Hello everyone, guess who's back posting on Tumblr!!! I've been really busy with real-life stuff, but I come bearing good news. I passed the geiko exam and will start preparing for my erikae!!!! In Miyajimacho, once a maiko passes her exam, she can wear three hairstyles before wearing the yakko shimada and sakkou hairstyles. So my first pre-Sakkou hairstyle is the Oshun hairstyle.
At this year's Fuji hanamikai, senior maiko Umeyuu danced Rokudan Kuzushi, and our newcomer maiko Fumikiyo danced Gion Kouta. It was her first time performing at Hanamikai, since she debuted in December. Would you like to try your hand at becoming a maiko too?
Miyajimacho's most senior maiko, Umeyuu, gave a heartfelt performance of Rokudan kuzushi at this year's Fuji hanamikai! Doesn't she look wonderful among the wisteria branches?
Marukawa odori 2026:
Our maiko performed a visually stunning piece 'Ehikasa', that involved dancing on stage with parasols. For the second act, geiko Ayachiyo participated by dancing a complex masculine role in 'Suisen Tanzen'. Lastly, all the geiko and maiko performed the grand finale 'Hanakurabe'!
At the end of February, we held our annual Baikasai - plum blossom viewing and tea ceremony event. Geiko Ayachiyo and maiko Fumikiyo performed the obon style tea ceremony, while maiko Umeyuu and Kimiaki showed off their skills at ryurei style tea ceremony.
Setsubun is a yearly event meant to usher in good fortune and ward off the demons: geiko and maiko do so by dressing in obake costumes or unusual hairstyles and performing at the shrine.
Maiko Kimiaki and Kimiharu performed for us, then participated in traditional mamemaki with geiko Umeyakko dressed in an Edo-period costume, geiko Ayachiyo dressed as a maiko, maiko Umeyuu and Fumikiyo!
Shigyoshiki 2026: Sumiya family - geiko Umeyuki, Umeyakko and maiko Umeyuu, Kimiaki and Kimiharu made their rounds for the New year opening ceremony
September memory: the twin maiko Kimiaki and Kimiharu posing
Fumikiyo's misedashi: photo report! Geiko and maiko from other okiya came to congratulate her and help with the dressing process, after which Fumikiyo took a commemorative photo in the genkan and went to introduce herself to ochaya in the district. During the day, she had a binding ceremony with her geiko-older sister and posed for photos!
The day of Fumikiyo's misedashi is finally here! On December 12th, she made her first steps as a Miyajimacho maiko. Welcome, maiko Fumikiyo of Hanai!
A lot has been happening in Miyajimacho in the recent days.
Our shikomi has passed her exam and is making her minarai debut today - this also means the date for her misedashi, or official debut, is set! Fumikiyo, imouto of Ayatsuki, will have her debut on December 12th!
The uchi iwai - a paper wrapping for tenugui gifts given to patrons and businesses - features her misedashi date as well as information about her name, okiya and older sister, with her first hanameishi attached. After a year of hard work and learning, she will make her first steps as a maiko. Please support her in her future career!
At the end of summer, we held our Yukatakai - a private event showing off everyone's progress in the arts!
Natori geiko Umeyakko performed the dance 'Uchimizu', geiko Ayachiyo performed 'Fude no kasa', and maiko Kimiaki, Kimiharu and shikomi Eiko performed 'Gion kouta', accompanied by other geiko and maiko as musicians.
August 1st marks Hassaku; traditionally the day when rice begins to ripen and celebrations are held. In the hanamachi, geiko and maiko dress in their finest summer silk and offer their respect and gratitude for those they are working with. Geiko Ayachiyo and Ayatsuki went around with shikomi Eiko, and maiko Umeyuu visited the ochaya with her older sisters.
It's been a while since the last update!
In July, we held our Gion Matsuri event, part of the major festival where geiko and maiko of Miyajimacho participated, first appearing in one of the matsuri floats, then performing for the audience. Maiko Umeyuu and Kimitomo performed 'Natsu wa hotaru', and geiko Umeyakko and Ayachiyo performed the dance 'Yuugure'!
May in Miyajimacho: we held a Fuji hanamikai - a wisteria blossom viewing party with maiko performances. Umeyuu and Terutsuyo performed the dances Gion Kouta and Rokudan Kuzushi, surrounded by flowering branches of wisteria!
Marukawa Odori grand finale - until next year!
