Marvin and Marvin, watching the original series, so fucking goooood!!
It really always sounds weird. Even online. It SOUNDS WEIRD as I read it, knowing you either had to fake a blaccent or worst... Just saying it in your Susan's daughter/Chad's son voice.
Cultures and language mix, thatās just facts and common sense. Thereās no way to prevent that. Unless you want to freeze human evolution somehow, or just separate cultures physically.
Richie was not closeted gay, he was Bi
Richie obviously thought Beverly was super hot in the first film and was attracted to women as well. Heās also attracted to men, as made obvious by the second film. Heās Bi. He really liked Eddie as a kid and may have a preference towards men, but he could go either way. Beep Beep, Bitches ššš
Big Mouth Fucked up with Jay
Theyāre trying to forgive child abuse and neglect AND theyāre making it Jays responsibility to make his life better when heās a 13 year old boy. They literally said that he needed to teach his family how to love and be a good family. Iām sorry, thatās not empowering, thatās victim blaming and disgusting.
Jay was physically and emotionally neglected and abused his entire life. His family literally left him alone for weeks. Heās obviously failing school, they blame ADHD but he has no support system or anybody that actually cares about him in his own family. And weāre being told he just needs to try harder?
I love the show, but that episode really made me feel disgusted with the writers. People are getting pissed by a screwed up explanation of what pansexual means but everybody is steam rolling over telling an abused kid to just love his family harder
Okay, so itās no surprise to me that skekGra was rejected and punished by the other Skeksis for daring suggest they reunite with their other halves, but what the fuck is the Mysticsā excuse?
Did they seriously listen to urGohās recount of his vision, immediately dismiss him and then kick him out of the Valley??? If they didā¦fuck the Mystics.
(Not urVa though. The Archer was amazing. RIP.)
Itās a sad, but beautiful story of two halves of the same whole finding solace in each other when no one else wants them. The Dark Half is able to earn the same dream wrinkles the Mystics possess on his snout. The Light Half becomes darker in colour over time. The Crystal of Truth lived up to its name, showed them the right path to take and all they could do is wait for the right Gelfling to come along and save the day.
The mystics have a deeper connection with Thra than most creatures. They believe heavily in fate.
The only way they can reconnect with the mystics is with the power of the crystal, and it may only be with the great Conjunction every 1000years. They also need to choose the right crystal shard and only a gelfling can fix the crystal because only the gelfling can fix the crystal. Though they can hear the song of Thra, the mystics do NOT return to Thra and are not a part of Thra at all. They are aliens from outside our system.
So while all the mystics May approve of rejoining with the skeksis, they themselves donāt have the power to make that happen. They need the shard, a gelfling, and possibly a power source that is only available once every 1000 years. A better option for them would have been to kill themselves so that the skeksis couldnāt come to power.
Skeksis arenāt evil and mystics arenāt good
Change my mind
Skeksis and mystics arenāt good and evil. Mystics are peaceful. Skeksis are children and chaotic. Skeksis donāt care about anything outside themselves, they are just selfish.
Mystics could have killed all the skeksis by killing themselves and they didnāt. Theyāre doing everything they can to get what they want: a rejoining to the skeksis. Thatās their goal and theyāre doing and allowing anything possible to make that happen. They knew the skeksis were killing people, they knew it was a sacrifice they could have made, but they chose to keep their lifeās during the entire gelfling genocide and for 50 years until the Dark Crystal movie so they could achieve their wish of rejoining the skeksis. They were being selfish.
Skeksis goal is to live forever and theyāre doing anything they canāt to make that happen. They donāt want to die, itās terrifying to them. They were willing to maintain peace with the Gelflings as long as they could, which is upwards of 950 years, Thatās the length of time from the last Conjunction to the time were at in Age of Resistance. They were willing to kill the gelfling when that was their last choice to keep survival. Yeah they did it with glee, but people exterminate entire beehives with thousands of bees just so they donāt have to relocate. To them the Gelflings are bugs, temporary creatures. The skeksis assumes that if they just killed enough gelfling they would be able to live forever and at a certain point killing anything most likely wouldnāt have been necessary if they drank enough. They were willing to kill them all, but it wasnāt for the fun of killing.
