Rewatching Moonlight Chicken and I'm struck by what a ceaselessly generous person Jim is. It's easy to forget, partly because Jim doesn't think of himself that way: he just makes the choices he feels good about, which happen to be things like letting his customers fill their stomachs, keeping prices low despite his own rising costs, and cutting back his own needs to take care of his people. I didn't even notice until my second viewing that he skips paying his car insurance to buy the necklace for Leng and Praew. The narrative is so sunk in Jim's pov that none of those moments are highlighted, unless another character is there to directly call them out.
Especially when you know that he lost all his savings after Beam died, and was probably still crawling his way back from that when lockdown hit, it says a lot that he never tightened his fist. He's stubbornly dedicated to giving as much as he can and probably more than he should.
Mam left so her love for them wouldn't turn to resentment and hate. What she did was in some ways selfish, cruel and hurtful, but it was in other ways the kindest thing she could have done. Because living with resentment, to know clearly and intimately that you are considered to have ruined someone's life by being born, that can destroy a person. In some ways, her action gave them all a shot at happiness, where her staying would have caused only misery. The responsibility fell to Chanon to fill the gap, but he was only half a man without her. He couldn't see the kindness, only the pain. You can't teach what you don't understand. And then he also left; despite believing that love is presence, he also defined his love for Palm by absence. He threw himself into others, and justified that as love for his son. He said it was for him, but pain takes so many shapes and Palm is shaped like his open, bleeding wound. He had to escape him too, or the pain would have killed them both.
The pattern of Palm's life is people leaving him to save him. And Neung is going to do the same.
Never Let Me Go is a goddamn tragedy.
I’m rewatching the red shirt scene AKA the official break up scene and it is DEVASTATING NOW
Rewatching made me realize that they are both aware their relationship will not survive at home the way it is now. So admitting that they are going home means admitting that they are breaking up.
So when Pat says “thank you. For indulging a silly guy like me” “you never leave me. You fight by my side. That makes me very happy” Pat is admitting how grateful he is that Pran is willing to stay with him, despite it making him miserable (cause he misses his family). But they both know that they would never truly be happy with only each other, cut off from the rest of their loved ones.
That break up was beautiful. Instead of Pat saying, “we should break up”, he instead said “thank you. Thank you for this beautiful thing we have made together. Thank you for always choosing me, even when your anxieties and fears are telling you to run. And thank you for staying with me while I processed and denied and mourned. Thank you for indulging a silly guy like me. Thank you”
And then Pran says they should go out, get drunk, and celebrate. To spend their last day celebrating their love. A tribute to its beauty and wonder. Which is what their love deserves.
And Pran sings a song he wrote dedicated to their love. And Pat smiles as a tear rolls down his cheek.
God I’m in my feels.
This episode is so devastatingly beautiful.
