i’ve been trying to write a post about my experience with wake up dead man as an ex-hardcore catholic who was raised in the church for like an hour now, but i just keep sobbing to myself over the scene where one character asks another to pray for her & he sits for hours consoling her… not “god’s here”, but “i’m here”.

it’s so embarrassing but i’m literally tearing up just writing this… that’s really what it’s all about... that’s really what it’s all about…!!!!!!!!!

The way the music and sound all completely disappear in that scene and it's just one person pouring out her grief to another and it's the most horrible relatable thing in the world the thing we all fear the mundane horror of losing someone you love that way, slowly, terribly, and feeling guilty and alone it was so moving, it's the absolute solid center of a wacky plot I love it so much

The Assessment follows the story of a married couple, living in a world where climate change has made humanity dependent on the strict management of its resources to the point where even having a child is regulated by the government. Mia and Aaryan need to go through “The Assessment” to find out if they are suitable for having a child.

The premise of this movie sounded interesting to me from the start. I didn’t go into this with any particular expectations since this is also the director’s film debut, but I was just deeply curious how a premise like this would play out. And my thoughts are pretty mixed after watching the film.

Elizabeth Olsen and Alicia Vikander’s performances are incredible, to the point where some of it even becomes uncomfortable to watch. While some of these very uncomfortable scenes are well-placed throughout an almost 2 hour runtime, a few of them struck me as “just there for the purpose of shocking the audience”. And that is where my biggest issue with this movie comes in. I am not sure if it needed all the heavy explanation towards the end. This is one of those films that would have been a lot better if they had just stayed open-ended. Too much information was being dumped in the last ten to twenty minutes of this and it sadly ruined the ending a little for me.

There are definitely things I like here, like the aforementioned performances, or just the general attempt at portraying a world scorched by Climate Change. But even that falls a little flat in the long run, inevitably leaving us with somewhat of a shallow attempt at tackling this premise.
