disclaimer within esquire magazine’s summer of tennis edition that proves they deliberately excluded alexander zverev from the publication
Editor's note: Finishing the year as world No.2, Alexander Zverev is arguably better placed than anyone to claim tennis' top spot. However, due to the well-documented allegations of domestic violence against him, we decided not to include Zverev in this editorial. If you or someone you know has experienced domestic, family or sexual violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732, text 0458 737 732 or visit 1800RESPECT.org.au for online chat and video-call services.
like what is there even to say? an abuser who shouldn’t be allowed to play won and now he’s going to be turned into some story about resilience and perseverance. the world cup is starting soon and i genuinely don’t have enough fingers to count how many abusers and assaulters will be out there playing and being celebrated.
women’s suffering means nothing. i’m just so fucking tired of it. i feel angry, helpless and exhausted watching the same thing happen over and over again
I know i should temper my expectations but she makes it so hard

after reading that new ferrero interview it becomes clear why this was never going to work long term. the bitterness, the need to give his version of events publicly, the past tense “was family” — it all paints a picture of someone who was always too emotionally invested to ever handle the ending well. and ironically, that same emotional investment is probably what made the partnership so successful in the first place.
because ferrero never really coached carlos in the detached way many top coaches do. he seems to have approached the relationship much more like raising someone he felt personally responsible for. and when you start working with a player at 15, shaping not just the tennis but also the habits, discipline, routines, mentality and relationship to fame and success, the dynamic inevitably becomes parental to some degree. you can hear it in the language he uses. “family.” “i raise my children like this.” that is not how someone talks about a purely professional arrangement.
and honestly, he is probably right that this structure was a huge reason carlos developed the way he did. ferrero gave him discipline very young, kept him grounded, demanded high standards and created an environment where talent never turned into entitlement. players do not become multi-slam champions that young without that kind of foundation underneath them.
but the complicated part is that the same dynamic that helps create greatness in a teenager can start feeling restrictive once that teenager becomes an adult. at some point, young players stop wanting guidance to define every decision and start wanting independence over their own life. the yacht comment could sound funny on the surface, but underneath it there is a real disagreement about freedom, adulthood and control. ferrero more or less admits that himself when he wonders whether maybe he said “no” too often.
and then in the end there is carlos’s father. while all of this was playing out publicly, he never said a single word. he sat in silence while spanish media blamed him for destroying one of the greatest coaching partnerships in tennis history, and he just let them. nothing. just silence. because for him none of that mattered as much as protecting his son. that is a parent who loves his son so much that he sacrificed his own reputation, and took the blame with a quiet dignity that says more about his character than any interview ever could.
Sorry for bringing up a topic people on here like to avoid but I’m also feeling very bitter that after the ukrainian madroma winners, Marta talking about the bombings in her hometown and Oliynykovas bravery the biggest clay tournament was now won by a Russian that got awarded the honour medal by Putin

zeballos asked carlos for advice after a five grand slam final loosing streak , carlos told him to go out there to win it, but when you get back to the hotel, whether you’ve won or lost, make sure you have the peace of mind of knowing you gave everything your body had.
zeballos says he took those words and the way carlos said them to him to heart that he carries them with him every time he plays. he and granollers have won three slams since
i miss him
