The problem with S2 Vanya is not that she became a lesbian. It wouldn’t even matter if Sissy is a Shaun, or a Charisse, or a Carl. Vanya’s plot took a complete detour, like we’re seeing a separate universe from the main plot. The scene where she’s in her subconscious meant nothing because it wasn’t even triggered with interactions with her siblings. It happened because she was shocked for being a suspected Russian spy. Wildt. And how does Sissy even add up to that, like, what did she do to help Vanya at all if Vanya doesn’t even know who she is?

You know what bothers me the most? The passive forgiveness that this bullshit plot has forced on Vanya.

The Vanya they spent time on in S1, building her story so we could understand (not condone, understand) why the betrayal of her siblings is the final straw, why that complete loss of trust is what drives her right into fear and rage; that Vanya? She's dead. In her place there is not-Vanya who the critics apparently loves because she's no longer horribly depressed and filled with anger. The thing is, reviewers don't pay attention to silly things like development and consistency, not when they have 4 other shows and movies to watch and judge superficially.

This not-Vanya is passive but happier and confident because fictional amnesia helps with self-esteem issues (and also they really needed to retcon her to be likeable to the fandom).

Not-Vanya has no choice when it comes to forgive Luther for his actions because she doesn't remember. Luther was ready to shoot her in that barn but apparently changes his mind because there is no traumatized, angry sister in front of him, just the innocent and oh so nice shell they recreated.

Same thing happen with Diego. Diego forgives her because that woman sitting in front of him is not his sis. And she says "sorry I guess?" for something that she has no knowledge of.

Not-Vanya who after discovering from Luther and Diego how much effort Reginald put in order to crush her soul says,"Oh now I definitely want to meet him" GIRL WHAT?

She passively forgives them because Blackman and the writers were too lazy and cowardly to write her a good storyline, because it was better to see them hugging and be soft without the effort of getting there. I'll be forever mad about this and I'll forever love the incredibly complex character that Vanya truly is and not this retcon-Ellen Page-playing-herself version.

I don't think I even need to write anything when this articulated every bit of what I felt. Season 2 crossed the past of no return, how will Season 3 even save it?

I binged watched Umbrella Academy S2 and it was not good

I have just finished watching Umbrella Academy S2 and I was very disappointed. Not just about FiveYa but for the whole season as well, the plot, the characters, everything. They tried really hard to write off FiveYa and it almost felt like everything was a cheap spin off of Season 1. And I had to sit through it for almost ten hours. Also, I think those little FiveYa moments were just a big fuck you to us FiveYa stans. (But I cherished them a little ‘cause you gotta make do with what you have) Now, I’m feeling pessimistic about S3. I haven’t read any meta/reviews/analyses so I’m new to the discussion. I’m still processing everything but I plan to write a review/analysis. So for now, I need to step away from the keyboard as anything I’ll say will definitely just be incoherent rants. Anyone having the same thoughts or no?

Can I just say that Nova The Experience’s “Alfresco Disco” sounds like a FIveYa anthem.

Okay before things start to go way out of hand, let me make things clear with what I said here.

I *apologize* for not just being direct that Hazel x Agnes mirroring FIveYa is Five being the older one and not Vanya. (I thought it woud be apparent as Five often takes time to point this out.)

But then, when accusing of the FiveYa as being pro-pedophilia, it’s apparent where the pitchforks are pointing at: that Vanya is the adult one in the relationship, while Five is the child, ergo it’s pEdoPhiLia.

And I get the concern, but such accusation is not only wrong but also unfounded.

Let’s say that Vanya is the older one.

According to Britannica:

Pedophilia is a psychosexual disorder, generally affecting adults, characterized by sexual interest in prepubescent children or attempts to engage in sexual acts with prepubescent children.

Now let me ask you, was Vanya at any point in the narrative shown to have a pattern of finding young boys sexually attractive particularly those who haven't hit puberty yet? If we’re to not look for patterns as there isn’t any, say let’s just focus with Five on this one, then if she were attracted to FIve, was it portrayed that she sees him sexually because of his thirteen-year-old body?

Yes, it's definitely a deliberate choice to pair up Hazel with a much older Agnes. Hazel would be around 30s to 40s, while Agnes is at late 50s to 60s. 

The writers could have chosen a younger actress to play as Agnes, make her more innocent and optimistic. But no, we have a 60-years-old Agnes smooching with Hazel, and it ain’t disgusting at all.

(Edit: That is not to say that I intend to see 30-year-old Vanya and FIve in a thirteen-year-old body smooching up, read on.)

Despite the huge gap, you don’t see the balance tipped over to Agnes for being old, nor is it tipped to Hazel because he is not ordinary like her.

The age gap has to be glaring in order to frame a similar pairing. I wonder what that pairing is?

(note that I’ve edited the last sentence from “foreshadow” to “mirror” to “frame.” I realize that frame is the actual word I’m looking for. Foreshadowing is often used as a warning to predict future events, though it can be used to mean something positive. It’s just that it is shown to us audience and not to the character themselves, like no character has to point that out. Mirror felt like it already has drawn a lot of parallels to it when fiveya has yet to initiate an official relationship. Frame indicates that it’s more of a potential, and a possibility instead of it being final considering that the showrunners could scratch it if they wish.)
