Dean Stockwell in The Careless Years, 1957 Director: Arthur Hiller
Future "Mr. and Mrs." Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward in screen tests with James Dean for the Warner Bros./Elia Kazan drama East of Eden filmed in late-1953. Paul and Joanne tested for the roles eventually played by Richard Davalos and Julie Harris in the film. It's of interest to note that Joanne first met Paul the year this test was shot when he made his stage debut on Broadway in the William Inge play Picnic in which he had a supporting role and Joanne was an understudy. Joanne later recalled during an appearance on The Dick Cavett Show in 1970 that she thought on first meeting Paul that he was a "nice boy from Shaker Heights, Ohio" who "really isn't very talented, but he has a pretty face so maybe he'll make it". Though she wasn't initially wildly attracted to Newman, she later stated on The Today Show in 2002 that while working together in Picnic she thought he looked like "an ad for an ice cream soda on a very hot day". Paul was married at the time to his first wife Jackie Witte, so his relationship with Woodward remained strictly co-workers and they both moved on and lost contact after they left the play. Their auditions with James Dean for East of Eden were shot separately on different days when they were brought in to test for Kazan. Paul was friendly with Jimmy due to both being students at Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio in New York, and he later recalled how impressed and inspired he was by Dean's talent. "It wasn't so much a matter of whom I was acting with," he later recalled of his time at the Actors Studio, "it was whom I was watching. Marlon Brando, Maureen Stapleton, Geraldine Page, Jimmy Dean. A pretty hotshot group." They were also both friends with photographer Sanford Roth and posed separately with Roth's Siamese cat "Louis XIV", Dean in 1955 and Newman in 1956. Following Jimmy's tragic passing at the untimely age of 24 in a car accident near Cholame, California in September of 1955, Paul was cast in four leading roles originally slated for Dean: the TV drama The Battler in 1955 (in which Newman was originally cast in a supporting role opposite Jimmy), the Rocky Graziano bio-pic Somebody Up There Likes Me in 1956, and the western The Left Handed Gun in 1958 (Paul originated the role in a Gore Vidal scripted television version in 1955 entitled The Death of Billy the Kid which was also intended to star Dean). Paul and Joanne met again in 1957 when they were cast as love interests in the film The Long, Hot Summer and sparks flew, prompting Paul to end his first troubled marriage and embark on a romance with Joanne. The pair married in Las Vegas in January of 1958 and remained together for fifty years until Newman's passing at the age of 83 in 2008.
