Random Access Memories
I've been hearing a lot of mixed things in regards to Daft Punk's latest album release, Random Access Memories. I feel as though this album is something some people might be confused with.
I listen to music a lot. While I'm at work, in my car, while I exercise, in my apartment, blah, blah, blah... Most of us do. I had no real expectations for this album, but I was excited for its release. I first listened to the album at work. I have to keep the volume down, I'm usually pretty distracted with other matters, and I get a lot of interruptions on a daily basis. I can tell you that I have listened to other music for the first time while at work. What tends to happen is, I go home and listen to what I thought I was enjoying only to come to the conclusion that I didn't really like it. After that, it never gets played again. So, after listening to the first five minutes of Daft Punk's new release (even with all the distractions), I knew I would enjoy it. The multitude of instruments, beats, and synths were unexpected. I distinctly remember cracking a smile.
I decided to run it on a loop while I was at work in an attempt to cover as much musical ground as I could with the distraction of work still lingering. I continued to play the album on my commute. When I arrived home, I put it back on. I just couldn't hear enough of it. I felt as though a film was playing in my head to the tune of disco-funk bass lines and auto-tuned vocals. A dramatic, intergalactic love story filled with robots and funk. I feel as though the album as a whole is something of a story being told. It changed everything by becoming a complete experience as opposed to just music.
There is nothing that this album doesn't hit. Synthesized beats, jazzy riffs, broadway vocals, soul train tracks, and even interview narratives. I was blown away.
Chill.
