I once tried sincerely to tell someone that I was concerned for her mental health, because of certain patterns of behaviour. She took it as an attack on her (coincidentally horrible) political position.

I can't say for certain that people deliberately conflating the two was a factor. But it is at least a possibility.

Well, I don’t think I have actually written a post like that yet and I also think you may overestimate how many literal kids there are on tumblr - but since you’re handing out awards, here’s some gentle, non-judgemental info on masturbation like a good dad would offer if asked (since teens and young people deserve honest answers to make empowered choices):

Masturbation is a very common activity. It’s generally safe and healthy and it even comes with some benefits:

it’s only you, meaning there’s no risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases!

it’s a safe way to explore your own likes and dislikes and to try out fantasies you may have, without the emotional entanglement of involving another person (yet or at all).

it can’t break your heart. Sex with another person requires a lot of trust and communication and you shouldn’t rush into that just to try it out.

it can be a fun way to get to know your own body, and knowing your own body is important to take care of your health! Knowing what’s going on down there is a good thing.

It’ll not ruin sex with a (future) partner. Many actually experience the opposite: getting to know your body and learning about your preferences solo actually makes sex with a partner more enjoyable and relaxed.

It may bring physical health benefits: it’s like a mini workout after all, plus orgasms are known to be healthy for you!

It can be a stress-relief and even helps some people sleep better.

It can actually help you live according to your values. For example, if you’re single and do not wish to have sex outside of longterm relationships, masturbation can help satisfy your needs without sacrificing your beliefs for a one night stand.

It allows you full flexibility without having to explain anything. You don’t like orgasms? You can just stop before you reach that point. You like to be perfectly quiet? Nobody expects you to moan if it’s only you.

It also doesn’t really have any side effects or negative consequences in general. Ideas such as „masturbation causes mental illness“ or even „masturbation leads to blindness“ are outdated medical myths. There’s no scientific evidence for that at all and it comes from times with limited knowledge on sexual health plus very strict beliefs around „sexual purity“. Modern medicine considers masturbation a healthy activity most people do.

Things you should keep in mind are just:

You should wash your hands before. While you can’t give yourself STDs (unless you touched someone else’s genitalia or fluids right before), you may have other germs or irritants on your hands that you don’t want down there. Also wash your hands after, that’s just basic hygiene and respect for the next person you shake hands with.

Masturbation doesn’t always require putting something inside of you. But if you do want to, please only use products specifically designed for that (or your fingers). Things that weren’t made for that purpose might hurt or injure you, or they could even get stuck or break off inside of you.

If you don’t enjoy masturbation, you don’t need to do it. While it’s a great activity for many, it’s still just an activity. Just like hiking or playing cards or singing: if you don’t enjoy it, you’re not missing out on anything by not doing it.

Lastly, I also want to address this common question:

Masturbation doesn’t always involve pornography. Many use their own imagination or even just enjoy the touch without any (inner) movie playing. You do not need to use porn to masturbate.

But if (and only if) porn is something you’re curious about and maybe something you’re worried about (is it unethical or weird etc), please know:

it’s a very common thing to be curious about and it’s also something many people regularly consume.

Know that, just as with online content of other genres, shocking or extreme content sometimes gets the most clicks. This doesn’t mean it’s representative of what most people enjoy or want in real life.

Sex in porn is staged. It’s meant to look good, not be realistic. Be aware that it’s not a good source for sexual education.

The problems with the porn industry are mainly problems with the industry (such as unsafe working conditions, unfair wages etc.). The ethical problem isn’t the sex itself.

You can avoid some of the industry problems by seeking out ethically produced or fairtrade porn. This usually means: all workers were fairly paid, there were precautions taken that all workers are of legal age and are willingly participating, workers may get more say in which scenes they want to do etc. Those websites also often focus more on female or queer pleasure than mainstream sites do. You may need to do some research there but it’s worth it

Ah, I suppose I'm being sort of opaque about it. Usually I try to keep where I live on the down low, but for the sake of this I will say it's Iowa.

So for the past ten years or so in Iowa there's been this song and dance ever since the governor put his foot down and told the school districts that they were not allowed to have the start of school until after the end of the state fair. Like most school districts, they had been moving the start of school up by a week every year or two for a long time, and it had, for a long time, started during and even sometimes before the state fair.

