For those who don't know, this piece is titled 'Unfinished Painting', by Keith Haring. He painted it about a year before his death of AIDs. I believe he actually finished other pieces between this one and his death. He left the majority of the canvas blank to represent his life and art career cut short due to HIV/AIDs. This was a deliberate choice and commentary about all that we lose (both personally and culturally) by ignoring the AIDs crisis at the time (1989). He was devastated he didn't have time to make more art. 'Finishing' Unfinished Painting is straight up spitting on Haring's grave and shows no understanding to the meaning behind the art. The AI interpretation doesn't even follow his extremely recognizable shape language and symbols. This is why people are angry about AI art. All commerce images and no meaning or humanity

Lawson addressed the situation with clarity and composure.

In her words:

“That man’s disability got exploited that night.”

“That’s not inclusivity. That’s exploitation.”

“You censored one Black man and failed to protect two others.”

Jayme Lawson criticised the handling of the moment by both BAFTAs and the BBC broadcast, arguing that proper care and protection were not exercised for the Black actors involved.

She also shared why spaces like the NAACP Image Awards feel different, noting that they are environments where dignity, safety, and humanity are prioritised.

@avobrav Before AI, if you wanted to make a terrible thing like this you'd make a crude animation or something, which is a time sink. Enough time to either stop partway through and realize what a shit you are, or to put it out and have people comment on how much time you spent on it. But this is just putting in a prompt for the worst things you can think of, with no consequence to you or room for self reflection. It's streamlined bullying and it's scary.

@asheratoftheseas I see AI being used more for bullying and harassment than anything else. Which is on brand given how tech bros want to annihilate everyone because someone might have forgot to invite them somewhere in 7th grade.

These are all great points. Harassment has always existed, but I don't think people are ready for kids being sent AI videos from their bullies of themselves getting beaten up or killed, and it's only a matter of time before something like that happens tbh. It's like deepfake porn, where men (who should've been aborted) have made AI porn of women without their consent to harass them, and like avobrav was saying, in the past, animation and Photoshop existed but it took time and skill to make a convincing Photoshop edit of someone naked, or being punched, or whatever. Now, it requires no time or skill. People can digitally harass others with a simple push of a button, and it's making bullying and harassment more streamlined and faster than ever. It's really sickening, and yeah you do get a sense from these tech bros that they get a twisted glee out of it because now they can get revenge on hot girls who rejected them by making AI porn of them, or they can imagine themselves as big and strong and beating people they hate (like disabled people, evidently). It's just crazy to me how much generative AI is bringing out people's worst impulses and anti-social behavior
