a/n: I've been a stranger things fan for years and the ending of the series has hit me pretty hard. So here's my own little epilogue that I couldnāt stop thinking about the other night after watching the series finale. I did listen to Letter Home by Childish Gambino when writing this- hence the title x
warnings: ST season 5 finale spoilers, (sort of idk) angst and mentions of infertility, mentions of death and loss, fluff, fluff, fluff and more fluff
The office the couple sits in smells faintly of old paper and dust. A large wooden desk sits in front of them with an empty chair opposite, its surface worn smooth with time. The now scratched gloss of the surface of the wooden table catches the morning light pouring in through the wide window, dust mites drifting lazily in the air around them. Steve shifts impatiently beside Y/N, his knee bouncing ever so slightly. One hand taps against his trouser clad thigh in a nervous rhythm, the other firmly wrapped around Y/Nās fingers like heās afraid if he lets go, the moment might slip through their hands. In front of them, papers lie neatly stacked upon the brown mahogany surface, a pen resting upright in its holder, waiting to be picked up. Steve stares at the top page for a long moment, his eyes drifting over the flurry of letters scattered over the paper before swallowing.
āWhat if theyāve changed their mindā¦?āĀ
He asks quietly and Y/N tilts her head toward him as she speaks, āI donāt think theyāre allowed to do that this far in.ā
āTheyāre not?ā
āI donāt think so,ā she says honestly but then adds with a small huff, āI donāt know⦠I hope not.ā
He exhales loudly through his nose glancing down at his watch for what must be the fifth time in the last two minutes. The leather strap sits snuggly around the skin of his wrist and a faint ticking fills the silence between them. The gold band of his wedding ring catches the sunlight streaming in from the window as he moves his hand back down to continue tapping against his thigh.
Outside the window, Hawkins looks as it does every other day, how itās looked for a while now. Kids run past the window laughing at each other followed by a small group of teens, their bikes rattling over the pavement. A car cruises by slowly, the hum of its engine is now a distant sound as everything appears unbothered. Uncomplicated and moving forward.
āHeyāĀ
Y/N murmurs and Steveās eyes draw away from the scene on the other side of the window as looks at her immediately. āItās okay,ā she says softly. āShe probably just got caught up in something and is running late.ā
āI know,ā he replies nodding, though his grip tightens around her hand. āI justā¦ā She raises her free hand, moving to rest it gently on his shoulder and giving it a small, grounding squeeze.
āJust relax, okay?ā He lets out a deep breath, shoulders finally dropping as two of his fingers come up between the material of his white shirt and neck, slipping between them and pulling down an inch to loosen the tie sitting too tight around his neck. āI know baby, I know,ā he says quietly.Ā
āThis just⦠means a lot to you. It- it means a lot to me.ā
Her mouth curves into a soft smile, emotion welling in her chest as she opens her mouth to respond to him but she stops before she can speak as the sound of the door behind them creaking open fills the room. An older woman steps inside, her lilac colored skirt swishing lightly around her ankles. She pauses just inside the doorway, adjusting a folder and mug in her hand. āIām so sorry Iām late,ā she says warmly.Ā
āGot caught by someone at the doors on my way here, you wonāt believe how many people want to talk to you in the morning.ā
However her voice appears as nothing but a quiet buzz as Y/Nās already looking at Steve, eyes shining and he can't help the wide, uncontrollable smile that spreads across his face as he looks back at her, joy and nerves all merging together. He drops his gaze for a moment, shaking his head slightly as if to compose himself, thumb brushing over the back of her hand. The woman moves around the desk and settles into the chair opposite them, setting her mug down with a soft clink, the smell of coffee reaching Y/Nās nose as it drifts through the room. āBig day today,ā she says kindly, folding her hands over the folder.Ā
āHow are we feeling?ā
āGreat!āĀ
Steve answers immediately, a little too quick like heās bracing for a test and Y/N canāt help but let out a soft laugh, thumb brushing over the back of his hand. āSorry, Martha, weāre just-ā She exhales, smiling wide now,Ā
āWeāre excited.ā
Marthaās expression softens at the sight of the two adults in front of her, āThatās wonderful, Iām really happy you are.ā They both nod, almost in unison. Steveās hand slips over to rest on Y/Nās thigh and she can feel his fingers pressing into the material of her clothes, she can sense the steady thrum of nervous energy beneath his skin. Martha opens the folder and begins flipping through the papers. āAlright. Weāll go through a few formalities, just to make sure everything is clear for you two.ā They listen intently as she speaks, words careful and practiced.Ā

Y/N finds her attention drifting and she glances sideways at Steve.
Heās leaned slightly forward in the chair, his brows knit in concentration like heās afraid to miss something important. Heās nodding along as Martha talks, chiming in with the occasional āyesā or āokayā. He looks older now, not necessarily in a way that frightens her. The crows feet by his eyes are just the slightest bit more noticeable and his hair isnāt stiff with hairspray anymore though still perfectly in place. She knows he spent a little longer getting ready this morning, she watched him in the mirror, smoothing his tie and checking his reflection twice.
Heās changed.
But somehow.. he hasnāt at all.
Still earnest, still attentive. Still the same boy whoād throw himself headfirst into danger for people he loves.Ā
Still her Steve.
~ ~ ~
The old RV hums beneath them as they drive, its tyres rolling over the road on the way back to the trailer park. Itās calmer now, itās ironic how it only seems to comes before something that could go horribly wrong. Nancy and Robin sit alongside Dustin and Eddie by the table in the back, the two boys joking loudly with each other as the two girls roll their eyes at them. On the bench at the back of the van, Max and Lucas sit close together, arm brushing against each other occasionally, the faintest sound of Kate Bush being heard through the headphones of Maxās walkman. Y/Nās sitting in the passenger seat up front, her eyes drifting over to Steve as he sits behind the wheel, hands upon the leather of the steering wheel. Occasionally sheāll look out the dusty window of the van, the trees blurring as they drive by, but her eyes always end up on the boy beside her. āYou okay?ā he asks her and she hums back,Ā Ā
āYeah, just tired.ā
āSame.ā
He nods and they fall back into silence, random yells from the two boys in the back filling the quiet between them. It's a comfortable silence, one that doesnāt awkwardly beg to be filled. Steve clears his throat, glancing at her sideways.Ā
āHey, uh⦠random question.ā
She smiles faintly, āYouāre terrible at sounding casual Harrington.ā
He sighs dramatically then says, āYou know what forget itā
āNo go on, what?ā she prompts, she shifts slightly in her seat to face him, knees now pointing in his direction. He hesitates, fingers tapping lightly against the leather of the steering wheel.Ā
āDo you ever think about⦠after all this?ā
She looks at him, his face is softer than usual in the low light of the setting sun, dried patches of blood cling to his hairline and his neck is bruised with an ugly purple and red hue. āSometimes,ā she says.Ā
āWhy?ā
He shrugs, but thereās something hopeful tucked into his voice, āI donāt know. I was just thinking I donāt wanna do this forever⦠fighting monsters and almost dying all the timeā Her lips curve in an amused smile, āYouāre telling me.ā He chuckles, then exhales.Ā
āI think I wanna settle down..ā
āSettle down?ā she repeats.Ā
āYou? King Steve?ā
āCāmon why do you sound so surprised!" he laughs at her reaction, āAndāā he glances at the girl sitting near him, voice dropping a little,Ā
ā-I think Iād be good at it.ā
āAt what?ā
āThe whole⦠life thing.ā He swallows. āHouse with a big backyard and a white picket fence⦠Kids.ā
She blinks surprised, not because itās strange or some other worldly concept heās talking about but because heās saying it so plainly.
āKids?āĀ
āYeah six little nuggets, three girls and three boysā he says, grinning now, āand every summer I figured weād pack into something like- thisā he says as he gestures loosely around the RV they sit in with one hand, his other still firmly around the wheel as he continues, āand weād just drive around and see the countryā
āSix!?ā
She repeats, laughing gently. He winces but hums amused under his breath, āYeah, okay, that sounded intense. I just- I donāt know. I see myself with like⦠a bunch of them.ā
She tilts her head toward him, lips tugging up. āIām just saying, what are you trying to do Harrington? Start a baseball team?ā
He shakes his head, his cheeks rising as a smile creeps its way onto his lips, āAlright, alright, maybe six is⦠ambitious.ā
āA littleā she teases.
āBut-ā he adds, glancing at her, suddenly more thoughtful, āI like the chaos. I mean, look at the kids weāve already got.ā He gestures vaguely toward the back of the van, towards Dustin, Max and Lucas and Y/N smiles fondly. āThey didnāt turn out that bad,ā he continues. āLoud and seriously annoying- but good.ā
āYeah,ā she says quietly, āthey are.ā
She looks out the window then, watching the dark blur past, her reflection staring back at her looks calm and put together but her chest aches. She knows the truth about her future. Has known for a long time. A past filled with doctorās offices and gentle voices. Words like unlikely and infertile wrapped in faux sympathy she didnāt ask for. She swallows, her fingers curling in her lap. āWell,ā she says, forcing an easy tone,Ā
āI hope you find someone who can give you all that someday.ā
Steve frowns, confused.
āWhat?ā
She shrugs still not looking at him, āThe house. The nuggets. The whole domestic package youāre looking for.ā He turns his studying her face like heās trying to understand what sheās saying to him, he pauses a moment before he says simply,Ā
āI already haveāĀ
āOh, have you now?āĀ
Her heart stutters in her chest and she tries to cover it up by letting out a small, disbelieving huff. He nods his head firmly, āYeah,ā his voice comes out softer now but still certain.Ā
āIām looking at her.ā
She finally turns to look at him and god, itās worse than she expected.
Thereās no hesitation in his eyes, no space for doubt. Just this open, earnest affection that Steveās only ever had for her. Like the future he was talking about isnāt abstract at all. Her smile wavers, barely noticeable, but her chest feels heavy because she wants that life too.Ā
Wants it more than anything.Ā
Wants to give him everything he dreams of.
But she canāt
The van slows as it approaches a red light, the red glow washing over the dashboard. Steveās still smiling to himself, thumb tapping in firm beats against the steering wheel, like the future heās just pictured is something solid between them. She exhales,Ā
āSteve⦠I-ā her voice wavers, āI canāt.ā
He chuckles lightly, misunderstanding her immediately. āOkay, okay, I know six is a lot-ā she stays quiet, āI mean, Iām flexible,ā he continues, āfour sounds good too. Even numbers right? And honestly, I think I could be talked down to three if you really-ā
ā-Steve.ā
The way she says his name makes him stop and he turns toward her ready to ask whatās wrong, but the look on her face steals the words straight out of his mouth. Her eyes are glossy, fixed somewhere in the space between him and the windshield,
āI canāt even give you one.ā
The words land wrong. They donāt make sense to him. He searches her face, his brow furrowing. āWhatā¦?ā He swallows.Ā
āYou mean, you donāt want kids?ā
She lets out a small, broken laugh, shaking her head immediately as the words leave his mouth. āNo. God no. I do. Of course I do.ā She presses her lips together, āIāve watched the party grow up, Steve. Iāve seen who theyāve become, how could I not want that? How could I not want to be part of something like that?ā His chest tightens as he shakes his head slowly, his expression unreadable. āI donāt think I understand.ā She finally looks into his eyes, āSteve,ā she says quietly, voice trembling now,Ā
āI canāt have children.ā
For a moment, he just stares at her.
