what's also super interesting to me is how there has been no clear verbal definition of the kennedy-pallister family structure. lori is niall's mother and maura is ruben's mother, yes, but lori and maura don't define their relationship, ostensibly as a protective measure, and maura and niall/lori and ruben express little semblance of a step parent/child dynamic (any attempts from maura to do so with niall are uncomfortable on both ends). the only stated construction of their family as a whole family and not two sets of mothers and sons sutured together by an unspoken sexual attachment (all sexuality in this series is unspoken or immediately suppressed) is niall and ruben's choice to label themselves as brothers. the act of which both allows and rejects their codependent sexual dynamic.
