verlaine is capable of a bloodless assassination meaning that the absolute slaughter at old world was purposefully horrific.
while i’m not sure if the deaths of the royal guards were quick or not, i’d say that they were allowed a somewhat peaceful death, maybe prompted by professional detachment since the only reason for their deaths was because they were between verlaine and the queen, since their bodies looked like they were sleeping. their deaths weren’t a crime of passion, they were allowed to die with dignity. their families wouldn’t have had any trouble burying their loved ones because there was no blood.
the flags on the other hand were massacred. they werent granted a quick demise, they fought while watching the other members of the flags receive injury after injury until they fell one by one. if any of the flags had family, they wouldn’t have been able to say goodbye to their loved one face to face (especially lippmann’s family seeing as he sorta lost his head.) their agonising and brutal deaths were practically a punishment for being the reason, in verlaine’s mind, why chuuya was staying with the port mafia.
i’d argue that the flags were killed in the awful way that they were because they granted chuuya something that verlaine couldn’t have himself - a place of belonging and a sense of being human. (this is one of the reasons why i think why can’t i be you? by the cure is a good song for their dynamic.)
i feel like the bloodbath at old world could’ve been left as a spectacle for chuuya to see, an exhibition of what would happen over and over to every human that cared for chuuya. i see this as verlaine trying to destroy every connection that chuuya has, trying to force him down the path that verlaine wants for him