āBut you just said you wanted them,ā he says softly, like heās trying to put together a puzzle that has missing parts and canāt be completed. āI do,ā she answers immediately. āI want them so badly.ā Her voice cracks,
āI just- I canāt.ā
The light above them turns green but the van doesnāt move. Steve turns around in his chair, facing her now and he reaches out, hands gentle but unsteady, cupping her face like heās afraid she might disappear. āHey,ā he whispers.Ā
āHey, look at me.ā
She does, and he can see the tears now pooling in her eyes, her bottom lip now red and raw from being stuck between her teeth. He breathes. āOh, babyā¦ā He pulls her into him without thinking, forehead pressing to hers, his hand cradling the back of her head, āI donāt care,ā he says fiercely, almost desperate.Ā
āDo you hear me? I donāt care. I donāt want kids if itās not with you.ā
Her tears slip down her cheeks and his thumb moves to wipe the water off her skin, āSteve, you say that now-ā
āNo,ā he interrupts, pulling back just enough to make her look at him. āI mean it. You are my future. Not some hypothetical version of it Iāve created in my mind.ā He presses a kiss to her forehead and then her temple, āWeāll figure it out,ā he murmurs,Ā
āWhatever it looks like. Itās going to be together.ā
~ ~ ~
The pen doesnāt even hover for a second before Steve brings it down to the page and his signature comes out steady despite the way his leg is still bouncing beneath the desk. When he finishes he slides the paper to his right, turning his head to look at Y/N. Thereās nothing uncertain in his expression and Y/N takes the pen from his fingers. The metal is cool against her skin as she signs carefully, every curve of her name neat. When sheās done, she places the pen back into its holder and looks down at the page.
Their signatures sit side by side at the bottom.
Together.
Martha slides the papers toward herself, adjusting the wire-rimmed glasses resting on her nose as she reviews them. Y/N feels Steveās hand settle gently against her thigh again her own hand drifts to rest over his, thumb brushing the familiar ridge of his wedding band. āAlright,ā Martha says satisfied after a moment, āI think the majority of documents and paperwork have already been taken care of. There are just a few minor things left like another house check of course, but Iām sure that can be organized soon so you can settle back at home.ā She inhales, about to continue.
āIn around two days-ā
āWhen can we see-ā
Steve speaks at the same time as her and they both freeze. Martha looks up, amused and Steve flushes immediately, his cheeks turning slightly pink.Ā
āSorry.ā
āSorry,ā Y/N echoes laughing softly, āweāre just really-ā
ā-happy.āĀ
Steve finishes, unable to help himself and Martha closes the folder with a fond smile. āPlease donāt apologize. Itās actually very warming to see you both so excited.ā She tilts her head slightly. āIt definitely lets me know Iāve made the right choice.ā Steve and Y/N exchange a look, smiling wider than they mean to. Martha raises her hands slipping her glasses off her face folding them, āIn response to your question though, Mr. Harrington,ā Martha continues,Ā
āDoes now sound good to you?ā
āYes,ā Y/N answers immediately before Steve can even open his mouth. āPlease.ā
Martha smiles once more, sliding the folder neatly into a drawer and the soft thump signifies its closing as she stands. āWell then,ā she says, grabbing her mug off the table, ācome on, before your husband wears a hole in my floor with that leg.ā Y/N laughs, turning toward Steve whoās looking at her his eyes a little wide, the tip of his ears pink.Ā
āYou heard that?ā
āPretty hard not to,ā Y/N teases, squeezing his hand as they stand together.Ā
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Their house sits a little back from the road, light blue and two stories tall with a grey tiled roof that slopes gently. White paneling frames every window and lines the front porch. They didnāt rush into buying the house, they couldnāt have even if theyād wanted to.
It took years of saving, patience and discipline. Steveās salary came in steady but modest from the high school, split between teaching health classes and coaching little league whilst Y/Nās income filled in the gaps; long days at the library, shelving and cataloguing and helping kids find books they were looking for, followed by afternoons spent teaching art at Hawkins Elementary School, paint smudged on her clothes by little fingers fingers more often than not. Grocery lists would be stuck to the fridge, and envelopes labeled House started to get tucked into the drawer at the end of every month. They spent nights with cheap wine and instead of lavish dinners they couldnāt justify yet. Every small sacrifice felt easier because they shared it together, but eventually, the envelopes grew heavy enough for them to start really planning. Theyād made a list of houses around town, circled a handful of viewings on their calendar hung up by the couch. The first one was scheduled for a quiet Tuesday afternoon. Steve had joked that it was just a āwarm up for the real thing.āĀ
However, the moment they stepped inside, all their jokes stopped mattering.Ā
The light blue house felt⦠right. The rooms werenāt perfect yet but they had potential. Sunlight spilled in through the windows and the backyard stretched wide and green. Y/N had stood near the fence already imagining flower beds while Steve started planning off imaginary spaces, pointing out where a grill could go and how the tree near the back could be made into a hell of a swing.
~ ~ ~
āWe should probably still look at the othersāĀ
Steve had said finally, though his voice lacked any real conviction as he looked around the living room. The space was empty, and sunlight stretched across the hardwood floor stopping right before their shoes. Y/N smiled at him.Ā
āDo you want to?ā
He hesitated, gaze drifting to the window and then to the doorway as if searching for some invisible flaw. āI mean⦠weāre supposed to, right? Thatās what people do.ā He glanced back at her.Ā
āWhat if you find something better?ā
Ā āI donāt think thatās a possibility, Steve.ā
She shook her head, stepping closer and he raised an eyebrow, āYou donāt?ā She looked around again, slow and thoughtful. āNo. You know that feeling when you walk into a place and you just know. Iām pretty sure I know.ā Her eyes met his,Ā
āDonāt you?ā
He let out a quiet laugh under his breath, rubbing the back of his neck. āYeah,ā he admitted.Ā
āI do.ā
There was a pause, āSo,ā he said, squeezing her hand, āyouāre not gonna secretly regret this in six months and say something like, āWe shouldāve seen the one with the bay windowā?ā She laughed softly as she took his hands and steps closer to him, his hands sliding around her waist, moving down to rest on her hips.Ā
āBaby there's a bay window in the main bedroom.ā
He smiles sheepishly, āOkay, bad example but you get the point.ā
She moved her hand up his arms, both of them meeting behind his neck, one of her hands threading through the curls at the nape of his neck. āThis feels like us,ā she murmured.Ā
āI donāt want to keep looking for something when we already found it.ā
āAlright,ā he said quietly, āwhatever makes my girl happy makes me happyā
They canceled the rest of the viewings that afternoon.
~ ~ ~
The backyard of their home is Y/Nās domain. Flower beds line the edges of the grass, bursts of colour litter the soil. Daisies, yellow cornflowers and red poppies have become stubborn blooms that come back every year no matter what the Hawkins weather throws at them. She tends to them early in the mornings of the weekends or late in the evenings of the weekdays, sometimes managing to convince Steve to join her with dirt under their nails and a radio humming softly nearby.
By the patio sits the grill which Steve had absolutely insisted they splurge on as, āno one wants to be known for hosting a bad barbecue.ā Now itās well used with faint grease marks, smudged on the metal of its lid. Itās hosted new neighbors, old friends that have moved away and even kids from Steveās little league team with their parents.Ā
Tucked near the back corner of the yard is a small wooden shed. Inside, shelves are cluttered with gardening tools, the corners of the small space holding bags of soil and more empty pots. Thereās a faint smell of earth and wood and itās definitely just a shed. Definitely not a place theyāve ever disappeared into on warm afternoons when their home is filled to the brim with guests under the guise of āchecking if the sprinkler is running,ā only to emerge later flushed and clothes a little askew.
On the other side of the blue building, the front yard lays wide and green, grass stretching thick and healthy beneath the white picket fence that wraps around the property. Steve built it himself, stubborn about wanting to do it the right way, even though the job took twice as long as planned after paint brushes were abandoned in favor of the two of them flicking white streaks of paint at each other. There are still faint marks on the pavement by the fence if you look closely, small imperfections left behind because neither of them could bring themselves to sand them out.
At the end of the pathway leading up to the front door, just inside the fence, thereās the sturdy metal mailbox. Painted carefully across the front in Y/Nās neat handwriting are the words,Ā
The Harringtons
On the other side, pressed into the metal with dried blue paint, are their handprints. Steveās larger palm beside Y/Nās, thumbs overlapping just enough to form a small, imperfect heart between them.Ā
~ ~ ~
The mailbox had seemed like a simple enough idea at first, a little paint and a paint brush accompanied by a quiet afternoon. How hard could it be? Theyād spread old newspapers across the grass by the metal box which stood straight to attention. Y/N carefully rolled up the sleeves on one of Steve's old shirts which sheād stolen for painting when they started to renovate the rooms in the house, it was too covered in splotches of paint, wood varnish and odd pieces of masking tape to be saved now. Steve hovered nearby, his own sleeves rolled up, already speckled with color as he cracked open the small tin of bright blue paint. āOkay,ā he said, inspecting the mixed paint,Ā
āMoment of truth.ā
She dipped her paintbrush into the tin carefully before starting to paint a thick layer of the paint onto her palm and fingers. As she placed the brush back into the tin she wiggled her fingers at Steve as she laughed. Steve grinned in response as he less gracefully, pressed his palm against hers, coating his hand in the sticky substance.Ā
āReady?āĀ
He asked as he looked over to the bare mailbox. They leaned in together, pressing their hands against the side of the mailbox; hers smaller, his larger. He waited a moment as she pulled her thumb away from the metal so he could place his own down, the imprint of their thumbs overlapping just right. When they pulled away, the little heart between them was unmistakable.
Y/N smiled, still admiring it when Steve stepped closer, paint-slicked fingers finding her waist. His hand slid down without thinking, resting squarely against the back of her denim shorts as he kissed her, Y/Nās eyes fluttering shut as his hand squeezed the denim material slightly, lips working against each other. She kissed him back for a moment- then froze.
āā¦Steve.ā
āYeah?ā he mumbled against her lips. āWhat hand did you just put on my ass?ā He blinked, pulling away, āUh... My left?ā Slowly, she turned her head to look at the mailbox.
There, plain as day was his left handprint.
She looked back at him. āSteve.ā He followed her gaze, eyes widening just a fraction before he burst out laughing. She spun around.Ā
āYou asshole!ā
Right there on the back of her shorts was a perfect blue handprint, fingers splayed like a signature across her ass. āThis isnāt funny,ā she said, trying and failing to sound mad.Ā
āThis is my favorite pair!ā
He wrapped his arms around her from behind, paint smudging across her clothes some more.Ā
āWe can get you another pair, baby.ā
She tried to protest, but he was already pulling her closer, kissing her again. She melted into it, hand coming up to cup his cheek as she laughed softly into his mouth. When she finally pulled back, breathless and grinning, she froze again.
Across his cheek was her handprint smeared in bright blue.
Inside, itās warm, the house not just decorated but evidently lived in. A pile of shoes is clustered by the door, coats spilling over the coat hanger. Further inside, plants spill from every available surface, leafy vines trailing down shelves, smaller pots of cacti clustered on windowsills where the afternoon light catches them just right to keep them nourished. The living room is painted a soft, pale yellow that always seems to glow, even when the sun's already set. In the corner, a record player hums quietly, needle resting between the grooves of the vinyl spinning beneath it. Beside it, a small wooden cupboard holds shelves which are slowly filling up with different vinyls. Some album covers jut out at uneven angles, The Clash, Kate Bush, followed by Metallica and Tiffany, house-warming gifts from friends who insisted their tastes were essential to the collection.Ā
The dining room is much louder. A large oval table dominates the space, surrounded by chairs that donāt quite match, stolen from the garden, thrifted, dragged in from other rooms because there are simply too many people to seat properly. The wobble gives one of them away immediately.
