Yet at the same time, participants rated sycophantic AI models as higher quality, more trustworthy, and more desirable for future use, which may explain why this behavior has persisted despite its harmful impacts.

Dick creaks up into a crouch, poking his head around the doorframe, staying low. His shower is suddenly working again, water hammering into the stall and sluicing out onto the floor. His drain, never very functional, appears to have given up entirely. It takes him half the wall to find the damn pipes and turn the water off, the shower blasting like a machine gun the whole time. For a moment thereâs quiet, just water dripping. His phone rings where he left it on the counter, jumping with the vibration. BRUCE, it reads. Dick answers. âYou will not fucking believe the morning I am having,â Dick says. âEverything happens to me. Iâve told you about my landlord, right?â âDick,â Bruce says. Something in his voice makes the hair on the back of Dickâs neck rise. - Dick has a bad day.

The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.

Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals canât perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And thatâs how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!
Best brain hack is taking âthis too shall passâ and applying it in the micro. The panic you feel from an argument with a friend, wanting to get on your phone when you should be studying, the absolute obsession with someone youâre crushing on, pain from rejection, utter hopelessness at a situation that is not entirely hopeless. Heavy on situations that induce panic and incentivize you to act out of turn, maybe to send a text you shouldnât be sending or to blow up at someone or whatever it is. The antidote to knee jerk reactions is literally just âthis too shall passâ and allowing yourself to feel the physical manifestation of your extreme emotion. Literally just ride it out. Even for things that canât immediately be resolved, it makes such a big difference and prevents you from reacting in ways that you would undoubtedly regret down the line.

Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, being spent on species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
