7.26.20, DC
DC protests have continued for 2 months nonstop against police violence and for Black Lives. Despite having a population greater than Vermont or Wyoming, DC’s statehood remains controversial among Republicans who can’t keep control of the government without multiple forms of voter suppresion.
Same in Portland and Seattle
and NYC.
And Atlanta
Protests have continued in Chicago and Louisville too, but with less media coverage since they’re not as white as Portland and national media has a NY bias
And Minneapolis!

everyone in the notes:
SHARE, we need to raise awareness about this!
please pay attention to what is currently happening in serbia. if this was in the us, it would be all over the internet, but obviously, with our country being so small and insignificant (only known for war crimes LMAO), this kind of information is not being spread around. we're basically living in a dictatorship and a police state and every piece of media is owned by our president, so there is basically no truthful media coverage for us on what is happening. spread the news.
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SERBIA?
TL;DR: we’re living under a dictatorship. people are currently protesting the deaths caused by decisions the government made while prioritising the election over human lives. mainstream news are making it seem like the protesters are hooligans who are protesting new safety measures and not the dictatorship they refuse to even acknowledge.
THE LEAD-UP
here’s a brief list of things that caused the people to protest:
the elections have been rigged since the moment aleksandar vučić became president. not even in a relatively subtle way like in the usa (gerrymandering), but by literally replacing sacks of voting papers with ones that are voting for sns (srpska narodna stranka, the president’s party)
we were lied to about when the first covid-19 case appeared in serbia. the government withheld information from us because it benefited them.
also, about a week before the lockdown, the president made fun of the virus, encouraging people to “go shop in milano if they want”. when the situation got serious, he shifted the blame to the people.
hospitals all around the country were and still are severely underfunded. they’re reusing masks, don’t have enough space for all the patients, and the tests we’re still given aren’t accurate.
the lockdown was lifted prematurely because of the parliamentary elections. if you look up “serbia covid19 cases” on google, you’ll see that the second wave started around june 21st, which is when the election was.
right after the election was over, the government set extreme safety measures, including: police enforced lockdown fri-sun, an attempt to force all belgrade students out of their dorms during exam season, etc.
THE PROTESTS
last night (july 7th), there was a huge unorganized protest outside of the belgrade parliament building.
as expected, the police turned it into a violent protest. they used tear gas 26 times, attacked people who weren’t even protesting, and used unnecessary force against those who were. a man was choked the same way george floyd was.
only n1 (cnn’s channel) actually informed people that this was happening, and their website was down all night last night. every other network was airing their usual program, since they’re controlled by the government.
the people got into the parliament building a few times, but were ultimately forced out violently by the police.
there were protests in other cities too, but they weren’t as large.
rts (the most watched channel in the country) is putting all the blame on the protesters and making it seem as if they’re protesting the new safety measures, and not the dictatorship of aleksandar vučić.
every other international news source is pretty much doing the same.
WHAT NOW?
the protests will continue. in case they’re successful, there will be another election, one that won’t put only sns members in the parliament (they make up more than 70% as of right now).
in case they’re not successful, we’ll be expecting a change of the constitution that will state that there’s no limit to how many terms a president can have. we’ll live under complete dictatorship.
the most you, outside of serbia, can do is share correct information and spread awareness about what’s happening.
reblog and share this post, share other posts (on instagram especially) made by serbian people, call out false information when you see it.

Here’s the whole video. It’s called “Don’t Be A Sucker” and it’s 17 minutes long.
don’t just scroll past this actually watch it, it’s only 2 minutes long. If you re-recorded this today word for word with modern actors and places, it wouldn’t even look out of place as a PSA
at some point when i’m less out of it i’m gonna make a longer post about how eastern european farm workers are mysteriously omitted from talks about essential workers during the pandemic despite propping up western europe’s food industry literally at the cost of their lives. like i wanna be super crystal clear here: if you’ve eaten fresh produce or meat products in, or imported from, germany, uk, the netherlands, italy or spain this year (maybe thinking you’re doing your part in supporting the economy by buying locally even) - eastern europeans have gotten sick and died so you could do that. yet somehow, for some reason, they are not essential workers.
‘but this kind of thing doesn’t make it to the news! how could i have known about it?’ fine. ok. here’s what 15 minutes of googling will get you:
‘forced to sign contracts in german, dutch, or other languages they don’t read, [workers] often find out upon arrival that their working hours are longer, their salaries much smaller than promised and their living conditions abysmal, with housing and living with little protection against covid-19’
romanian farm worker nicolae bahan got infected with covid-19 while working on an asparagus farm in germany. according to several fellow workers the farm owners refused to provide healthcare and a space to safely quarantine and instead locked him inside a container out in the field where he died shortly.
another romanian worker on the same farm talks about how until the end of march they were not provided soap in the bathrooms and risked having their hours cut if they stopped to have a drink of water while out in the field.
germany flies in thousands of romanian workers at the height of the pandemic. farm owners claim they can’t hire domestically because ‘most germans are not used to working stooped in the fields for hours on end. they complain about backache. romanians and poles are stronger and they work weekends and public holidays.’
despite a severe workforce shortage many brits refuse to take on farm work, citing contract length, location and family duties. meanwhile romanians (who are regularly underpaid and abused by employees) are now lauded as ‘key skilled workers’ during the shortage (but no mention is made of adjusting their salaries to reflect either their skill or the fact that they are in high demand)
over 1500 east european workers at german meat processing plant tönnies tested positive for covid-19.
former romanian employee at tönnies talks about poor working conditions and workplace abuse. employees were forced to work overtime without pay and told not to take sick leave.
romanian and bulgarian workers infected with covid-19 while working in other german meat processing plants. employers pay by the hour and don’t check working conditions.
bulgarian workers in italy have rocks thrown at them by angry crowd while protesting the lockdown that will likely cost them their jobs.
if you didn’t know before, you know now. and if you can be outraged at injustices and abuse happening on another continent you can be outraged at injustices and abuse happening the next town over that make it possible for you to get your reasonably priced five-a-day. not just this year, in the middle of a pandemic, but for well over a decade.