āWhy do I get the wobbly chair?āĀ
Lucas complains, gripping the edge as it shifts beneath him. āWhy canāt you take it? Youāre lighter than me.ā Max doesnāt even look up from her plate as she serves up food for herself,Ā
āDo I need to remind you how many bones I broke?ā she says calmly. āI think Iāve earned the good chair.ā
Dustin snorts and Will laughs into hand while Mike grins openly as Max finally looks up, sticking her tongue out at Lucas, and leans back smugly. Lucas shakes his head, but heās smiling too.
On the other side of the table, Joyce and Hopper start to talk to Steve about his job. Joyce leans forward a little, her elbows resting on the table as she asks in genuine curiosity. āSo⦠howās the team doing this season?ā Steve shrugs, a grin tugging at his lips.Ā
āHonestly? They suck. Canāt win to save their lives.ā
āSteve!ā Nancy laughs out, looking over at him as she scolds him. In return the brunette raises his hands, āNo, Iām joking,ā he added quickly. āTheyāre great. Itās an honor to be their coach.ā Robin, leaning against the table with her arms crossed, jokes, āAnd their sex ed teacher- well, later on, I guess.ā Steve groans at her, shaking his head, āYouāre never gonna let me live that down, are you?ā
āSure wonāt, dingus,ā she says as she pats his shoulder only for him to playfully shove her hand away. Joyceās eyes wander over to the wooden TV unit, littered with an array of miss matched picture frames. One of the framed photos catches her attention. āOh, is that your team?ā she asked. Steve grins as he looks over to the frame. The photo captured him crouched down at the kidsā level, a sea of blue and white uniforms all around him. His blue baseball cap sat slightly crooked on his head, and the kids were ecstatic; arms thrown up, mouths wide in triumphant shouts. Derek held up a tiny trophy, beaming pure joy and excitement. āYeah,ā Steve said, glancing at Y/N, who was sitting beside him, passing down to Will a tray of home made garlic bread. She was smiling softly, hands still faintly holding onto the smell of garlic from her earlier cooking.Ā
āCourtesy of Y/N.ā
She looked over to him with a small nod, a soft smile lighting her face. Joyce tilted her head to look over to her son. āThatās thanks to your camera I assume?ā Hopper says to the boy sitting beside Nancy. Jonathan shrugged, a little sheepish smile creeping onto his face,Ā
āYou like it?ā
āLike it? She loves it. I canāt get that thing out of her hands.ā
Steve nudges Y/N with his elbow and the girl shakes her head and bumps her shoulder into Steveās, laughing softly, looking over to Jonathan she responds,Ā
āI really do love it, thank you.ā
He smiles warmly, āI had a feeling it would get put to use.ā
āIt really does.āĀ
Y/N says, glancing over at Steve again, the smile tugging at her eyes. The room was warm with chatter and laughter, and the faint scent of tomato and basil swirling around above the table. Mismatched chairs scraped lightly against the wooden floor as the kids bounced in their seats laughing loudly with each other. Meanwhile, Nancy leaned back in her chair, glancing at Joyce and Hopper. āSo howās Montauk?ā she asked casually, sipping her glass of red wine. Joyceās face softened, a little reminiscent smile tugging at her lips.Ā
āOh, itās great,ā she says her voice light.
āHowās the new job Hop?ā
Y/N adds and Hopper lets out a long sigh in response, leaning back like he needs the chair to hold him up. āWell⦠itās a job, for sure.ā Y/N raises an eyebrow in surprise.Ā
āIs it that bad?ā
Hopper groaned theatrically, āOh, you have no idea.ā
Joyce shakes her head at her husband, swatting his stomach with the back of her hand,āHeās just being dramatic. He thought it was going to be sitting around eating doughnuts all day but it's not.ā Hopper shot her a mock glare, though it didnāt reach his eyes.Ā
āThe payās better, thatās for sure.ā
āWell,ā Nancy shrugs with a smile, āthatās always a bonus isnāt it?ā Hopper nods a small grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. āYou can say that again,ā he admits.
āThis is really good Y/N, thanks for inviting us.ā
Y/N smiles softly at the younger boy, āItās our pleasure, Will.ā She says as she leans into Steve slightly, a grin spreading across his face at the feeling of his girl against his side.Ā
āYeah. We gotta fill out this big, empty house somehow, right?ā
Robinās voice cut into the conversation from beside him, sly and teasing, āI can think of one way you can do that- Mr. Sex Ed.ā
Nancy and Jonathan broke out into laughter together exchanging amused looks as Jonathan places his cold bottle of beer down onto the table. Steve, cheeks reddening slightly, waved his hands dramatically. āUh- Robin? There are children present at this table,ā he says, gesturing subtly with his eyes toward the other side where Dustin, Mike, Lucas, and Max were perched. Dustin, clearly not fazed, calls out from across the table,Ā
āDude, weāre in college what are you talking about?ā
Y/N lets out a soft laugh, shaking her head, the sound warm in Steveās ear. Joyce, shaking her head but smiling, looks over to the two of them, āAll jokes aside⦠you two? No plans for any kiddos running around?ā Mike looks over chiming in, honest and a little teasing, āYou guys would be great parents. We spent most of our adolescence with you and look how we turned out.ā Y/N let out a breath, playfully exasperated, glancing over at Steve before saying,Ā
āYeah⦠itās not looking too good, Steve. I think we should save our future children.ā
āHey!ā Mike barked out, pretending to be offended, while Dustin took the cue to flip Steve the bird from across the table. Hopperās finger shoots out, wagging at Dustin in mock scolding, the younger boy raising his hands in defeat, a grin still plastered across his face. The warm buzz of laughter had barely settled when the shrill ring of the phone cut through the air. Y/N started to rise, but Steveās hand landed lightly on her thigh, stopping her. āIāll go,ā he says softly, a reassuring smile tugging at his lips.Ā
āDonāt worry. Itās probably work or something.ā
āYou sure?ā she asked.
āYeah,ā he replied, giving her thigh a gentle squeeze before letting go, the legs of his chair scratched against the floor as he stood up and stretched slightly.
She watched him as he made his way toward the kitchen, the sound of his steps soft on the hardwood floor. The jeans he wore clung to his figure, sculpting his legs, hugging him just right. Her eyes lingered for a moment longer than they should have, a small, knowing smile tugging at her lips before she finally tore her gaze away, it was funny how even in something as mundane as jeans, he managed to make her heart race. Y/N leaned back in her chair, fork idly resting on her plate as she glanced over at Jonathan.Ā
āSo howās the anti-capitalist motion picture coming along?ā she asked, a small smirk tugging at her lips. Jonathan shrugged, a little tired talking about the subject but still excited.Ā
āGood. Yeah⦠Iāve filmed it all, now all thatās left is editing.ā
Robin snorted from where she sat opposite him, āEditing? Thatās easy. No way it takes that long.ā
Jonathan gave her a look, half of amusement and half a warning, āYeah, letās just say you guys still have a while to wait until you see it.ā Nancy shook her head, laughing as she raised her napkin and wiped away some of the tomato sauce that had been caught in her bottom lip. She started to reminisce, āI still canāt get over how much red paint we used to film that scene in your uncleās basement in Philly.ā Robin groaned dramatically, throwing up her hands.Ā
āOh my god Nance! I still have stains in my clothes from that night. Iāve washed them a hundred times!ā
Nancy huffs out, āWell my shirt wasn't salvageable."
Y/N lets the conversation fall into a dull hum, her eyes drifting lazily over the table. Her gaze lands on Hopper and Joyce, the older couple sharing a quiet moment of contentment. Joyce lightly tapped Hopperās forearm with her napkin, laughter bright and he broke into a small smile, his mustache twitching as it moved with the grin. Her eyes then slid down the length of the oval-shaped table, catching the younger teens at the far end of the table, now all grown up- well maybe not completely. Lucas had just tossed a cherry tomato toward Dustin, who leaned back, mouth open in an attempt to catch it. Max rolled her eyes, laughing at their pathetic coordination as the tomato bounced off Dustinās cheek and rolled under the table, joining a small pile of stray crumbs. Mike and Will, sitting next to each other, were in a quiet conversation. Will nodded at something Mike said, responding with a small laugh, and Mikeās face lit up in a smile that seemed to ease them both into laughter.Ā
It was peaceful.Ā
Domestic.Ā
Looking back four years ago, Y/N could barely begin to imagine this life. After everything theyād all been through, the chaos, the horrors, the loss. She never would have imagined evenings like this. Laughter filled the air, friends and family scattered around the table. Her chest warmed with gratitude, and she silently thanked whatever higher power that had brought them all here, into her house.Ā
Into her and Steveās home.
Steveās warm hand settled on her shoulder, pulling Y/N away from her thoughts as he lowered into the chair beside her. He lifted his bottle of beer to his lips for a sip, the cold glass slick with condensation leaving a damp circle on the table as he set it back down. āEverything okay?ā Y/N questioned her eyes still lingering on him. āYeah,ā he replied, a small smile tugging at his lips.Ā
āIt was just Martha. She said the dateās been moved forward⦠so we can go tomorrow instead.ā
āReally?ā Y/Nās eyes lit up instantly, that glint of excitement and joy sparkling in them that made Steveās heart pump just a beat faster. āYeah baby,ā he said, voice warm, careful, watching her like she was the only person in the room.Ā
āYou happy with that?ā
Y/Nās lips curved into a playful smile, āDonāt ask stupid questions Mr. Harrington.ā
Before he could respond, she leaned forward, pressing a quick kiss to his lips. Steveās hand, resting on her hip, gave a gentle squeeze in return, fingers brushing under her jumper against the skin of her side as if to claim the moment just for them. They pulled back just enough to catch each otherās eyes, the quiet between them being noticed by Jonathanās eyes, which had drifted over to them when Steve came back.Ā
āYou guys look happy⦠did you just get promoted from Little Leagues to High School or what?ā
Steve chuckled, shaking his head, āNo⦠itās not that.ā
Nancy looked towards them, eyebrows raised in curiosity. āSo⦠what is it?ā
Steveās gaze flicked to Y/N, who was looking back at him with that soft, tender expression he knows so well. Robinās voice cut through the quiet like a whip.Ā
āWhatās with all this secrecy guys?ā
Steveās hand came up to rub the back of his neck, then settled on the table with a soft thump. The laughter, chatter, and clatter of the dinner table seemed to fade as every pair of eyes slowly turned toward them. āWow,ā Steveās voice carried across the table.
āGot a whole audience now.ā
Y/N let out a quiet entertained hum cutting through the tension. āShould we?ā Steve questioned, looking over at her. āYeah I think we should,ā she says with a small nod, her hand brushing against his under the table. From the other side, Dustin was staring at them eyes wide, voice all theatrical.Ā
āYouāre killing us here guys!ā
āWellā¦ā she started softly, voice careful but certain. āMe and Steve-ā
Ā āOh my god⦠youāre pregnant?!ā
Max, unable to contain herself, suddenly piped up from the other side of the table, eyes wide. The words hit like a strike of lightning at the table, snapping every pair of eyes to Y/N and Steve. Laughter, shock and awe mingling across the table in a single heartbeat. She let out a small, nervous laugh, glancing down at her and Steveās joined hands under the table. Y/N felt Steveās thumb brushing against her skin, the same grounding comfort he had given her that day in the RV.
