and while im on a drafts-fueled rant can i just say i hate the idea that kakashi can do no wrong and that because he's so self-loathing and caring that he's incapable of being an asshole? like. he is an asshole. he is an asshole to his friends and he is capable of being an asshole to his students. sometimes in ways that don't matter and sometimes in ways that Do. he's also very sweet sometimes! those things can coexist.
him being catatonically depressed and traumatized does not change that and it is in fact a contributor to that. it's part of what makes him one of (to me) the most interesting characters in naruto. kakashi anbu arc (which i understand is not CANON but everyone loves it, myself included) literally shows him distancing himself from the people he loves because he's so caught up in his own head. and it's GOOD. yes he was hurting immensely but the idea that you can't call him an asshole because of that is insane. both things can be true at once.
yes he is deeply unhappy in konoha. konoha is ultimately awful for him because everything a shinobi is goes against what he has made his life's ideals. that kakashi has lived in konoha and has defended it for 20+ years despite it doing absolutely nothing for him (all but killing his father, having a sensei who despite all his fame and power just could not be bothered to take care of his students, sending him to anbu, etc etc etc), it is like, to me, the FUNDAMENTAL tragedy of his character and trying to engage with him while ignoring that is like... okay, you can do that, i guess, but i feel like it's missing the point entirely.
it really just comes down to like. yes he is absolutely another victim of the Awful Everything going on in the naruto world but that does not mean he can't be cruel and that he can't be an asshole, that he can't fail even though he cares. come the fuck on now
