like, I do think Bond has spent a fair portion of his life in urban environments, and he enjoys a lot about the convenience and culture of a city. And I do think that, with practice and careful exposure-therapy, Q could learn to tolerate and be reasonably comfortable in the country.
But I don't think Q is ever able to shake off his city-boy roots. I think he very much has a reaction of Why Would Anyone Want To Do That whenever Bond takes him to the country and tries to persuade him to swim in a cold lake with eels and frogs, or sit outside (with the mosquitoes!!) while Bond guts a fish and grills it for their dinner.
Q accepts that his beloved enjoys this sort of thing. And sure, the nights are peaceful. And sure, it's nice to know that they won't be bothered by anyone except the squirrels. And sure, Q does enjoy the opportunity for birdwatching.
But he still has a deep-seated notion that We Created Civilization For a Reason, James, and why would a person get up for an ice-cold lake swim at 5am when they could simply Not Do That. Why would anyone WANT to catch and then clean a fish when they could simply purchase a nice fillet from a shop?? Pre-cleaned??? No need to touch fish guts????
Bond's passion for this sort of thing is deeply puzzling to Q, but Q bears with it as best he can.
Britpick of the week: “Bloody fuck!” is not a natural way to swear. “Bloody hell!” or “For fuck’s sake!” are good general replacements, but there are lots of regional and demographic variations out there too.