āNo, no weāre not pregnant,ā Steve says, resulting in everyone looking at each other a little confused. Lucas looks over to the two as he speaks,Ā
āNo offence guys but Iām really lost nowāĀ
āYeah me too manāĀ
Dustin adds on and Y/N lets the quiet settle just long enough for her to begin again. āMe and Steve weāve been talking for a while after we got the house, andā¦itās so big and-ā
Ā ā-empty?ā
Steve cuts in gently, finishing her sentence for her with a grin which resulted in Y/N rolling her eyes at him but nodding in response. āYeah. Empty. So we started volunteering at the orphanage in town after everything that happened withā¦ā She paused for a beat, unsure if she should bring up the past, the grief everyone had worked so hard to move on from. Steve leaned forward, voice warm and steady, picking up her thread.Ā
āSince then, theyāve needed a little extra help and we noticed one of the flyers they put up for volunteers so me and Y/N have been helping out on the weekends.ā
All eyes were on them now, the room falling into a hush. āSoā¦?ā Willās curious voice broke the quiet. Y/N took a breath as she continued. āSo when we were working there, we started discussing um, discussing starting our own family.ā She glanced at Steve, whose gaze never left hers, steady and full of love.Ā
āAnd thereās some things we had to consider⦠because itās a little harder for us.ā
Steveās thumb brushed gently over her knuckles in silent reassurance. Steveās voice was steady as he continued. āA little over half a year ago we met a little baby girl who came to join us after her mother died. Weāve spent a lot of time with herā¦ā Y/N nodded, her eyes shining.Ā
āSheās so amazing⦠sheās just- sheās just become a little vessel of light in our lives over these past months and me and Steveā¦āĀ
āWe really love herāĀ
He said softly, a tender smile spreading across his face. They exchanged that quiet look between each other before their eyes shifted to the rest of the room. The kids at the table looked on with quietly wide-eyed curiosity, Joyceās hand was resting over her mouth, and she tried to blink away the tears gathering in her eyes, clearly overwhelmed, Hopper's hand resting on her shoulder.
āSo⦠weāve adopted her,ā Y/N said, āand the phone call today was from the woman handling our case. She let us know that tomorrow⦠she can officially come home with us.ā
A hush fell over the table, the fresh news sinking in. Finally, Dustin piped up, his voice a little wavering, scratching the back of his head as he looked at Steve,
āIs that⦠is that why you didnāt let me go into that room by the bathroom on the first floor?ā
āYeah, man. Thatās the nursery- all set up and ready to go.ā
Not a second passes before the room erupts. Congratulations tumble over one another, voices overlapping, the kids cheering a chorus of āBaby Harrington!ā and clapping filled the room which was silent moments before. Itās loud and chaotic and in a way that makes Y/Nās chest hurt in the best way possible. Nancy is the first to reach her as sheās sitting on her right, eyes glassy as she takes Y/Nās hand in both of hers, squeezing it tight, āIām so happy for you guys,ā she says, voice breaking just a little. Y/N smiles at her, her ownĀ tears threatening now too, her thumb brushing over Nancyās knuckles. āThanks, Nance,ā she murmurs softly.Ā
Robin, on the other hand, had completely lost it.
āOh my god,ā she blurts out, already half-sobbing and half-laughing. āOh my god- Iām officially going to be Auntie Robin.ā She presses a hand to her chest dramatically. āIāve been waiting for this for so long. This is it! This is my purpose.ā Before Steve can even react, sheād thrown herself into his arms, clinging to him like a desperate koala and Steve lets out a surprised laugh, arms automatically wrapping around her to keep her from toppling over.
āOkay- okay- personal space BuckleyāĀ
He laughs, but thereās nothing but happiness in his voice, a grin stretching wide across his face. Joyce wipes at her cheeks with her napkin, letting out a breathy little laugh as she tries to compose herself. āOh- this is just⦠this is so amazing you guys,ā she says, voice still thick with emotion.Ā
āHow old is she?ā
Steve straightens a little, pride unmistakable in his voice as he answers, āSheās turning one next weekend.ā
Jonathanās reacts immediately. āOh, weāve all have to come around and celebrate.ā
āOh yeah you do,ā Steve says easily, nodding. āY/Nās already pre-ordered the balloons at the decoration store.ā
āSteve!āĀ
Y/N groans, hitting his arm lightly and instinctively lifting her hands to hide her face. Her cheeks feel warm as laughter ripples around the table. āStop telling them that!ā He just canāt stop himself from grinning at her, completely unwavered.
āWhat? Youāre being prepared.ā
Robin leans across the table, delightedly reaching for Y/Nās hand who lets the girl take it, āI knew it. I knew you were gonna be that type of mom.ā Y/N peeks out from behind her other hand, smiling despite herself. Steve watches her with that same fond look he always does, his hand finding its way back to hers as the room buzzes with plans and excitement. Itās Mike who asks it, voice more interested than itās been all evening.
āWhatās her name?ā
Y/N turns her head instinctively toward Steve. His arm had come to rest along the back of her chair at some point, and as she leaned into him, it slid down naturally to curl around her shoulders, pulling her a little closer. She looks across the table, her eyes landing on Hopper. Her voice is shaky when she answers.
āHer nameās Jane.ā
She saw it immediately, the way Hopper pressed his lips together, nodding once slowly, his jaw tightening as his eyes glassed over. Joyceās hand reaches for his arm without a word, resting there in quiet understanding. Y/Nās throat tightens as she lifts her hand, wiping away the stray tear that slipped down her cheek.Ā
The name hangs in the air, heavy and saddening but full of love and good memories. Mike clears his throat, his voice a little unsteady, eyes fixed on the table as if heās gathering the courage to speak it out loud.Ā
āShe would be happy for you guys.ā
He doesnāt need to say her name. No one does. Itās the only person they've all been thinking about. Max starts nodding, letting out a teary huff, āYeah⦠she used to call you mom and dad.ā She pauses then adds,
āSteve, youāre mom of course.ā
Laughter breaks out again cutting through everyoneās emotions like a breath of air. Steve groans dramatically, leaning back in his chair. āCāmon, guys,ā he says, shaking his head. āYou canāt be ruining my reputation like this when little Jane gets here.ā Dustin grins from across the table. āDonāt you worry buddy,ā he says proudly.Ā
āSheāll know alllll about her dadās crazy adventures.ā
āAbsolutely not.ā
Steve just put a finger at him, mock-serious and Y/N laughs into Steveās shoulder, her hand curling into his where it rests on the table between their plates. The moment Dustin brings up their adventures, itās like a switch flips, the party all start talking at once, voices overlapping, the story spiraling wildly out of control within seconds as they recall the night at the Byers cabin all those years ago.
āIām telling you, he went down like a sack of potatoes,ā Dustin exclaims entertained, āThatās not true,ā Lucas argues laughing. āIt was more like-ā the boy pauses as he makes a motion with his hand, ā-face first.ā Max smiles looking at the boys, āand then Y/N saved his ass.ā Mike snorts, āShe literally dragged Steve by the collar.ā
On the other side of the table Steve makes an unamused sound, burying his face into the crook of Y/Nās neck as the other side of the table erupts into laughter. āGod,ā he mutters, voice muffled against her skin.Ā
āThey make me sound pathetic.ā
Y/N has to stop herself from laughing at him but her shoulders are already shaking as she curls an arm around his back, fingers threading into his hair. āYou were not pathetic,ā she says, fond but still teasing.Ā
āYou were unconscious.ā
āThat does not help my case,ā he mumbles, though the smile in his voice gave him away. āSo,ā Nancy says with a small knowing smile, looking between the two of them.Ā
āYouāre starting on your six little nuggets then?ā
Steveās hand squeezes Y/Nās side without thinking, pulling her in just a little closer. āDonāt you know it,ā Steve says, looking over at Y/N. āGonna have a whole mini team of Harringtons running around arenāt we.ā Jonathan rolls his eyes jokingly at his friend's remark.Ā
āYouāve already got one baseball team and youāre planning another?ā
Steve raises his hand in faux defence, āWhat can I say- gotta plan in advance.ā Hopper smiles at them then, something sadder tugging at his expression.Ā
āWhat is she like?ā
As he asked it, his thoughts flickered briefly back to the first time heād seen the two of them together. Back at the Byersā cabin, their voices raised, arguing over who was supposed to be in charge of the kids who were all sitting on Joyceās couch staring at the two cluelessly. It had been loud and messy, but even then Hopper had seen it; the way theyād moved in sync without realizing it, the way theyād both stepped in front of danger without hesitation to protect the ones they love. Heād known then that there was no future for either of them that didnāt involve each other, that didnāt involve kids. Now, seeing them sitting here, married, talking about adopting a little girl of their own made his chest tightened uncomfortably. His mind drifted- unavoidable- to El. To the ache of her memory in his mind that never went away. However, his chest warmed too, because now there was another little girl. Another child who would be loved and protected endlessly by this strange and stubborn little family theyād all built together. Y/Nās face lit up instantly at the mention of the girl,Ā
āOur little Jane?āĀ
āMmmhmmāĀ
Robin hums, eager to find out more as she rests her chin on her hand, arm now propped up on the table. Y/N sits up a little, one hand resting unconsciously over Steveās knee as she starts to talk, her voice filled with nothing but love.Ā
āSheās so smart and- Oh! Sheās so talkative! You wonāt believe how much she babbles. I hear it even when I go to sleep- just this constant little stream of noise in my head.ā
Steve snorts, āThe little lady never shuts up.ā Y/N laughed, āHey!ā reaching out to smack his chest lightly.Ā
summary: Struggling to keep her and JJās home afloat, Y/N turns to the only option that guarantees fast cash- stripping at a club on the Cut. But when Rafe Cameron catches her in the act, he sees the perfect opportunity to tighten his grip around her life.
Early morning light slipped through the long curtains which brushed against the wooden flooring, and thin golden rays stretched along the cool planks. Somewhere outside, the distant sound of birds and the hush of the ocean was not too far off, yet inside the room everything was slow and quiet. The sheets shifted softly as Rafe stirred behind her, an arm draped loosely around her waist. He pressed a kiss to her bare shoulder, his lips lingering against her skin, unhurried like he had nowhere else to be. Then another, and another. His lips traced upwards over the curve of her neck, her jaw, the apple of her cheek, before he brushed a gentle kiss to her forehead, then the tip of her nose, like he was memorising her. Y/N smiled before she even opened her eyes,
āAre you gonna eat me next?ā
She murmured, her voice still thick with sleep and amusement. Rafeās grin widened against her skin. āMmmm,ā he hummed thoughtfully before suddenly ducking beneath the covers,
āThat doesnāt sound like a bad idea...ā
She laughed immediately, the soft sound bouncing off the walls of the room as she started reaching to grab blindly for him.
āRafeā stop. Come back here.ā
He resurfaced with a lazy smile, propping himself up on one elbow so he could look at her properly as he balanced above her, his eyes soft in the morning light. He brushed his thumb softly against the skin of her cheek, lingering like he couldnāt help himself.
āG'morningā
He said quietly, like it was something meant only for her to hear. Y/N's hand reached up, slowly smoothing up his chest before looping around the back of his neck, fingers brushing into the prickly hair of his buzzcut. āHow'd you sleep?ā she asked after a quiet beat, stretching slightly beneath the sheets.
"Good"
"Yeah?"
"Probably cause you were by my side"
She hummed softly at that, a little smile tugging at her lips like she couldnāt help it. Her fingers lingered at the nape of his neck, thumb brushing slow, absent circles into his skin. āCareful,ā she murmured, tilting her head just enough to look at him through her lashes.
