I want to talk about Borrasca part 5 cause yes, overall it's not needed and kinda ruins the vibe of the original story, but I want to make an argument that with TWO changes it could have been really good. I mainly bring this up because I personally love the final scene so much and I think you can have the hope that comes with it while also not losing the mood of the story as a whole. Spoilers for Borrasca part five obviously, and trigger warning because it's,,, Borrasca (I will be mentioning human trafficking)
Sam's dad should not be an alpha male, duh. Make him pathetic and sad. He hates himself and is disgusted with what he's done and what he continues to do, but doesn't have the fucking spine to actually change anything. He's already the worst, make him somehow more awful. A self pitying sad excuse of a human being, who's too much of a coward to actually take accountability for this sick shit he's done and runs. And then he tries to pass down his sins to Sam, because that's the only way he can think of alleviating his guilt, is to spread it to someone else. This ALSO would parallel nicely with Sam, who's also a loser but he goes cold turkey for Kimber, cause he actually cares about her, unlike his dad who says he cares, but he really doesn't.
Prescott gets away at the end and takes back control of the whole operation, but does leave them be since they helped. Now I don't mind the idea that Sam and Kimber do consider trying to shut down the whole thing, hell, have them try, because I get it. It's vile and fucked, and last time they were there they were just kids, now they're grown up. them wanting to take it down makes sense. But they're still too small to do anything. Kimber is just a woman and Sam is an ex junkie. Yeah yeah, there's Seth, but his entire purpose in the story is for them to take the whole thing down, otherwise he really isn't necessary. I don't think he should exist. Their intentions are good, but have Prescott be the personification of human trafficking. He's been in this business too long, he's too massive, has too many connections and too much money. It doesn't matter that they're older now, they still don't have the resources to overthrow an entire operation like this. They probably never will.
NOW, with that, we can go back to that final scene, with Sam at the window watching the snow, Kimber with Kyle, and it ending with Kyle saying her name. They're all together again. They're traumatized beyond belief, and the thing that caused all that trauma is still out there, but by some miracle they all survived. In this room, there's hope for them. Maybe they can figure out how to live again, despite it all. There's the hope that maybe they can be happy again. And that's my favorite kind of ending, a bittersweet one. They won the battle, but they will not win the war, kind of vibe. There's a personal hope for each of them, and maybe that can carry them through the rest of their lives.
