The following was written as a collaboration between two staff members who in the past have had an unhealthy fake dating relationship but have since recovered their friendship and are excited to help others avoid making their same mistakes.
Sometimes maturity looks like saying âI could do that, but I wonât.â The inverse is also true: âI could not do that, but I will.â
Itâs true for brushing your teeth and protecting other peopleâs emotions.
This lesson in maturity is abundantly relevant to the world of dating and not dating and everything inbetween.
When guys and girls get together sometimes they date and thatâs a great thing. Dating is an important part of a healthy community and many dating relationships lead to an even more intimate relationship - marriage. Another thing that happens between guys and girls is what can be called âfake dating.â At itâs root, fake dating is an unlabeled romantic relationship. It is an attempt by two people to reap the benefits of emotional connection, and maybe even physical connection, without accepting the necessary responsibility of commitment.
How do you even spot a fake-lationship?
From the outside it looks like the couple is dating. They act like theyâre dating, they hang out like theyâre dating, and they count on each other like theyâre dating; but they refuse to define their relationship as dating. The couple continues their journey into the land of ambiguous behavior and vulnerable emotions. Fake dating is like playing with fire while wearing a blind-fold; potentially fun, but a terrible idea if you donât like getting burned.
Sometimes couples will admit to close friendship. Sometimes theyâll even call themselves best friends. But ask yourself the hard question- how great of a friendship do you have if you canât (or wonât) admit the truth?
Whatâs even the problem with fake dating?
Itâs a good question: why canât two adults just hang out?
It is totally fine for two adults to hang out. It is totally inappropriate for two adults to act like theyâre dating when they are not dating. Every time you spend time with someone, you are building a relationship with them. Make sure you are building relationships on a solid foundation. Creating and staying in relationships where there is an unmatched level of intimacy and commitment causes unhealthy interactions and connection.
The negative effects of fake dating are not obvious right away. In the moment, itâs a blast. In the moment it feels great to have a friend that wants to spend time with you, especially one of the opposite sex, but not worry about all that complicated relationship stuff.
The negative effect of fake dating is seen when the expectation that has been established through behavior is not met. When you spend time with someone regularly you are communicating âI want to spend time with you and you are important to me.â When you spend time with someone regularly you develop trust and learn to count on them. When you open yourself up to someone emotionally, you are giving them a piece of your heart. You should never give someone a piece of your heart unless they are committed enough to the relationship to be trusted with it.
How Can I Avoid Fake Dating?
You have heard it said âmitochondria is the powerhouse of the cellâ but I tell you âclarity is the powerhouse of a healthy relationship.â
Clarity is the strong foundation that healthy relationships are built on. The best way to avoid finding yourself in a fake dating relationship is to communicate clearly. For example, if you want to ask someone out: ask them out. Do not ask them to coffee. Do not take up baking so you can go borrow their Kitchen Aid all the time. Do not get your friend to invite you to their friendâs party so you can have another casual conversation so you can determine if they are definitely your future spouse.
In fake dating there is confusion. There are questions left unanswered. Do they like me? Do they want to date me? Am I not good enough for them? Would they date me if I was a Linguistics major?
Clarity removes confusion. Do they want to date me? Yes. Do they like me back? Yes, they said yes to the date.
Donât fall for the trap of fake dating. It seems easy in the short run, but it falls apart quickly.
If you find yourself fake dating, stop. You deserve better than fake dating. You deserve someone who will hold your heart with care. Talk to you your fake boy/girlfriend and say these words exactly: âHey, we need to talk about what kind of relationship we are building because I donât have clarity on that.â

How Can You Fix A Fake-lationship?
The best thing about a fake dating relationship- yes, there is room for redemption- is that it can be fixed. This fixing might not be easy and it will definitely take a dose of humility, but it can happen. Weâre living proof.
Since youâve had the hard conversation of figuring out what is going on, you then get to move forward to restoration.
Most of the time that means you have to ask yourself âWhat situations led me to being in this mess to begin with?â Once you answer that question, you can figure out what boundaries you need to establish with this person and within yourself.
Boundaries are going to look different for everyone. What works for some people, wonât work for you, and vice versa. Thatâs okay, because we are different and respond differently in various situations. But the most important thing with boundaries is that you have them, you communicate them, and you guard them (even when itâs hard.) You do that so you never find yourself in a position where you are continually living without clarity within your relationships.
Clear boundaries are absolutely a solution and will work well for many people. Some people, however, need to let go completely of the relationship that left them confused and hurt. It is not a less than option, if itâs the healthiest choice for you to make, then make it. Forgive them and move forward, trusting God for the good things He has promised.
What does a healthy relationship look like?
Letâs use the analogy of a table for this one. Look at the importance of the strength of a table when you put an entire Easter lunch on it. You want that table to hold the weight being placed atop it.
Think about the first time you decide to tell the person youâre dating something very personal about yourself. You wouldnât do that on a first date. You would wait until you know you trust that person and feel comfortable with them knowing this thing about you. The foundation of your relationship should be strong enough to hold the information shared. This strong foundation will not happen overnight. Strengthening of your relationship will come with time. Itâs a process that is worthy of your patience. Â
Plain and simple, your level of intimacy should match your level of commitment. No one is the exception to that rule.