āYou keep talking like that and people are going to start thinking you've turned into a sap.ā She leaned in then, pressing a gentle kiss to the corner of his mouth and when she pulled back, her nose brushed his.
āGuess Iāll have to just take it like a manā
He responded, teasing, as Y/N rolled her eyes at him and slid her hand back down his chest to rest over his heart. She eased back into the soft pillow under her head as she spoke,
āYou know, since the weatherās so perfect, I was thinking we go to the beach today. Rafe made a low and dramatic sound immediately and buried his face deeper into the crook of her neck. āWhy,ā he murmured his voice muffled against her skin,
āCanāt we just stay right here all day?ā
He dropped more of his weight onto her like a human blanket, his body slung heavy across hers, legs intertwined under the sheets. She laughed, breath hitching.
āRafe, youāre so lazy.ā
āI am not lazy,ā
He argued, pressing a kiss just below her ear. āIām efficient. This- ā another kiss was pressed right under the pulse point on her neck, āāis the best possible option.ā She wriggled beneath him.
āI want to work on my tan.ā
āYouāre perfect already.ā
He said without missing a beat and she scoffed, āThat is not a valid argument.ā He shifted, tightening his hold on her slightly. āCāmon. I know deep down you want to stay in bed with me.ā
āNo, I donātā Rafe, get off me,ā she laughed, squirming.
āYouāre squashing me!ā
He groaned an exaggerated, stubborn 'no' and stayed exactly where he was, his arms slipping under her back to pull her closer to him. She slapped his bare back lightly a couple of times in a pathetic attempt to have him release her.
āPlease.ā
āNope.ā
āRafe.ā
āNo.ā
Y/N let out a small defeated sigh resting back into the mattress with his warm weight grounding her, then, without another word her brows raised slightly as an idea came to mind, and she raised her hand, dragging her nails slowly down his back.
His immediate response did not go unnoticed.
His annoyed groans had melted into something else entirely, deeper and quieter and he loosened his strong hold on her, forehead dropping deep into the crook where her neck meets her shoulder.
āā¦Thatās cheating.ā
He muttered and she smiled to herself and leaned in just enough to brush her lips near his ear, her voice soft and teasing.
āIf you let me get up⦠I could convince you why we should go to the beach.ā
"And how do you plan on doing that..."
āMaybe starting with a shower...?ā
He lifted his head slightly and for a split second and he just looked at her. His eyes flickered between hers before slipping down to her lips and back up to her irises again- then he rolled off her abruptly, shoving the sheets of his body and swinging his legs over the side of the bed, muscular arms pushing himself up off the mattress. She burst out laughing.
āWhat are you doing?ā
Rafe was standing up now, tugging and adjusting his sleeping shorts which still sat incredibly low, the defined 'v' at his hips dipped beneath the waistband, drawing her gaze whether she wanted it to or not. He glanced back over his shoulder as he walked over towards the ensuite in the room,
āGoing to showerā
Rafe slipped through the bathroom doorway, one hand pushing the door open as the other reached back to flick the light on. The door didnāt fully close behind him, left open just enough for the sound of running water to flow out into the bedroom. Y/N was still grinning when he disappeared, the kind of smile that felt too big and she pressed her face straight into the soft pillow, muffling a quiet, breathy groan as she squeezed her eyes shut to compose herself
āYou coming Bunny?ā
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The salty breeze rolled in gentle waves off the blue ocean. The warm sun shimmered across the surface of the water, the sky overhead a hue of pale blue with only a few wisps of white clouds drifting lazily across it. Two matching beach towels were stretched side by side on the sand, one half shaded by a tilted umbrella whilst the other fully in the sun. A small blue cooler sat at the foot of the towels, beads of condensation rolling down the plastic sides. Y/N had packed most of it, nothing fancy. She was lying on her stomach, chin resting on her folded arms as she soaked in the heat. Her back glowed under a thin sheen of tanning oil, her legs stretched out behind her, toes occasionally curling in the warm sand. Next to her Rafe was sprawled on his back, one arm folded beneath his head the other resting lazily across his stomach. He had his eyes closed, face tilted toward the sun but he wasnāt asleep, not really. His fingers twitched now and then like he was resisting the urge to reach out and touch her, and every once in a while he peeked at her from beneath his lashes. Rafe let out a dramatic groan, shifting on his towel like the sand had offended him and he pushed himself up onto his elbow whilst he pressed a hand into the small of his back wincing as if he were twice his age. āWhy couldnāt we just go to that beach club I wanted to take us to?ā he muttered, staring up at the umbrella with disdain.Ā
āMy back hurts and this sand is uneven thereās rocks.ā
Y/N let out a laugh, her shoulders shaking a little as she turned to look at him. She pushed herself up on her elbows, sunglasses sliding down her nose before she shoved them up to rest on top of her head.
āRafe,ā she said with mock offence, āweāre slumming it like Pogues. Embrace the struggle.ā
He rolled his eyes so hard it looked painful, āIām not a Pogue Y/N.āĀ
She narrowed her gaze at him playfully, āWell I amā
Rafe turned his head just enough to glance at her, raising a brow. āSo?ā
āSo donāt insult my culture duh?ā
That pulled a grin out of him as he brushed sand off his forearm. āI grew up in the trenches Rafe,ā she teased her eyes glinting beneath the hot summer sun. āYouāre lucky Iām even letting you seek refuge beside me, back in the day a guy like you in this area wouldāve gotten his cooler stolen and his tires slashed.ā
āOh yeah?ā he said, the smirk tugging at the edge of his mouth now, āand what would you have done?ā
She tilted her head innocently, shrugging one shoulder. āProbably distracted you while someone siphoned your gas.ā
āYou canāt be seriousā
āDead seriousāĀ
She shot back, reaching into the cooler to grab a soda and pressing the cold can to her neck with a small satisfied hum. He shook his head, leaning over to kiss her shoulder, his mouth lingering just long enough to catch the faint hint of coconut on her skin, the leftover trace of tanning oil clinging to her. āI guess if Iām gonna slum it,ā he murmured,Ā
āI donāt mind doing it with you.ā
She tried to play it cool and roll her eyes, tease him back maybe, but the way her smile twitched and softened gave her away. Y/N leaned over towards the cooler, and she properly flipped the lid open, squinting against the brightness as she dug around inside. She asked, already reaching in for another.
āWanna drink?āĀ
āGo onā
She fished out a bottle of something cold for him before glancing down into the ice. Her fingers paused mid-rummage.
āā¦Rafe?ā
He hummed in response, eyes still closed behind his shades.
āWhat is this?ā
He cracked one eye open just as she lifted a tiny, matte-black tin into the air between two fingers like it was radioactive. Water dripped from its sides, and she turned it toward him to read the label.
āThat?ā he said lazily, āThatās caviar.ā
āCaviar?āĀ
āā¦Yeah?āĀ
He said again, this time a little unsure. She sat up fully now, turning the tin over in her hand. āWhy the fuck,ā she said slowly, staring at him like heād grown a second head, āhave you brought caviar⦠to the beach?ā He blinked behind his sunglasses, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.Ā
āI donāt know. Felt like a beach snack.ā
Y/N stared at him in complete disbelief, then burst out laughing.Ā
āYou are so far goneāĀ
She tossed the tin gently onto his chest. It bounced off his sternum and rolled beside him on the towel. His hand reached out to pick the tin which landed face down, āItās goodā he argued, sitting up fully now, brushing sand off his abs.Ā
āWhat would you rather have, a sandwich?ā
āYes!ā
She fired back immediately, eyes wide, āa sandwich! Or like, fruit?! Normal people snacks- God.ā
Rafe shifted beside her, sliding over the towel to sit flush against her side as he grabbed the metal of the tin lid and twisted it, breaking the seal. Y/N watched him with suspicion and she asked slowly, eyes flicking down to the delicate tin in his hands.
āWhat are you doing?ā
āEducating your paletteāĀ
He said as his lips tugged in that cocky little half-smirk and he peeled the lid back with a faint pop. She leaned in slightly, peering at the black, glistening pearls nestled inside.Ā
āā¦Youāre serious?ā
Ā āGive me your hand.ā
He picked up the small white plastic spoon that came wedged in the top of the lid and she hesitated.Ā
āFor what?ā
āJust- shut up and give me your hand.ā
Still side-eyeing him, she extended her palm toward him. He carefully scooped a small mound of caviar onto the back of her hand over the smooth skin by her thumb.
āThere.āĀ
He said then did the same for himself. Y/N looked down at it skeptically like it might start moving.
āWhat does it taste like?ā
He shrugged, āSalty and a little buttery.ā
"You're making it sound good.ā
āIt is good, trust me.ā
He admitted with a grin and she looked at him as he spoke, drawing her eyes away from the delicacy on her hand. The sun had caused a touch of pink at his nose and collarbone as she couldn't help but smile a little knowing that heād be complaining about it later this evening. āOkay well⦠bottoms up-ā she said softly, leaning in slightly, lips brushing the back of her own hand as she tasted it.
Her face twisted immediately.Ā
āOh my God. Itās like- super fishy.ā
Rafe let out a small laugh, āYou didnāt even give it a chanceā
āI did! I gave it like, half a second of a chance!ā
He wiped his own hand clean with a practiced lick, āYouāre a coward.ā
āAnd you,ā she said her finger coming out to jab at his chest, āare out of touch with the common man.ā
āI am a common manā¦?ā
āYeah right⦠maybe in your dreams Mr Cameronā
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun cast a golden haze over the sand, Y/N had settled back again beside Rafe, her skin warm beneath the sunās kiss, his fingers lightly brushing her arm every now and then drawing small circles across her skin. She closed her eyes for a moment, letting the breeze skim over her, it was all good. Until the familiar rumble of an engine reached her ears.
She lifted her sunglasses, squinting toward the dunes just in time to see the beat-up Twinkie rolling into view, causing rifts in the sand. Her heart stuttered in her chest, a tiny flicker of unease blooming as the doors swung open and the Pogues began to spill out their familiar chaos invading the beach.
John B jumped out first, shirt already half-off. Pope and Cleo followed, lugging a cooler between them. Sarah and Kiara trailed after them, beach bags on their shoulders. Then came JJ, dragging two folded beach chairs in one hand and a six-pack in the other. Y/N stayed still, eyes tracking the group as they made their way down toward a spot a little further down the shore, her eyes lingering on one of them longer than the others. Sarah caught her eye and she offered a tentative, almost shy wave. Y/N hesitated before she lifted her hand to return a soft wave and Rafe stirred beside her.
Her gaze shifted again, this time landing on JJ for longer.
He didnāt wave at her, just stood still, eyes already on her like heād spotted her the moment they pulled up. They held each otherās stare for the briefest beat, a second too long to be casual and then his face hardened slightly, gaze sliding off her. He turned away and Y/Nās chest pinched. She blinked, quickly slipping her sunglasses back down over her eyes. Rafe was looking at her now, head turned in her direction. She cleared her throat, lying back against the towel again but her fingers were fidgeting slightly at her side.Ā Rafe noticed immediately.
Heād been watching, not the Pogues, nor the van but her.
The subtle change in her posture, the way her mouth pressed into a faint line. He shifted onto his side, propping his head up on his hand.
