The aftermath of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo's candlelight vigil & protest from the night before in Houston, Texas. Over 1000 people attended it. These photos were taken on July 9th 2026

Now normally I don't make posts like these, but Lorenzo Salgado Araujo's family has a Go Fund Me page. They could really use the extra help right now. The funds will go directly to his wife and their three sons to help with funeral and burial costs, legal expenses, everyday living costs, and the wife’s needs. Lorenzo was the sole provider for her. So she needs the extra support. For those who may not know, Lorenzo Salago Araujo was a 52 year old man from Houston, Texas that got shot and killed by ICE on July 7th. He worked in construction and built houses for a living. He was on his way to work to pick up his fellow employees, including his brother. ICE was masked up and drove in unmarked vehicles as they were terrorizing Lorenzo. Once they obtained Lorenzo, that was when an ICE agent opened fire and took his life. According to ICE, Lorenzo was ramming his car into an ICE vehicle and the ICE agent killed him out of self defense. They even went as far as to say he was doing a “targeted enforcement operation.” ICE refuses to release any footage on exactly what happened to him. His son had to find out about his murder through social media because DHS, HPD and the hospital Lorenzo was at wasn't giving him any answers as to whether or not his father was ok. Right now the family, representatives Sylvia Garcia and Al Green are demanding answers and want an independent investigation. We the community here in Houston have those same demands and for justice to be served. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Whatever you guys are able to donate will mean a lot to Lorenzo's family.

ALGERIA. Algiers. July 5th 1962. Independance Day. When the news of overhelming success of ‘Yes’ votes for Independence was learned, youngsters rushed from the suburbs with Algerian flags while shouting slogans for Unity and Freedom.
-- Ted Chiang, from "Why A.I. Isn't Going to Make Art"
I'm so glad they got Ted Chiang -- a wonderful writer of science fiction and thinker about technology, in my opinion -- to write this essay. My favorite line was this:
Generative A.I. appeals to people who think they can express themselves in a medium without actually working in that medium.