Both of them were selfish.
A thing that I loved about the Skeksis is that they do care (at least a bit) for their kind:
- SkekZok says they should warn SkekSa , SkekUng and SkekNa about the Gelfling rebellion.
- SkekOk lamments SkekLachās death
- And ,even though Iām like 80-ish % sure the Skeksis tried so save SkekMal just because he was the freaking MVP (and to show Skeksis donāt die), it was quite touching to see them try so hard to save him and mourn him in their own way.
Theyāre not evil, just rash and childish. Theyāre not mature like the mystics. Theyāre short cited and eternally hungry. Their biggest desire is to escape death, at any means necessary. They donāt thrive off of chaos and rage, they just donāt want to die and they donāt value anybody or anything more than them
Anyone else hate the romance between Deet and Rian?
The show takes place over like a month or two. His girlfriend died like 2 weeks ago and heās already hot for this other chick and trying to come on to her. Just feels weird and undermines the relationship with Mira, who he was practically engaged to. And heās definitely more interested in Deet from the very beginning
One of the neat things that I want Dark Crystal to explore is the concept of a Mystic with Skeksis traits. We know that, thats to the Heretics relationship with the wanderer, The scientists affection for his pet bird and The Marinersā affection for the Sifa Gelfling, that Skeksis are able to (somewhat) experience the good traits that Mystics typically posses. that, even though theyāre still the bastard dodoās we all know and love, theyāre able to still tap into their good emotions.Ā
Iād be neat for Dark Crystal to explore that concept with a mystic. Mystics are typically depicted as good, wholesome beings who move slow and are generally pleasent to be around. I wanna see what they do with a Mystic who holds some of the skeksis traits.Ā
Maybe the Mystic will be the Carl Fredricken/Squidward of the mysticsā not necessary evil and harmful, but just tired and annoyed at everything and just wanting to be left alone with his own plants or stones or whatever his obsession is. When a gelfling comes along wanting advice, heāll sort-of shoo them away, pushing them back with his walking stic until theyāre standing outside his cave before shutting a wooden blindfold thing that acts like a door.Ā
Skeksis arenāt bad and mystics arenāt good. Thatās too black and white. Mystics are peaceful. They just understand sacrifice
Skeksis are hungry and selfish. They rationalize like 7 year olds. Kids arenāt good or evil, theyāre just irrational creatures driven by impulse and donāt know or care enough to think about the world outside themselves.
The skeksis are ultimate trying to avoid death, which most people could sympathize with. Death is terrifying and these are creatures that canāt accept that they ARE mortal do theyāre striving for immortality at any cost. They were willing to work peacefully with Gelflings for almost 400 trine from the show, the great conjunction was 950 years ago from when the show was and the movie takes place 50 years later than that. So they were willing to keep peace as long as it didnāt inconvenience them.
You could argue mystics arenāt good. A good person doesnāt just sit back and let the world go to hell and they could have killed themselves the whole time to stop the skeksis. I donāt think of them As good
A picture that caught my eye because it encapsulatesĀ so well the reason why atheism is so wide-spread in our society. Here are some basic assumptions and attitudes of modern Western society:
The individual is alone by default, any not-alone state is hard-won and ephemeral
The Earth is inanimate matter, devoid of inherent meaning or consciousness
There is no limit to human ambition and in fact no higher law. No places and no actions are off-limits to humans, except if they infringe upon the rights of (sometimes only certain) other humans
Atheism is indeed the religious attitude that follows naturally from this state of mind. If you are not aware of this basic cultural programming (and Iām sure I have missed some of the facets of the attitude Iām trying to describe), it is very easy to mistake the modus operandi of the present culture for reality.