āYou okay?ā
Her eyes stayed on the sky. āYeah.ā
It was barely more than a whisper, the single syllable carrying none of the conviction it should. Rafeās brow furrowed. She finally glanced at him, then away just as quick back to the stretch of sand where the Twinkie sat parked. Sarah was already settling down with the others and now JJ had his back turned. āI guess Iām just⦠I donāt know.ā She plucked at a loose thread on her towel, her voice quieter now.Ā
āI thought maybe heād⦠I donāt know. Just look at me? But he canāt even do-ā
She stopped, her throat tightening as the words stuck and a small shake of her head cut the thought short. Admitting the rest out loud, hurt more than she wanted it to, felt like handing someone an axe and asking them to swing. The waves crashed somewhere behind them, slow and steady, filling the silence she left behind. Rafeās gaze lingered on her for a moment longer before he suddenly pushed himself up, brushing the sand off his chest. Then he extended a hand toward her.
āCome on.ā
She frowned, āWhat?ā
āGet in the water, youāll feel better.ā
āI donāt wanna.āĀ
She flopped back against the towel like a stubborn cat refusing to move, throwing her arms over her face. He huffed out at her response.Ā
āCome on, youāve been baking out here for hours.ā
āIām not even hot.ā
āOh, youāre hot alright.ā
A slow, grin spread across his face and she reached her hand out to his calf, shoving him back.Ā
āShut up.ā
Before she could retreat, he placed one foot on either side of her legs and reached down, letting his hand slide deliberately to the very top of her thigh, fingers brushing dangerously close to her bikini bottoms. He feigned a wince.Ā
āAlmost burnt my hand, you need to cool off.ā
That pulled a laugh out of her small but genuine.Ā
āThatās ācause this ass is fire.ā
Rafe rolled his eyes like he was suffering but the corner of his mouth betrayed him with a twitch. In one smooth motion, he gripped her wrists and hauled her upright, ignoring her protests as his arms looped around her waist. She barely had time to register the fact she was on her feet before he was steering her across the sand toward the shoreline. āRafe!ā she yelped, heels digging into the wet sand. āStop! Stop!ā
āOkay if you say soāĀ
He said easily and then without hesitation he dropped her, her feet wobbling in the water which licked around her calves and she fell, straight into the cool sea below her.Ā
āYou dick! Iām gonna get you for that!ā
Her squeal rang out over the sound of the waves and Rafe raised his hands mock-surrender. āOh really? And how exactly are you going to do that?ā But before he could react, she scooped up a handful of water and flung it at him, he yelped as the cool splash hit his chest, then lunged toward her, arms outstretched.
āHey- no fair!āĀ
She shrieked, laughing, dodging to the side and he grinned back and grabbed another handful, sending it through the air. She squealed, spinning away the water dripping down her back. Then she bolted deeper into the water, tiny waves lapping around her knees now.Ā
āCatch me if you can!āĀ
āGet your ass back here!āĀ
He called out to her and she turned her head looking over her shoulder and sticking her tongue out taunting him.
āY/N Iām not playing with you!āĀ
Rafe shouted back, but he couldnāt suppress the amused smile tugging at his lips as he followed after her into the water, his feet kicked up sprays of water as he closed the distance. She laughed harder, running, splashing, weaving in and out of the small waves, her heart racing as the thrill of him following her overtook her.Ā
Nearby, Kiara, Cleo and Sarah were settled on the warm sand; Kiaraās fingers plaiting Sarahās hair, tucking blonde strands behind her ear, while Cleo munched on the homemade veggie crisps Kie had made before they left. Their eyes kept drifting toward the water where John B, Pope, and JJ were prepping their surfboards, the glint of the sun on the waves making the scene almost look like a postcard. Then Kiaraās head tilted slightly, gaze narrowing.Ā
āIs that⦠Rafe and Y/N?āĀ
She asked, a note of surprise in her voice. Sarah followed her line of sight, and for the first time since sheād arrived, she really looked at the two of them. Rafeās arms were around Y/Nās waist, and with a playful tug he pulled her into the water with him. Her squeals of laughter cut through the soft crash of the waves on the shore. Y/N didnāt stop there- she threw herself over his back, arms slinging over his shoulders as he held her close, rubbing his hands up and down her arms and Cleo tilted her head,Ā
āIāve never seen your brother smile yaāknow?ā
Sarahās gaze lingered on them and in her mind she had to agree. Sheād never seen him look so⦠genuinely happy.Ā
Sarah couldnāt help but flick her eyes toward JJ, who was standing up ahead knee-deep in the waves now, surfboard at his side. For a moment, she noticed where his gaze landed, or at least where she thought it did, and she caught something unexpected in his expression. His jaw wasnāt tight or tense like sheād expected; instead there was a softness there, almost like regret⦠or maybe longing? She couldnāt quite place it. But then as quickly as it came he turned his head away, pretending to adjust his board or scan the horizon. Her chest tightened slightly because despite the abrupt movement there was one thing she could be sure of:Ā
He wanted to talk to her.Ā
He just didnāt know how.
For a long moment, she stayed watching him, heart tugged between the warmth of seeing Y/N so happy and the complicated feeling that came with JJās presence.Ā
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The two float in the water aimlessly now letting the waves rock them gently, Rafeās arms are snug around Y/N from behind, keeping her anchored. Her eyes drifted toward the surfboards bobbing in the distance where the Pogues were showing off and she caught sight of JJ trying a tricky maneuver before wiping out in the water now foaming white below him. Rafeās voice broke the comfortable quiet.Ā
āCan you surf?ā
āCan I surf? I taught him how to surf, you know.ā
Y/N smiled softly, turning her head slightly to look at him.Ā Rafe followed her gaze to JJ, and his eyebrows rose,Ā
ā⦠you did?ā
~~~
JJ stomped his way out of the water, throwing the board down angrily and shoving himself down onto the stand with an audible āumphfā sending a small cloud of sand into the air. He huffed again, shoulders tight as he sat there glaring at the water like it had personally wronged him, the waves rolled in lazily completely indifferent to his frustration.
Y/N crouched down beside him unbothered by the sand clinging to her knees, and she brushed a stray line of sand from his shorts, pushing his matted hair from his face, his blue eyes peering up at her grumpily . She fought back a smile at the exaggerated tantrum he was throwing. āHey, cāmonā she said softly, placing her hand gently on his shoulder to calm him.Ā
āYouāre allowed to be bad at something the first few times.ā
He shot her a look, unconvinced. āBut you make it look easy.ā
āThatās cause Iām olderā
She teased lightly, earning the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth. āAnd because I fell about a hundred times before it stopped feeling wobbly.ā He glanced back toward the water, then down at his board lying beside them.
āIt just⦠doesnāt listen to me.ā
She laughed under her breath at that, rising to her feet and planting herself in front of him and holding her hands out to him, JJ huffed out causing some of his hair to fly out of his face, then he shoved his hands into hers, pulling himself up. She placed her hands on his shoulders,
āYouāve got to bend your knees a little more okay? And keep your eyes forward- donāt look down at the board, that's what's making you fall, JJ.ā
āIām trying! Itās stupid!āĀ
He snapped out in a whiny voice, as he glared at the ocean like it had personally betrayed him. āOkay, try this with me, yeah?ā She bent her knees, rocking slightly side to side. āLoose. Not stiff. If you start fighting the board it's obviously gonna fight back.ā JJ mirrored her movement awkwardly, wobbling a bit even on the sand.
āI look stupid.ā
āYou look like someone who's learning,ā she corrected, āBig difference.ā
He looked over to her skeptically and her hand came out once more, softly squeezing his shoulder, āItās called practice Jay. Dāyou really think I got it the first time?āĀ
ā...no.ā
āI promise, youāll get it.ā
Y/N couldnāt help the small, proud smile that tugged at her lips as she watched him hoist the board under his arm and trudge toward the shoreline, muttering, āIf I die, Iām haunting you.ā She followed, nudging his back playfully with her hand. The water lapped at their ankles, cool and foamy and she stepped beside him, guiding him forwards steadily. JJ hesitated just for a second before wading in deeper, jaw set in determination. Y/N watched him,
āOne wave at a time Jay- Iāve got you.ā
~~~
The memory faded as gently as the water rocking them both, slow and rhythmic. Rafeās arms were still snug around her, his body a solid warmth at her back and she let out a soft breath she hadnāt realised sheād been holding.
āI havenāt surfed in a whileā
She admitted quietly and Rafe hummed in response, a thoughtful pause rising between them before he spoke up,
āYou could again.ā
She tilted her head slightly, glancing back at him, āYeah?ā
āYeah,ā he said simply. āWe can get you a board, a good one, not one of those half-assed rentals.ā She smiled at that, but it didnāt quite reach her eyes. Her gaze drifted back to the horizon, to where JJ was paddling back out now, stubborn as ever and the sight tugged at something in her chest.
She could remember saving up for weeks, months really, counting crumpled bills at the end of every shift. The gas station sat just before the bridge that led into Figure Eight, it was her first real job. It was the kind of place people only stopped at because they had to. The place always had her fingers smelling faintly of gasoline no matter how many times she washed them, and it stank of burnt coffee and motor oil, fluorescent lights buzzing overhead irritably.
She would work the late shifts alone behind the counter, pretending not to notice the way men lingered too long and called herĀ sweetheartĀ like it would mean something to her. But she'd put up with it because after each shift, every pay out went into a shoebox under her bed, every spare dollar folded carefully.
She remembered the weight of the board when she finally bought it, the way it nearly knocked JJ off his feet when she handed it over. He was much smaller then, sun-bleached hair bouncing in excitement and eyes lighting up like sheād just handed him the world. She can still recall how he'd slept with it in his room for a week after that, propped against the wall at first and then dragged closer to his bed like it might disappear if he didnāt keep it within armās reach.
The memory seemed distant now, tainted with something aching and old. Regret? No- not regret. Never regret. Just her own understanding of how much of herself sheād given without ever thinking twice, without ever wanting anything in return, because that was what you did when you love someone. Rafeās arms tightened just a fraction, and after a moment of her silence, he spoke softly. āYou okay?ā She nodded automatically,
āMhmm.ā
But he shifted slightly, just enough that she felt him look down at her. āThat wasnāt very convincing.ā She sighed, leaning back into his chest. āWhat if he doesnāt want to talk to me? What if heāā Her voice caught, the thought unfinished. Rafeās hand came up, thumb brushing slow, reassuring circles along her arm. āBaby,ā he said gently,
āThatās your brother.ā
She swallowed.
āDoesnāt matter whatās happened,ā he continued. āDoesnāt matter how angry he is at you or how much time it takes. You're still family.ā He nodded toward the shoreline, where JJ was now sitting on his board atop the water, waiting for the next set of waves to roll closer.
āYou taught him almost everything he knows- you think he'd forget that?ā
She watched JJ for a long moment, āYou should go talk to him,ā Rafe said, not pushing, āYou don't deserve to live like this constantly carrying all this guilt around.ā She turned slightly in his arms then, looking up at him. She whispered and Rafe leant down, pressing a soft kiss to her temple.
āWhat if I mess it up?ā
āThen I'll be right here- I've got you.ā
It was almost ironic- the same words sheād once given her brother now being said to her. She swallowed nodding faintly and her forehead tipped forward until it rested briefly against his collarbone. The water rocked them gently, the ocean indifferent to the quiet shift happening inside her. Rafe squeezed her hand then he huffed a quiet breath, brushing his thumb across her knuckles. āCāmon,ā he murmured, already starting to guide her toward shore.
