Every time I go out to visit the midwest or mountain west I'm baffled as to how anyone lives in these gigantic flat plains or giant bowl valleys between mountains with no trees to speak of. It's nature's panopticon. You can go inside I guess but that roof can't hide you from God like the woods can. It's gorgeous of course but I'm going back to Mirkwood where I can think my wicked little thoughts in peace, thank you very much.

i feel the same except the complete opposite. the mountains are nice to visit but how does anyone live there? you don’t know what’s hiding in there. peace is endless flat plains, nothing but you and the angel you’re struggling with.

Look at this reference! Aren’t the shadows and light lovely? Time to draw baby Sammy!

I mostly used these little chunks of hard pastel. But I had to use a little bit of pastel pencil in the end too, just to define his shadowed eye, because the paper was getting a bit worn and fuzzy.

I started by roughing in the big juicy shadow shapes:

Then put in some of the light:

Then realised my rusty brown wasn't going to cut it, so I used a darker brown for definition:

Then I added more detail:

Then improved his jawline and added more hair:

Then realised there was something wrong with his shadowy eye and proceeded to make it worse:

Then refined it with the pencils:

The finished Sammy! I hope you like him. Can you tell I've finally recovered from the latest chemo cycle? The joy is back...

In multiple communities all over the USA and Canada, every pediatric hospital bed is full, mostly with babies and toddlers who have severe respiratory infections. It seems to be a combination of flu, RSV and COVID, sometimes more than one at a time in the same child.

We can sort out why this happened later. Right now, there’s an emergency that should be front page news, and isn’t, and the best way to stop it is to reduce the circulation of all respiratory viruses in our communities by masking everyone who can mask, before babies start dying because there isn’t enough care to go around.

Get your current flu shot and bivalent COVID booster if you haven’t already, but also please mask now.

The Worst Pediatric-Care Crisis in Decades

An early, massive wave of RSV, flu, and other viral infections is slamming kids and overcrowding emergency departments.

COVID somehow convinced waaaaay too many adults that children are more resistant to disease than adults.

They are NOT.

While there are a handful of diseases that are easier for kids to endure without long-term consequences than adults, mostly, diseases that make adults feel tired and fevered and stuffy-headed can be deadly for kids.

And once the mask mandates faded (because, apparently, we’re all too tired of COVID to keep protecting our communities from it), everyone seems to have forgotten that for most illnesses, kids catch them first and feel them worst.

Googling for [children respiratory crisis] on the News tab gets a terrifying array of articles. “[Location] hospitals are swamped.”

…Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Stay a few steps away from other people in public, when and where you can.
