Rebuilding Community on the (fujo)Web — Part 1
It's (finally) time! A year after my CitrusCon24 talk & 10 days before my next, Part 1 of my "Rebuilding Community" series is on my blog.
This part explores why many indie social projects are caught in a "Downward Spiral" of disillusionment and burnout.
Independent online software is caught in a downward spiral of burnout and disillusionment. Can we stop it?
What's the "Downward Spiral"?
It's the vicious cycle where project runner burnout, user disillusionment, and impossible expectations feed each other. This makes it harder for the next project to get off the ground, and breeds resentment even within aligned communities. On… and on… and on…
I also look at the common "solutions" we desperately want to believe would work, but that are anything but straightforward:
Reducing scope (doing less)
Raising more funds
Relying on volunteers
Featuring: one of my favorite charts 👇 as they say, "ouch"
In the next part, we'll explore THE core issue we must fix, one that (once you see it) explains so much of… everything: our relationship to power.
You can watch the full original talk on YouTube, or follow along as I post the rest in the next days!
See you soon at @citruscon for my new talk (and spiritual successor): "Working Together in a Dying World"!
In the meantime, if this presentation convinced you I know what I'm doing (I do), support my work to fix this whole mess on Patreon

propaganda:
Here's why YOU should vote for STARSHIV (Courtney Whitmore/Cindy Burman)!!!!
Story-wise, Courtney and Cindy are perfect foils. In case you didn't know:
"In any narrative, a foil is a character who contrasts with another character, typically, a character who contrasts with the protagonist, in order to better highlight or differentiate certain qualities of the protagonist. A foil to the protagonist may also be the antagonist of the plot." [from Wikipedia]
So what makes Courtney and Cindy foils? I'm so glad you asked!
Stars and STRIPE #0 is the comic that introduces us to Courtney. She is the new Star-Spangled Kid, and will go on to become Stargirl! Courtney is brash, loud, and unapologetic. She is a new hero and a teenage girl but she isn't a sidekick—in fact, her stepfather Pat Dugan is her sidekick instead. Years ago, Pat was Stripesy, the original Star-Spangled Kid's sidekick! When Courtney stubbornly became a hero, he developed a robotic suit of armor to help her and became STRIPE.
Throughout her comics, we get to see Courtney's development from an immature kid who made a stupid decision out of anger and became a hero by accident to an immature kid wanting to help people and learning to love the people in her life!
On the other hand, Cindy seems to stagnate. It's heavily implied that she is only a villain for her father's approval, but when he dies, she is blinded by a desire for revenge. Could things have gone differently for her?
Courtney puts on the suit and becomes the Star-Spangled Kid because she wants to prove something to her step-dad.
Meanwhile, Cindy is a villain because she is looking for her father's approval and following in his footsteps.
In civilian environments (school), Courtney is quick to step in to defend other people according to her ideals, even before becoming a hero. Cindy immediately feels threatened by this—her worldview (probably affected by her father's abuse) is all about control and order! They start clashing right away, even before they know each other as the Star-Spangled Kid and Shiv.
A lot of both Courtney and Cindy's stories revolve around their fathers.
In Stars and STRIPE #14, Courtney's birth father visits her, only for her to realize that he doesn't truly care. Instead she spends time with her family and Pat, who she calls "dad" for the first time.
In JSA #81, Courtney's biological father dies. Courtney struggles with feeling like a bad daughter, while Pat feels like a bad father, and talking about it strengthens their relationship.
Meanwhile, through all of Stars and STRIPE, Cindy considers herself a bad daughter and believes that through going along with her father's plans and enduring his abuse, she will earn his love and become a good daughter.
When her father dies, Cindy believes she failed him and joins the Injustice Society at Johnny Sorrow's prompting to get revenge on Courtney. Arguably, Johnny Sorrow fills the role in Cindy's life that her father had originally filled (a motivator to be a villain, someone to drive her).
The two of them are like two sides of the same coin.
And then there's just the dyke-y tension they have going on in general. Like, constantly thinking about the girl who ruined your life in high school? Reminds me a lot of your average lesbian situationship. Just with more killing and hero/villain morality thrown in. And they're always bantering too.
LIKE Courtney has everything Cindy has ever wanted and she ruins her life so Cindy dedicates her life to getting revenge????? THE TOXIC YURI.
PLEASE VOTE STARSHIV. PLEASE. THEY DESERVE IT!!! PLEASE. PLEASE.