"Youāre pruning up. Letās get you dry.ā
She let him lead her, fingers still laced with his as they waded back, the sand cool and soft beneath her feet. Just before they reached the beach, she glanced back over her shoulder one last time. JJ was up on his board this time, balanced, cutting clean across a wave, golden light catching in his hair as the water curled around him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun had dipped just enough to soften the harshness of the late afternoon light, and Y/N sat cross-legged on the sand. Her shorts were damp from her still wet bikini bottoms underneath and the t-shirt Rafe had worn was now draping comfortably over her frame, leaving his tanned chest bare. The umbrella was closed and tucked beside their two towels folded neatly which lay on top of the cooler, which was now empty. Rafe dropped down onto the sand beside Y/N, the grains sticking faintly to his skin. āOkay,ā he said, brushing sand from his hands on his dried board shorts,
āweāre all ready.ā
Y/N turned slightly, reaching over and taking his hand in hers. She rested her head on his shoulder, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath her cheek. He glanced down at their intertwined fingers, thumb brushing over the back of her hand and then without thinking, his finger traced delicately over her ring finger. She followed his movements before meeting his eyes instinctively and for a heartbeat they just looked at each other. Then his eyes flickered down to her lips, soft and slightly dry from a whole day out in the sun and water, she could help the way her lips curved into a small, almost shy smile.
She leaned in, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss against him, tasting the faint salt of the sea, it was sweet and unhurried. It was in that moment she realised that the peace she had been chasing her entire life, the quiet she had longed for on restless nights, was sitting right here beside her. She pulled back just enough to rest her forehead lightly against his and she whispered,
āI love you.ā
āLove you moreā
He replied immediately, his voice was nothing but honest and she giggled softly, brushing her nose against his.
āNo- I love you more.ā
āHmmm, thatās not possible Maybank, because I love you most.ā
Her smile wavered for just a moment as the memory of JJās words from months ago flickered in her mindĀ
āYouāre not a Maybank, you know that?ā
Ā āA Maybank would never betray their own blood.ā
Her voice felt quiet as she began to speak, so quiet that she had to clear her throat and start again, āNot a Maybank anymore remember?ā Rafeās eyes softened as they scanned her face, and before he could stop himself, he spoke, the words falling past his lips with no going back,
āWell⦠maybe you could be a Cameron instead?ā
Her breath caught at his question. āWhat?ā she asked, blinking up at him, surprise clawing up her throat. His gaze lowered to her ring finger again and he added steadily,
āWould you⦠in the future⦠ever consider it?ā
Rafe's mouth felt dry as he asked the question, the sand warming them as they sat in a silence, and although Y/N was sitting down she could swear her legs felt weak. Finally, she let out a small breath and met his eyes. āYes,ā she whispered.
āYes I would.ā
A small, satisfied smile broke across his face and he reached forward pulling her closer. Their lips met again soft and intimate, marking a new chapter between them. As Rafe pulled back from the kiss, a teasing glint danced in his eyes. āYou know,ā he murmured his voice low,
āI like the sound of⦠Mrs. Cameron.ā
Y/Nās hand shot up between them, playfully pushing him back just enough to make him grin wider. āRafeā she protested, though her lips quirked in a smile at the thought of that.
Huh- Mrs Cameron.
Who would've thought...
For a moment his gaze flickered past her, scanning the beach behind her and landing on something before snapping back to her face. āWhat?ā she asked tilting her head her curiosity now piqued.
āI think someone wants to talk to you.ā
Rafe replied nodding subtly. Her head turned and there walking slowly with Sarah at his side, was JJ. His eyes found hers immediately and for the first time in months, he didnāt look away. The weight of his gaze made her chest flutter, a mixture of nerves and unspoken conversations settling deep inside her. She looked back at Rafe, biting her lower lip instinctively but his thumb appeared instantly brushing gently across her lip to free it from between her teeth. āHey⦠stop that,ā he murmured softly. āWhat if-ā she began, uncertainty creeping into her voice.
āBaby,ā Rafe cut in his voice firm but gentle, āremember what I said. Whatever happensā¦ā He leaned closer and added quietly, ā...Iāve got you.ā
A small, resolute smile spread across her face as she slowly got to her feet, her arms crossed over her chest, gathering courage whilst the sand shifted beneath her feet as she started walking toward the Pogues. Sarah nudged JJ in encouragement and he immediately began to walk toward Y/N and both parties on each sides of the beach watched in anticipation. The silence stretches between them as they get closer, heavy and fragile. JJ stands a few feet away from her, hands flexing at his sides, shoulders tight in a way sheās seen a hundred times before- when he didnāt know what to do with what he was feeling. The blonde Pogue finally speaks, his voice quieter than sheās ever heard it, stripped of its usual cocky confidence,
āHey.ā
Y/N looks at him for a long moment. Really looks at him. At the familiar lines of his face, the his sun-bleached hair, the little boy she helped raise, now a man standing in front of her. Her heart starts to pound loud in her ears but she forces herself to breathe.
āHi Jay.ā
She replies softly, only to be met by another pause. The beach seems to hush around them, the loud crash of the waves rolling in and out quiet now. If Y/N closed her eyes she could match up the rise and fall of the water to the pace of her heartbeat. Somewhere behind them, Sarah and Rafe watch silently giving them space, but eager to hear what's being said. JJ shifts his weight, eyes dropping to the sand before his hand comes up to his hair, pushing it out of his face and lifting his gaze back to her. His jaw tightens, like heās bracing himself. āI⦠I didnāt know,ā he says, the words careful, deliberate.
āAbout everything. I didnāt know it was that bad for you.ā
Something in her chest aches at his words and her expression softens. She nods slowly, swallowing past the lump in her throat. āYeah,ā she murmured,
āI didnāt want you to know...I didnāt want you to look at me like that.ā
His eyes flicker over her face, guilt flashing across his own. He opens his mouth like heās about to defend himself but the fight drains out of him before it can even get a syllable past his lips. He clears his throat, dragging a hand down his face. āIām sorry, Y/N. I just-ā His voice wobbles, his breath hitching unexpectedly. She sees the glassiness in his eyes, the way heās blinking too fast, trying to hold it together.
āIām so sorry, I-ā
The words collapse into a broken breath and then heās crying. Not loud and performative, but ugly uncontrollable sobs he clearly doesnāt know how to stop. He ducks his head, hands angrily wiping at his cheeks as his shoulders shake.
Her own eyes burn instantly at the sight.
āHey,ā she says, stepping forward without thinking.
āHey, itās okay- Itās okay.ā
She pulls the boy into her, arms wrapping around him as naturally as breathing and JJ folds into her like heās been waiting for permission, bending down and tucking his face into the crook of her neck. His arms clamp around her tightly, as though afraid sheāll disappear if he lets go. She runs her hand through his hair, strands crusted by the salt water he'd spent all day in. Her fingers smooth it back the way she used to when he was smaller, when his scraped knees and bad dreams were the worst of his problems and she as always was there to help him. Her other hand rubs slow circles into his back, āItās okay, baby,ā she whispers,
āI know, I know youāre sorry-ā
ā-I love you so muchā
He chokes out and his sobs shake against her shoulder, her skin there now damp from his tears, āYouāre my sister⦠and I treated you like shit and Iāā His voice breaks again, the words dissolving into another breathless cry.
āI shouldāve protected you. I shouldāve been there.ā
She shushes him gently, pressing her cheek to his hair. āI know,ā she murmurs, over and over. āI don't blame you, itās okay.ā
A tear slips free then, tracing a path shakily down her cheek. She doesnāt bother wiping it away. Sheās missed him so much it hurts- missed the weight of him leaning into her, missed being his safe place. This is her baby brother. The boy she fed, fought for, worried about over and over again. The thought that she mightāve lost him forever had terrified her more than anything. āIāve missed you so much, Jayj,ā she whispers, her voice barely there.
āSo much.ā
JJ clings to her, holding on like sheās an anchor and after a long moment, he pulls back just enough to look at her, his face blotchy and wet, eyes red and irritated. āIām not letting you go again,ā he says hoarsely,
āEver.ā
She smiles through her tears and pulls him back into her, holding him just as tight. JJ stays tucked into her for a second longer, then exhales against her shoulder, voice muffled but calmer now.
āā¦You still smell like sunscreen.ā
She lets out a quiet laugh, pulling back just enough to look at him. āYeah? Well, Iād rather smell like sunscreen than burn.ā He squints at her, a fake offended look flashing across his face. āWhatāsĀ thatĀ supposed to mean?ā She doesnāt even hesitate as she sends him a side eye, only for JJ to scoff, giving her shoulder a light shove.
āI donāt burn.ā
āYeah, right. Your back says something else.ā
She laughs, nudging him right back. āHey!ā he protests, immediately grinning despite himself. āThat only happened one time.ā
āIt peeled,ā she reminds him sweetly, āForĀ weeks.ā
He groans at her and sheās still laughing, the sound warm and cutting clean through the heaviness from moments ago. JJ shakes his head, but heās smiling too. āI missed you,ā he mutters, quieter, softer. She bumps her shoulder against his. āYeah,ā she says gently.
āMe too.ā
āI love you, Y/N,ā he says his voice holding steady despite the rasp still clinging to it. āNo matter what happens⦠Iāll always love you. Youāre my sister... Youāre my family.ā
Her throat tightens instantly. She nods, lips pressed together as her eyes sting, fighting to hold it together. One hand comes up automatically, fingers smoothing through the messed-up hair near his face, fixing it the way sheās done a thousand times before.
āI love you too, J,ā
āWeāre the Maybanks, right?ā
She nods, her lips pressing into each other, emotion flickering across her face as she breathes in his words like a lifeline.
They both donāt notice Rafe at first.
Heād started getting uneasy when he realised how long theyād been talking, a hand reaching up to run over his buzzcut. He's not dumb- he can tell that JJ had been apologising- but their interaction put him on edge either way. He slowed as he reached them, stopping not far behind Y/N. JJās eyes flickered over her shoulder catching sight of him and Y/N turned slightly as Rafeās hand settles at her waist, protective.
āHeyā
JJ says, casual but not unkind. He could sense Rafe's resentment, he's not surprise, especially after what he'd heard him say to his sister. Rafe gives him a thin-lipped smile, not hostile but then again, not friendly. Y/N looks between them, heart thudding, aware that this- 'this'- is going to take time.
JJ glances between them, āSo,ā he says, nodding toward Rafe, āuhā¦ā he starts but then stops, letting out a huff he tries again,
āRafe-ā
āJJ, if youāre gonna-ā Y/N cuts in her nerves flaring, āNo, no,ā he cuts her off quickly.
āNot like that. I just- Sarah told me about everything. What you did for her.ā
Thereās a beat of silence. The ocean hums behind them, waves rolling in and out like theyāre giving them space. āI, uhā¦ā JJ swallows. āYeah.ā Rafe doesnāt say anything at first, his hand tightens just slightly at Y/Nās waist but he doesnāt look away from JJ, instead he sends him a small nod.
āMy sister, huh?ā
āJJ-ā
Y/N starts, already bracing but he lifts his hands quickly.
āIām joking- Iām joking.ā
She lets out a small breath, a smile breaking through. Rafe clears his throat. āSo⦠youāve, uhāā He gestures vaguely between her and JJ.
āSorted things out?ā
āYeah.ā she says quietly punctured with a soft smile. Rafe gives a short nod, jaw still a little tight, but he accepts it. JJ shifts his weight, suddenly a bit awkward. āLook man,ā He rubs the back of his neck.
āI just wanted to say thanks. For⦠you know.ā
āDonāt thank meā
Rafe started to shake his head immediately, āYou donāt need to.ā JJ nods once, a sense of mutual understanding passing between them without another word. They hold each otherās gaze for a beat, two stubborn and complicated guys standing on opposite sides of the same subject, however something unspoken settles between them.
A truce, probably not yet.
But an agreement?
Maybe....
Because at the end of the day they both love her.