Individuals indeed need to be taught if they are to have religious views that are contrary to what they experience every day. Or they need to be enabled to have experiences that arenāt what our culture naturally leads you to experience regularly. But the crucial point is that it does not follow from that that the lived experience of people who are not taught in this way is somehow not moderated by a whole barrage of unspoken assumptions and contingent experiences that themselves rest on material conditions which have never before in human history existed and that will very likely not remain the way they are for much longer.
The same way that hierarchical societies give rise to hierarchical religions and societies that are dependent on what nature gives voluntarily (i.e. non-agricultural societies) will be animist, our present mechanical, ādisenchantedā society naturally gives rise to atheism. That does not mean that atheism is more true than other religious views, just more appropriate to the current state of things.
No. Thatās not true at all.
To paraphrase the great, late Charles Darwin, āThe more I learn about the universe the less I believe in the idea of beneveloent, loving universeā.
Atheism is lack of a god or serious religious rules and ideas. Thatās it. You donāt have to be consciously atheist. Athiesm is a default. Some people are so atheist itās like theyāre religious, but thatās the person. By definition, athiesm is nothing like religion and in practices, ideas, beliefs, etc, still nothing like it.
Religion and spirituality can be basically summarized by the humanization of non-human things. The idea that the universe is sentient and loves us, that thereās a giant sky man that has human emotions and has love towards creatures on earth, that crystals have energy and can be happy or sad, thatās all humans deserpayely trying to push human ideas and emotions onto the rest of the universe. Humans are scared to be alone with consciousness. Humans donāt enjoy thinking that we are animals that will die and be gone for eternity.
Without scientific evidence to show that in any religion or spirituality, itās just human imagination and fiction.
Youāre just stating arguments for being areligious that donāt have anything to do with what I wrote. If youāre going to respond to my post, why not engage with my actual arguments?
Here, Iāll help you:
- We still live in a hierarchical society, so imagining a world in which there is no big boss is still an insurrectionist act. - Itās wrong to claim that people are alone by default in our culture. Thanks to the historically unparalleled reach of modern bureaucracy and surveillance, we are less alone than ever. - [clever thoughts that I havenāt come up with]
Ugh, my mind is so underf-⦠underfed that Iām publicly arguing with myself on tumblr, what is wrong with me⦠I should take a walk or something.
Your post is trying to equate being atheist to being religious based on this idea that we are following what we are taught and thatās not true. At all. Atheists occurred way before it was ever an acceptable idea and it wasnāt a widespread thing people were taught.
Gnostic and agnostic just refers to how proveavle our ideas are. Gnostic just means you believe fully and can prove it. Agnostic means sure you believe in something but it could be wrong because we will never have proof. You can be a gnostic Buddhist or an agnostic catholic.
Religion is about faith. Believing in something without hardcore proof. Athiesm is about rejecting faith. Itās about not believing in gods that have never proven themselves and itās about not relying on confirmation bias based on ideas that humans imagined thousands of years ago.
Your argument about a hierarchal society giving rise to athiesm is just wrong when you consider athiesm started growing way before it was culturally accepted and thereās not any evidence that itās from being raised by atheists and shit. In fact most of the first atheists were people that were raised to be hardcore Christians and through science and studying facts they realized that there is no proof for spirituality.
And just because we donāt come up with the ideas alone doesnāt mean theyāre not accurate. Like that question doesnāt help or serve anything. Humans alone come up with a bunch of dumbass ideas. The fact that a bunch of scientists and historians say that, after searching for thousands of years, that thereās no proof for ANY religion or ANYTHING spiritual, thatās just trial and error thatās showing that our spiritual and religious ideas can not be backed up by anything tangible and anything that cares enough for us to see it.
I responded to your argument. Your argument is about comparing religion and athiesm and Iām stating that the way you reached that conclusion is based on bad logic and implies that itās all about education and culture when thatās not really true at all. Most areigious people were raised by religious people and many of them had to suffer a lot to accept their lack of religion because it was completely opposite to what they were raised to believe. If your argument about hierarchal socieites and education were true weād see most atheists, today and historically, being raised by atheists and thatās not true.
