Perhaps THE hottest MILGRAM take I have:

Shidou is just as self-pitying as Mu, and arguably less self-aware, he just comes at it from a different angle.

His desperation to be punished in T1 seems to be a combination of genuine suicidality and regret, but I think there's also an implication that he just wants to rid himself of guilt. He wants to die so that he doesn't have to acknowledge what he has done.

Es actually acknowledges this in the audio dramas (particularly Molech). "I'd rather this all be over as soon as possible./Like I care about what's convenient for you." and in Aescelpius "I need to be punished. I need to atone for my sins."

So whereas Mu comes from the angle of 'I want to be forgiven because I do not want to feel guilt for what I have done', Shidou comes from the angle of 'I want to die so I do not feel guilt for what I have done'. And honestly I find it interesting from an ethical perspective that people see the latter as so much morally better/purer.
