So one day a dwarf is talking to a human and finally realizes that when humans say woman, they generally mean “person who is theoretically capable of childbirth” because for whatever reason, humans assign social expectations based genital differences. (What a fucked up culture, the dwarf thinks.) But hey, better communication! So the next time the dwarf introduces theirself, they say, oh, by the way, I am what you call a “woman.”

And the trade negotiations just stop. They just stop cold. The tall people insist on speaking to the man, they insist on talking to the lady dwarf about all sorts of irrelevant bullshit, like recipes and childrearing and perfume

so the dwarf goes back home, enraged

and is like “BTW guess what happened, we’re all just going to be men forever now as far as the tall ones are concerned”

and everyone is justly horrified at this barbarism but they all agree to do whatever  it takes to squeeze those tall bastards for all the resources they are worth

and the dwarves get surlier, and the trade agreements less generous

and the tall people are all “what a miserable and greedy race”

but really they’re just still nursing a grudge about how goddamn backwards and sexist the tall people are

because their best negotiator, one of their sacred cave people, got snubbed the instant she said she was capable of childbirth - and a mortal insult like that can never be forgiven

Just as an additional thought, we hear that women dwarves generally stay within the mountain and are a protected, guarded subset of the dwarves. There’s not many of them, so there’s an implication that women dwarves are too precious to be allowed out.

But what if this too is a mistranslation? What if the dwarves were talking to the Men and when asked “where are all your women?” they hit a wall. They whisper amongst themselves, and eventually come back with a question, “What’s a woman?” The Men are incredulous.

“Why, the members of your race that bear children, of course!“ 

More dwarven whispering.

They reach the conclusion that Men mean dwarves who are currently pregnant. Well! Of course those dwarves are currently safe within the mountain, well cared for and generally loathe to travel until the child is born. The Men take this to mean that all dwarven women are discouraged from traveling, and that their primary purpose is childbearing. Dwarves find this a satisfactory outcome, especially with the way Men treat their women, and so even when the misunderstanding becomes clear to them they never correct it.

Ok this is making me go insane because. that’s a photoshop. it absolutely is, someone’s edited a progress pride flag onto the shark.

you can see spots where the red is misaligned with the top of the body and even extends slightly beyond it. the lines of the flag don’t conform to the shape of the shark’s body at all. you can see the gills through it as if it’s at like 70% opacity.

but like. the progress pride shark is real and it looks like this:

yknow. cause it’s a flag wrapped around a model shark.

why was this edited????? it’s a real thing but for some reason someone edited a digital flag over it instead of just using a real photo of the real thing??? why????

I was high off my ass last night and had this dream where I was in this dense ass forest and sitting there was a tall woman. She was so tall I couldn’t see her face but she was wearing gold and I was like “uh…hi?” And she said “I made you, do you know that?” And I nodded and she was like “I hear your thoughts. there’s something so loving about what tom björklund does and just- fuck I’m foaming at the mouth here

facial reconstruction isn’t a new concept (see the Kennewick Man/Patrick Stewart incident) but it’s difficult to find people that are truly good at it! genuinely there is a big gap in this field because there just aren’t a lot of people who do it professionally!

facial reconstruction, especially from bone or bone fragments, is such a fascinating intersection of art and science, and a tremendous amount of care is put into determining what these people might have looked like.

with that said, it’s VERY easy to screw it up

configuring muscle attachments and fat distribution is genuinely *very* difficult to do, and when you do it badly, you get this (pictured above). by adding too much muscle, they gave this 600 year old man a VERY interesting jawline (notice that the bottom of the chin doesn’t match up with the bone at all!) and they *really* made him look older than he was. would you believe me if I said that he was estimated to only be 46 years old?

basically I’m just REALLY excited about Tom Björklund’s art because it’s amazing work, just from an anthropology perspective

facial reconstructions aren’t just an artsy thing that you can just say “oh, that’s cool!” to

by giving these people faces, even if they aren’t always accurate, we open the doors for the average person to connect with the past at a very human level. sure, looking at bones is cool, but looking at art of someone that lived thousands of years ago is *incredible*

looking at a picture of a boy that lived thousands of years ago and thinking “yeah, he would’ve loved Minecraft” is EXACTLY the reaction that these pieces are meant to elicit

Some of the things I appreciated about Steven Universe as a fat person who experiences oppression for their weight:

The main character is fat

That is not portrayed as a negative thing

Steven is allowed to eat food. He never has to earn or justify it. He nourishes his body, and the show doesn’t mock him for it. He’s even shown eating foods that aren’t nutrient-rich, and it’s still portrayed positively.