propaganda:
the thing abt duke thomas is that he is a genius truly gifted kid who had a promising albeit average future ahead of him until tragedy struck and took his parents from him. then all the energy he has diverts and he blocks everything else out and dedicates himself to finding them and also being a huge problem for anyone who'd try to obscure that.
like #1 most underrated thing abt his character is that he is, by definition, a "retired crash out". after age 14 he had no friends, shit grades, was getting into fights so often he was being kicked out of schools AND foster homes. it truly was self made vigilatism and the power of friendship that saved him from tunnel-visioning into an early grave.
ALL THIS TO SAY my favorite thing abt duke thomas pre batman and the signal (hell even during the comic) is how much of an unapologetic asshole he is to everyone indiscriminately in a bad way. He was kind but lil bro was NOT nice. he was selfish and a dickhead even to ppl who cared and were really trying to help him. I really like to think that him getting past that wasn't dc neutering him but the active choice to get better after he finally found a solid support system. that being said, he most definitely code switches and has to CONSISTENTLY hold back from poppin bitches in they mouthes bcs hes past that! he's in his healing arc! <as he'd say.

[Important] Catbox Needs Your Help
Heyooo. It hasn't been too long since the last blog post, but this one's going to be a lot more important... and quite a bit longer.
tl;dr - Patreon deleted my page, refused to elaborate, and Catbox is now short $1,300~ in reoccurring income to pay the bill. Support Catbox Here
What Happened
In the early morning of May 20th, I received two email notifications from Patreon and Ko-fi, informing me that both of my accounts were suspended for "material that falls outside the bounds of [their] Community Guidelines" and "a violation of [their]Terms Of Service or Content Guidelines", respectively.
Naturally, after submitting appeals to both of them, and waiting 24 hours, I received two different results, both with unsatisfying amounts of answers:
Okay, cool, so Patreon is telling me to go fuck myself, and Ko-fi is at least willing to play ball. I responded to Ko-Fi with a bit more in depth of the systems Catbox uses to monitor uploads for malicious content, and they reinstated my Ko-fi account on Thursday, May 22nd.
Unfortunately, there is only $20 of monthly support coming through Ko-fi. Patreon was Catbox's primary source of income, at around $1,300 per month. I have not updated Catbox's cost breakdown since 2022, and there have been slight changes. Below is the new breakdown, including agreements I have with other services that provide some small funding towards Catbox:
COSTS
Datacenter Colocation: $1,528/month
Upgrades/Hardware Maintenance: $100/month
Offsite Storage: $200/month
Cloud Server Providers: $40/month
Administrative Costs: $60/month
INCOME
Hardware Sharing Contracts: $440/month
Ko-fi: $20/month
One-time support (incl. merch) (avg last 6 months): $80/mo
For those not keeping track, that means without Patreon, Catbox is running at a deficit of about $1,388/month. Hardware Sharing Contracts are typically deducted from the Datacenter Colo cost, which is why it has always appeared lower on the breakdowns.
I've received many emails over the years regarding the cost of datacenter colocation, including things like "why is it so high", "why don't use you [insert cloud provider here]". The reason I colocate my own hardware is for multiple reasons, including the reason for this post. I can manage my own hardware (I'm actually smart sometimes!), upgrade it with 1-off costs (instead of needing to change plans, increasing monthly costs, etc), purchase new hardware when needed, and plan accordingly. I also don't have to worry about getting my service suspended by providers like Cloudflare or other shitty dedicated server providers who balk at the first abuse report. I have been colocating Catbox's hardware in a full size cabinet in downtown LA for the last 7 years. A majority of that time has been on dedicated 10gbps service, and running at full power. To both host 130+ TB of data, and push 1 petabyte of traffic per month on any cloud provider would be, quite frankly, impossible.
What Happens Now
That being said, I have finished the replacement to Patreon - I'm cutting out the middlemen, and now you can support Catbox monthly, directly! As well as get some new, better bonuses than what was previously offered on Patreon!
Supporting Catbox Directly
You can now visit the Catbox Store and find 3 options for supporting Catbox directly. Each support tier has different bonuses for support, stacking upon the previous.
Tier 1: Add 2 "QTs" to the image rotation (the images in the bottom right corner of the screen).
Tier 2: In addition to Tier 1, your max upload size is now 500 MB, and your max duration on Litterbox can be 7 days, as well as tracking uploads/deleting early.
Tier 3: In addition to Tier 2, your max upload size is now 1 GB.
Catbox has enough float to cover the server bill that was due on the 1st of June, however does not have the money to float for another 2 months. I need to recoup the $1,300 in monthly income from Patreon, and if all of the previous $7 and $15 Patrons re-pledged at Tier 2, that would be enough to make it there!
I hope that you can help me reach this goal, not just for the future of Catbox, but for the future of the free Internet. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me directly.