Y/N watched them standing there, awkward and tense but trying. She knows it wonāt be easy, she's not as foolish as she used to be, but standing here between the two people who love her most in the world, she realises something else too.
Good things take time and sheās willing to give it.
But on a side note- I've had so many sweet messages from you guys recently so I thought it's about time I explain to you guys how I've kind of lost my motivation to write for rafe (I don't really know how to explain it.) I haven't really felt like writing for him for a while now so I didn't want to be posting fics that felt like a chore to write or felt forceful.
There's loads of other characters I'd love to write for and I've thought about posting somethings but I don't know if any of you guys would read them...
I know a lot of y'all are probably reading this and thinking - "da fuq is she on about"- but I hope you can understand where I'm coming from :) Then again maybe when the next obx season comes out, or I receive some totally mind-blowing ask or I see some jaw dropping sexy edit I'll feel like writing for him again- guess we'll have to wait and see!
I hope you're all doing amazingly well and enjoying autumn ššš
The party pulses, the music heavy with the bass thrumming in everyone's eardrums and the air smelling like weed, sweat and spilled liquor. You were perched on Rafeās lap, his hands warm on your thighs, the heat of his body prominent against yours. You wereĀ drunkĀ but it was the good kind of drunk, the kind that makes you giggle at nothing, the kind that makes you feelĀ light and carefree.
Rafe had beenĀ sweet all night,Ā pressing his lips to your temple, murmuring against your skin, fingers kneading gently at the soft flesh of your thigh which was peeking out from under your mini skirt. His voice was low andĀ possessive in the way that had always made your stomach flip. His murmurs had drawn smile after smile from your lips,
āYou look pretty tonightā
"Look at my girl"
"You're all mine right baby?"
His friends were nearby, Kelce and Topper passing a joint back and forth their laughter fading into the party, but Rafe barely paid them any attention.
His focus solely on you.Ā
Yet as much as you'd like to think his attention would only be on you the whole night,Ā eventually his focus shifts. You'd barely noticed at first, too caught up in the warmth of him but when your eyes drift over to the guy that had slipped up besides the couch where you're both sat, the sight of Rafe slipping something into the palm the other guyās hand fills your vision.Ā
A small baggie in exchange for cash.Ā
A casual exchange one would say.
When his attention turns back to you, there's anotherĀ small baggie in his grip filled with the same white substance. There's that glint in his eyes- the one that recently has started to become too familiar.
āYou want some princess?ā
His voice wasĀ silky and coaxing,Ā wrapping around your senses like a trap you donāt see until you're was already in it. You frown ever so slightly, the buzz from previous drinks starting to make everythingĀ slow and hazy. You lick your lips trying to push back the feeling of your now incredibly dry mouth , shaking your head.
āNo... Iām okay.ā
You try to smile,Ā try to keep things lightĀ but Rafeās fingers curl ever so tighter around your thigh, creeping upward.Ā
He pulls back and reaches into his pocket, pulling out aĀ rolled-up billĀ before grabbing his phone, flipping it over so the smooth flat surface of the small apple logo faces up. With practiced ease, he taps aĀ small, neat lineĀ of coke onto it, the powder settling into aĀ perfect streak of whiteĀ under the dim glow of the lights.
YouĀ swallow hard.
The partyĀ had now faded into the background,Ā just a blur of noise and laughter and without a second of hesitation he lifts the phone up to his nose.
Effortless.
Rafe's jaw clenches, nostrils flaring slightly as he sits back, his head tipping against the couch.Ā For a second he just breathes. His fingers flexing against your thigh, his chest rising and falling with slow, steady inhales.
Then his eyesĀ snap open.
Pupils blown
You felt the shift immediately- the way hisĀ pupils had swallowed up the blue of his irises,Ā the way his hand slides back up your leg, this time withĀ less restraint, pushing your skirt further up. āCome on,ā he presses his voice low while he leans closer to you his lips graze the shell of your ear, breath warm against your skin.Ā
āJust a little- it'll make the night better. Sāgonna make everything more fun.ā
He draws back before he kisses your cheek, then lower his lipsĀ ghosting over your jaw, your throat, his free hand now smoothing over your waist. Gripping, pulling, keeping you locked into him. You let him drag his lips across you, your own parting slightly as his tongue brushes against your bottom lip, but the second you feel his hand shift- the baggie now pressing against your thigh- you stiffened.
āDonāt be such a buzzkillā
His gripĀ tightens,Ā fingersĀ digging into your skin. You could feel it now, theĀ storm rolling in between the both of you,Ā the way his voice dips lower, the way his body tenses, his patience clearly thinning.
āJust one hit.ā He nudges the bag out towards you again.Ā
āWhatās it gonna hurt?ā
Your head feelsĀ fuzzy from the sudden pressure he's putting you under, but also from the copious amounts of alcohol you'd drank over the night. The room was spinning slightly but still you shook your head again.
āI donāt want any mākay...?ā
Silence.
His jaw clenches and the warmth he once held had now slipped away- replaced with a cold gaze.Ā He leans back against the couch, pulling you with him unexpectedly, his hand sliding from your waist to your wrist,Ā gripping it tight, yanking you forward. You let out a small gasp as forces you onto his lap to face him fully, knees resting on either side of his thighs. His expression was unreadable, his hands rough and much colder than before.
āStop beinā so fuckinā difficult.ā
His voice is so sharp it makes your pulseĀ jump, your breath catching as Rafe leans in, his nose brushing against yours his voice a whisper,
āThink youāre better than me, huh?ā
Your lip part but before you could speak-
His hand shoots up.
Fingers curlĀ hardĀ around your face,Ā squeezing your cheeks together and forcing your lips to part open. Rafeās eyesĀ burn straight into yours,Ā his smirk curling into something meaner as his gripĀ tightens, his thumb pressing against the hinge of your jaw just enough to make you wince. āThat it?ā He taunts,
āYou think youāreĀ better than meĀ just ācause you donāt do shit like this?ā He lets out a bitter chuckle. āThat why youāre always so fuckinā difficult, huh? Actinā like youāre so clean, so good, so-ā
His gripĀ tightens again,Ā making you gasp, your hand coming up to wrap around his wrist in a petty attempt to loosen his iron claw.
ā-so much fucking better than me?ā
āRafe-ā
Before you can react, before you can even try toĀ pull away,Ā Rafe swiftly grabs the smallĀ baggie laying on the couch next to him and pulls it open, dipping his fingers into theĀ coke.
Without hesitation he rubs the powder onto your gums.
Your breath'sĀ caught in your throat, your whole bodyĀ frozen in a sick game of fight or flight.
TheĀ sharp, bitter tasteĀ spreads across your mouth, the sting making your eyes water. You try to move, to push at his chest with weak fists butĀ his grip on your jaw doesnāt loosen- not until he's sure youādĀ taken it.
Then finally,Ā he lets go.
You whimper, hand flying up to your mouth panicked, heart pounding into your ribs, visionĀ blurring at the edges. Rafe justĀ leans backĀ his eyes heavy-lidded,Ā pleased. He lifts his hand, brushing a thumb over your cheek softly as he murmurs, his voiceĀ praising,
āThere you goā
Your visions blurred but you can tell if it's from your tears or the drugs, your stomach'sĀ sinking, twisting- plummeting even.
āIām just looking out for you, baby. Don't want people to say you're a prude, hmm?ā
ā§ Cowboy!Rafe who's just left the OBX for a fresh start, aimlessly traveling around the south in a beat up truck he's borrowed from Barry- when he bumps into a small town where he meets Y/N's daddy, who offers him a place to stay in return for some help. One thing leads to another and Rafe's been hired as a ranch hand to help around on the family acres.
ā§ Cowboy!Rafe who isn't even a cowboy- he's not got a clue about a single thing on the ranch, Y/N's father has to lead him through everything, but he's a fast learner and doesn't hesitate to put the work in so he picks everything up straight away. Y/N also takes the reins while heās getting the hang of ranch life- her old man probably says something like, āYou stick with my girl and sheāll show you exactly how itās done.ā
ā§ Farmers-Daughter!Reader is beloved by the whole town. She always remembers everyone's birthdays, bakes the sweetest treats for church charity events without being asked and can calm a crying babyĀ andĀ a spooked horse with the same gentle tone. Everyone knows sheās her daddyās pride and joy of course.
ā§ Farmers-Daughter!Reader who is always wearing her boots- which are a little scuffed up and have small pink bows tied to the loops at the top, it's like they're her signature trademark.
ā§ Cowboy!Rafe who keeps finding excuses to be near her. Asking questions he doesnātĀ reallyĀ need the answers to, leaning on the fence while sheās training the horses on the ranch, his arms crossed a grin on his face saying things like, āDidnāt know angels wore boots with pink bows,ā just to rile her up- she totally brushes him off but can't stop the pink hue from sneaking onto her cheeks.
ā§ Farmers-Daughter!Reader who is still nursing the quiet heartbreak of being left at the altar by her high school sweetheart- the golden boy of the town everyone thought sheād marry. He called off the wedding the morning of, leaving her in her dress waiting at the door. Now, sheās cautious with her heart- until now- Rafeās came along and she quickly warms up to him much faster than she was expecting.
ā§ Cowboy!Rafe calls Y/N's daddyĀ 'Sir' trying to be that Southern gentleman like everyone else in the town. Y/Nās dad, would definitely see something in Rafe- recognising that he needs a little guidance and someone to show him that not all men are like the one he came from. However her dad is protective as hell after what happened to his baby girl, so while he eventually starts calling Rafe "son," heās also keeping a close eye on his intentions with Y/N. If he evenĀ thinksĀ Rafeās stepping out of line he'll make sure his daughter knows,āI donāt care how many fences he fixes, he lays a finger on you, heās gone.ā
ā§ Farmers-Daughter!Reader who finds it strange getting used to Rafe taking up the spare room in their home at first, cause it's only ever just been her and her daddy and the memory of her momma who lays buried under the large oak tree on the hill behind their home. However when she sees how much help he is around the Ranch and how he takes the pressure off her father's shoulders, she doesn't mind him joining them for breakfast and dinners as much.
ā§ Farmers-Daughter!Reader who is soft-spoken, but not spineless.Ā She knows how to hold her tongue especially around the older folk in town but if someone disrespects someone she cares about? She won't hold back, but she'll do it politely of course.
ā§ Farmers-Daughter!Reader who has to teach Rafe how to ride a horse, dressed in her usual getup; tight jeans, a little washed out red knotted button-up. She's tugging the girth of the saddle a little tighter looking over to Rafe, āCāmon now, Bluebell here is a sweetheart. She only bucks when youĀ deserveĀ itā and he'd mutter back, āIām feelinā a little targeted,ā then she pats the saddle and looks up at him with a smirk. āUp you go, cowboy.ā Since then that nickname sticks.
ā§ Farmers-Daughter!Reader who gets called 'Pumpkin' by her daddy cause when her momma was pregnant with her that was what she was craving all the time. But Rafe? He calls her "Peaches" cause one of the first times theyād really talked to each other was when she was picking peaches off of one of the ranchās peach tree. Heād been walking the edge of the fence line checking for any broken wooden stumps, flannel half-unbuttoned from the heat when he heard her humming and there she was, balanced delicately, knife in one hand, a bucket half-full hanging from the ladder she was one, āHey there, cowboy,āĀ sheād said with a little grin, slicing open a peach with a practiced twist of the blade. āYou ever tasted somethinā right off the tree?ā and when he bites into the fruit, the juice dribbling down his fingers he said, "almost as sweet as you... peaches"