10 LGBT+ classic rock stars that aren't Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, or Elton John
Pete Townshend
Pete is best known as the tall, short tempered energetic guitarist and writer of almost all of the songs by The Who. He was the member who came up with their trademark move of smashing the instruments at the end of each show, and became a voice for youth at the time with one of their many hits 'Talkin 'Bout My Generation.' He came out in his memoir as well as an interview in 1989, saying he was bisexual, and also said he identified as both a woman and a man, saying: "I know how if feels to be a woman because I am a woman, and I won't be classified as just a man."
Debbie Harry
Lead singer and writer for the band Blondie, she's a bisexual woman well known for her colourful taste in fashion and unmistakable voice. Her musical career started out in the punk genre but she is best known for writing and singing some of the most popular new wave songs including Heart of Glass, Call Me, and One Way or Another.
Janis Joplin
Often cited as the face of American blues, folk, soul and rock, Janis Joplin is WLW and had numerous relationships with men and women in her life. She was famed for her distinctive husky voice and powerful and captivating stage presence that left audiences stunned.
Dave Davies
The guitarist in 60s British invasion group The Kinks revealed he was bisexual in his autobiography in 1997. The more outgoing of the Davies brothers in the band, of which he had a difficult and fiery relationship with, Dave also experimented with makeup and women's clothing in the 60s and 70s. Many people claim his riffs were the very earliest beginnings of heavy metal.
Sir Ray Davies
Ray Davies wrote and sung most of The Kink's songs, including their most successful song Lola, which is about a transgender woman. Although quieter and more laid back than his brother, he does not have a quiet tongue either. His endless brotherly quarrels with Dave continue to this day, although they live next door to one another. He is MLM.
Kim Deal
As well as playing Bass for the late 80s indie rock band The Pixies and fronting the 90s band The Breeders, Kim Deal has studied and worked in cellular biology. She has said that she is asexual and also identifies as a feminist. Kim Deal has a unique philosophy in recording music, as she uses no modern means of production such as digital recording, computers, and auto tuning.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Recognised as the inventor of rock and roll, Tharpe was a pioneer for combining blues and gospel to create a unique sound partnered with her electric guitar as early as the late 30s. She is WLW. Her relationship with Marie Knight became a controversial topic when it was discovered by the public, especially from her religious background.
Rob Halford
Singer and songwriter of the popular heavy metal band Judas Priest, Rob was initially uneasy about coming out as gay due to heavy metal's often homophobic following, but was surprised when he was overwhelmingly supported. He now calls himself the 'stately homo of heavy metal' and speaks openly about the ongoing struggles that LGBT+ people face.
Marc Bolan
In 1971, a tiny 5"4 Marc Boland performed in his band T-Rex on Top Of The Pops wearing glitter under his eyes. This is widely recognised as the starting point of the glam rock movement. He had relationships with men and women in his life, and came out as bisexual in 1975. He was Jewish and he became a style icon of the 70s for his corkscrew hair, colourful fashion and whimsical happy-go-lucky attitude.
Lou Reed
Lou Reed's infamously dry humour and deadpan voice set him apart from other rock stars of his time. As a child his parents put him in a mental hospital and he was given electric shock therapy to try and 'cure' his interest in men. He grew in popularity in the 60s as The Velvet Underground's lead singer and guitarist and went on to have a successful solo career, where he frequently wrote and sung about LGBT people. Reed is MLM and also Jewish!
Happy Pride Month! Don't forget that the founder of Pride is a bisexual woman, Brenda Howard aka Mother of Pride, who organized the first pride parade. Don't forget that two of the most key figures in LGBT liberation were Marsha P Johnson, a black trans woman, and Sylvia Rivera, a puerto rican trans bi woman. Don't forget that the person to start the fight against the police at stonewall was Stormé DeLarverie, a butch and gnc biracial lesbian.
