Ranting about Winx Club Season 4ās Romance plots
I feel like yapping about Winx so letās talk about the absolute dogshit romance of season 4, and how I have a weird fondness for it but also I absolutely loathe it. Iāll seperate it into the 4 main love related conflicts.
So in season 4 episode 4 weāre introduced to Andy, Bloomās childhood friend- oh wait *checks notes* fiancĆ©. Childhood fiancĆ©. We donāt get to find out why they broke up or how they met because the sole purpose of that information is to stir up drama between the Specialists and Winx. And honestly, both are at fault. Sky for assuming Bloom would ditch him given the chance despite ya know, him doing exactly that with Diaspro in season 1, and Bloom for kissing Andy on the cheek when she has a boyfriend! āOh but itās a greeting people greet each other that way!ā No friendly greetings are explicitly showed by HUGGING. The Winx hug, Bloom and her parents hug, if it was a greeting weād have way more shipping fuel for the girls being poly than just them hugging. I also want to touch on the fact Bloom calls the Specialists out for stalking them since they went to Earth without their permission, which thanks Bloom you may be a season late with how Nabu stalked Aisha but at least you caught up. Now I can understand why thereās drama between Sky and Bloom, and Riven and Musa which Iāll get into later, butā¦what the fuck did Timmy/Tecna do for them to side with their respective groups when Timmy literally went to hell and back because he believed his girl was still alive? Youāre telling me he wouldnāt stick by his girl but Aisha and Nabu, who at this point have been dating for only a year, are the only ones doubting their argument in episode 4?? Oh but it gets worse from hereā¦
So, Brandon and Stella, letās get into that. Thereās obviously the Mitzi and Stella drama which is really stupid because why is Mitzi going for Brandon instead of Sky since Bloomās her rival- actually wait let me put that in my love triangle fic as an idea hmā¦ Anyways Stella and Mitzi beef which is stupid because Mitzi already lost, but one thing I donāt see anyone talk about is how Brandon was also in the wrong. Mitzi catching feelings after he saved her is understandable but Brandon never says that heās taken by Stella. He also gave Mitzi his phone number as a prank but she thought it was serious and he never told her otherwise. This is really stupid and because of that Mitzi managed to send a photo of the Winx and Andyās band hanging out and the Specialists complain about that. I mean I get what they were going for but the fact no one questions why Mitzi took that photo and was spying on the Winx is really odd. At least they eventually forgot/resolved that plot in episode 7.
Musa and Riven, oh Musa and Riven. Iāll always be a Riven defender because he gets a lot of slack for things he either redeemed himself for, or gets called out on. But MUSA, omg, Iāll try and keep it short. Letās talk about Riven first, he gets upset she wants to pursue a music career on Earth because to him itās out of character for Musa and suspects her having a thing for Jason Queen. The first part is really stupid because it retcons how supportive he was towards her music career in season 2 when she had her concert. The heck happened to that Riven, you anomaly! After he ends things, he has an arc where he should work on himself which is a fine idea but likeā¦ in one scene, Nabu says he canāt say anything bad about Musa and has to always take the blame?? yeah this is why you donāt take advice from a sheltered prince who stalked his future wife, or a romantic whoās solution is lovebombing (Yeah Iām not fond of Nabu and Helia in this season). At least heās called out for his shitty behavior which I canāt say for Musa and is why I hate her even more this season. You know when he accused Musa of having a thing for Jason, well heās GODDAMN RIGHT! After they break up Musa has the big brained idea of trying to get with her fucking career manager, and she gets heartbroken he has a wife. Look I get liking silver foxes Musa I really do but thatās your manager. But the part that pissed me off the most is how the writers emphasize how sheās the victim and Rivenās the bad guy when theyāre both wrong. She fucking hates his guts and says multiple times that HE needs to fix his behavior and never takes any blame when they both fucking suck at communicating their feelings. And after all of that complaining about Riven and kissing Andy on the cheek when she knows HES WORKING ON HIMSELF FOR HER, she takes him back at the very end when Riven was starting to move on. Their love story in season 4 is pure agony, I hate it. The worst part is they could have commended on a relationship becoming long distance and tackle Rivenās mommy issues but instead we get this corny ass conflict.
And lastly Aisha and Nabu. Theyāre the least bad but my main gripe is how theyāve canonically only dated for about a year or so and yet theyāre like a Mary sue couple. Theyāre so perfect, Aishaās swooning over Nabu, theyāre thinking of moving already, like guys itās been a year, youāre moving way too fast. Thereās also the fact they only made them so perfect so that Nabuās death is more impactful, which is really lazy to make not only them out of character for a plot point but to have everyone else have issues to drive that point home. Personally I donāt mind Nabu dying because itās not him being killed off by a character itās him sacrificing himself to protect everyone from the Black Circleās power being unleashed. But yeah their love story is just a narrative tool for more drama and itās evident with how out of character they are.
So to end things off, how Iād fix things: Have Sky be irrational about Bloomās childhood ex Andy, maybe Andy still has feelings but she rejects him because she moved on. For Stella, Mitzi and Brandon, have Brandon reject her advances and Mitzi be stubborn. Just kind of a gag, or even just make Mitzi go after Sky since she hates Bloom anyway. Riven and Musa make the main conflict be about them becoming long distance since Riven will go back to Magix/Magic City and have both of them learn how to deal with it, maybe they get back together and work things through, maybe they break up because theyāre not compatible. And for Aisha and Nabu, add in her being upset about the boys following them to Earth and be more flawed. And in general itād be funnier if they made the love drama even more ridiculous and crazy, like tease some ships between the wizards and winx like they did with Flora and Anagan, Iād personally have Ogron/Tecna and Gantlos/Bloom be some. Hell there is Bloom and Gantlos content I can talk about another time. You could also have more romance tropes like sharing an umbrella, sharing a motorcycle ride, etc etc. Just go fucking crazy with it man. Without being contrived and stupid of course. But season 4ās romance was agonizing because of how contrived it is, and even if I pointed out a lot of flaws, if those were intentional like Riven being a dick in season 1 then Iād let it slide, but the intent so clearly doesnāt match and yeah, thatās why I made this rant.