Now Iowa is obviously made up mostly of farming communities, and the state fair is The annual event, especially for kids on small, family run farms, who are learning how to run the farm, and things like livestock handling and the like. These things are not taught in school. There are some college courses you can take about it, but the vast majority of the next generation to own small farms are learning how to run them on farms belonging to their parents or friends. And for these kids, the state fair is like graduation. It's essential for them to be there, to show their proficiency in different fields, make connections with their peers and in the various industries they will need to work with, and to take advantage of workshops and resources that are only available once a year during the state fair. (Also, the state fair is just a massive part of the culture here and kids should be allowed to attend and be a part of it, even if they don't plan on going into farming.)

With school starting during or before the state fair, this was obviously a problem. Kids were forced to choose between the first weeks of school and the state fair. If they chose school, they lost out on essential education and name-taking that would pave the road for them further down the line if they chose to go into farming. If they picked the state fair, it put their general education at risk, and there's not a lot of forgiveness going around for kids who miss the first week of school.

The governor told the school districts that they weren't allowed to force kids to choose anymore. The state fair has been at the same time every year for a hundred years, that's their cutoff point for how early school can start. This means school can start on the last week of August, which is more than reasonable IMO. (Edit: I went back and googled it and the exact cutoff date is the 23rd of August. This was signed into law last year -- I'm not sure if there was a specific date prior to that or if the actual law is new.)

This worked for a couple of years, and then the school district tried to move the first week of school up again and were firmly told no. And ever since that's happened every few years.

Now I believe this is happening in more places than just Iowa, but it was called out and stopped in Iowa because of the strong cultural weight of farming here. It goes unnoticed in most other places because it's just not as important culturally.

And it's important because pushing school back to before these essential farming events is pushing future generations out of small farming. I.E. when the people who currently own small farms die or become too old to run the farm anymore, they won't be able to pass it on to younger relatives or friends, because those people won't have the skillset to actually operate the farm. They'll end up having to sell their land to -- mostly Google and Facebook, who loooooove to buy up farmland around here to build datacenters, but also to larger corporate farms, who are going to do everything more shittily and less ethically.

Now I don't genuinely think this is some grand conspiracy on the part of the school districts. There might be some lobbying from Google and Facebook, IDK. It's more just an issue of the school district either not knowing or not caring about the consequences of their actions.

Also students in Japan, where the academic calendar doesn't have breaks of more than six consecutive weeks? Those students have to sit through significantly less time at the start of the school year dedicated to reviewing material from the previous school year. Which would mean more class time available for new material even if the same number of days per year were spent in school, and Japan mandates at least 210 school days per calendar year, versus 180 in the US.

I don't know offhand how that intersects with rohirric-hunter's point. My money's on the would-be future small farmers of Japan getting fucked over coming and/or going.

I'm shocked that things like animal husbandry aren't available in school. For reference, I'm English (I specify because I don't know how applicable this is elsewhere in the UK.)

I grew up in an industrial town, so that was the focus of schools there. But Compass Rose grew up in a much more rural region and her school had a freaking farm. Animal husbandry etc.

Do schools in the US not tailor the curriculum at all?

I love programming. The process, the act, is such a fucking glorious thing. Maddeningly frustrating a lot of the time, but so wonderful.

And I revel in the differences between languages. There are languages that are so elegant, sleek, effective; they're beautiful. And others that are clunky, bloated and plain bad but still worth using.

The idea of these things being lost breaks my heart.

The thought that people might stop developing languages, because who needs to when humans aren't even writing the code...

It's unbearable and it makes me wish I'd never become a coder in the first place. Then I wouldn't know what might be lost.

There is something that no nationalist is willing to hear, and even a lot of other people are resistant to. I've especially observed this in Americans, but it is also rife in a subset of my countrypersons. It is the following sentiment.

When I learn that somebody joined the military, my respect for them plummets.

The reason for this is simple, and I think it is worth pondering for anyone whose kneejerk reaction was to take umbrage.

Whatever incentives were offered, whatever lies were told to the prospective recruit, whatever opportunities, no matter the carrot, to accept is to agree a price. A price above which one is willing to kill fellow human beings of whom one knows nothing, good or ill. A price for murder.

Some protest, the recruiter said the recruit would get a non combat role! They never expected to shoot anyone! But that's bullshit. It's bullshit because if you ask any child what the military is for they'll be able to tell you; it's for killing people.

And that is evil.