None of the fat characters are ever shown to love food because they’re fat from what I remember.

The fat characters are allowed to bond over food.

Steven’s weight is never really mentioned. It’s just his identity, and he’s allowed to be who he is.

Rose Quartz is portrayed as beautiful, even the epitome of beauty to many of the characters, and she is fat.

Pink Diamond chose to look like a Rose Quartz, and she never once hated her fat body type. She liked how she looked. Becoming fat was never a negative thing. And although weight is not a choice in real life, the fact that a skinny character chose to be fat while never viewing it as some sort of fault is really just…so meaningful to me.

Rose doesn’t wear shoes, and other fat characters like Steven wear flip flops. Usually fat people are forced to cover up, including their feet. A fat person’s feet are often viewed as gross or unsightly due to fatphobia. However, the fat characters in Steven Universe are allowed to wear what they want!

Fat characters were not designed with tiny hands and feet. Many artists design fat characters with small hands and feet to infantilize and cute-ify them. It’s done to make the fat character an “acceptable” version of fat. Sometimes it’s done to make a character look smaller, other times it’s done by artists like fat fetishists who want to emphasize a character’s weight by drawing disproportionate fat bodies. Instead, characters like Steven and Rose are allowed to be big!

There are a plethora of fat body types drawn. They don’t just draw one body type and call it a day, and they definitely don’t just draw a “thick” body either.

Rose and Steven’s gem are on their STOMACH. Their power, what makes them special, what makes them a DIAMOND and powerful and strong and graceful is connected to their stomach!!!!!! Their stomach isn’t shameful, it’s something to be proud of! Rose even shows part of her stomach with her dress!!!

Did I mention grace? Because the fat characters in the show are allowed to be graceful, elegant, beautiful, fast, evasive, and strong! Being graceful in particular is never allowed of fat characters in almost any media. Steven and Rose have their own unique powers that other gems don’t, and one of those powers is floating! They’re allowed to be graceful and light! 

Their weight isn’t used as a stereotype nor does it affect their powers. I’m tired of all of the fat characters who are forced to be defensive tanks and walls, only strong because they’re big, and unable to be moved because of their weight. Finally there are fat characters whose abilities don’t rely on fatphobic stereotypes!!!!

Fat and feminine are never shown as mutually exclusive in the show. 

The fat characters have relationships with skinny characters. This is incredible since that feels rare, even in real life. Fatphobia affects people so much that many fat people feel a skinny person liking them is impossible. This show tells fat people that they CAN be liked by skinny people. They don’t have to limit their dating lives and feel scared at the idea of a skinny person seeing their body.

Steven stays fat!!! No matter how much he ages, he’s always fat! They don’t use an excuse to make him skinny later on. Even as a monster in the last episode, he’s still fat!!! They never took away this representation for fat people!

There’s more than one fat character! And the fat characters aren’t walking stereotypes!

Fat people are actually…capable of love?? What??? All other shows had told me fat people aren’t able to have romantic lives!!

The humor isn’t based on abusing and oppressing fat people.

There are fat characters of multiple different identities!

Not only are there a lot of fat characters, but many of them are part of the main cast!!

When Steven wore Sadie’s dress, the humor wasn’t because “Fat guy wearing a dress, haha!” It was funny because it was cute and such a Steven thing to do. It was never about his weight.

Tall fat characters? Check. Short fat characters? Check. The heights of characters aren’t used to emphasize their weight either!

This show was seen not just by adults but also by fat children. Children who will grow up with at least one piece of representation. Children who now have a chance at a childhood without hating their bodies.

There’s so many other things as well. These are just off the top of my head. Steven Universe is probably the most fat positive show that currently exists, and I’m very grateful for the series. Hopefully other shows will take notes and start treating fat people as fellow human beings too.
