I recently watched the HTTYD remake, and wanted to post something dragons related for the occasion. I went through my old folders and found this repaint of Astrid, that I totally forgot to upload when I painted it! So I thought, when is a better time to post this than now? Hope you like it! :)

Me too. Big ol’ fuckin whoops during a very scary time for my mother with the kid (my older sister by like a year and four months) she’d recently had lol. To say she was pissed to be pregnant again is an understatement lol.

I want to talk about one of the little cutscenes in Dragonflight. I want to talk about Alexstrasza and what she said to Wrathion when he was asking for assistance with reclaiming the Obsidian Citadel.

“I would have expected you to care more for the protection of helpless eggs, Wrathion.”

Going to preface this with I don’t think she was in the wrong for choosing to prioritize the eggs. She’s right; she knows Raszageth (Razsageth?? I hate spelling her name) better than Wrathion. I’ll trust her judgement there. And it’s not like she abandoned him completely. She sends the player to help him. (Do I think that was enough? No. But it’s better than nothing I guess)

But pulling THAT line out against Wrathion? That was FOUL.

To start with, the black flight has so little left at this point. Wrathion still believes that he and Ebyssian are all that remains. He is clawing for scraps here, trying to make something out of his broken flight. As he said, the Obsidian Citadel is the black flight’s legacy. Legacies are all that the black flight has at this point — this cutscene is before Sabellian arrives with other black dragons and with eggs. Alexstrasza tried to appeal to a future that Wrathion did not think his flight had. He must have felt that he was being asked to let go of an important piece of his flight in favor of further securing the other flights despite them already appearing to be secured. In his eyes, Alexstrasza was simply brushing him off.

And let’s not forget about the circumstances of Wrathion’s creation. Alexstrasza’s line must have felt like a double insult because where was that concern for helpless eggs when Rheastrasza was forcing Nyxondra to lay eggs that were subsequently being experimented on? Alexstrasza is trying to appeal to him with eggs when it was a member of her very own flight that was frankensteining together dead whelps and unhatched eggs (while we have confirmation that whelps are AWARE and CONSCIOUS of the outside world while still in their eggs) to create the amalgamation that is Wrathion.

Of course he was upset. Of course he decided to attempt to reclaim the Obsidian Citadel on his own. He thought he might be finding his place among other dragonkind only for Alexstrasza to (unintentionally, I should hope) remind him how outcast he is.

So Sabellion just… lets the obsidian whelps fly around in the front lawn that is currently an active warzone instead of sending them to the red dragonflight area like a good parent. Then his solution to them getting in danger is just “eh have the champion take out a few enemies they’ll be fine” ?!

I’m very much concerned and panicking over this! Like buddy, we get it you brought a lot of eggs with you, but that doesn’t mean the children are disposable! I’m seriously considering taking custody of all of them bc dude, whyy?

...I mean, yeah, these sorts of opposite-of-NFTs Open Source Art things are something I dedicate a lot of brainspace to, and I actually have some suggestions!

Firstly, if you wanna do that, you’d probably want to use one of the organization Creative Commons’ licenses, to make the “anyone can use/save/alter it” official and legally binding, presumably one of their looser ones like CC-BY or CC0.

Secondly, honestly, this is a rad idea, something like Open Game Art’s various sprites but more as an art project than an assets thing, and i have an idea on how you could expand it further.

Basically: Fanpro but for Pixel Art. Which, for those who don’t know, Fanpro is basically this pool of character designs people contributed to for a while, released totally and utterly under a CC0 license, for anyone to use how they see fit! Basically the exact opposite of NFTs!

It ha a successor in ComPro, but that kinda sputtered out, but one based around a specific theme like pixel art might be perfect! If only as an F-you to NFTs!

...But yeah, that’s my two cents on that good idea.

Boosting this! The opposite of NFTs has existed for a long time, it's called open source and creative commons. And to add something, Kenney has recently released this little app called Creature Mixer to create little animated pixel art sprites: https://kenney.itch.io/creature-mixer It's free and it's terms of use forbid any use with any kind of NFTs for the sprites created with it.

Licence: You can copy, modify and distribute this work, even for commercial projects, strictly excluding those relating to or containing non-fungible tokens (so-called "NFT") or blockchain (related) projects.

I’ve included a blown up 80 by 80 pixel version simply because I know from experience that Tumblr messes up small pixel art, but I’ve included a version in the original 16 by 16 resolution. While Sprytile is my pixel art software of choice, any image editor should do as long as long as it allows for turning off anti-aliasing, the bane of anyone who’s worked with pixels.

anyway, that’s enough pomp and circumstance for my silly little goblin powered by spite, although I do think it turned out pretty cute
