This post is about the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes
she was a physically and emotionally abused orphan who at 12 years old knew she had no family or friends, and knew no one wanted her. and she still chose to see the beauty and magic in the world. that’s not saccharine, it’s courage and strength.
My favourite thing about Groundhog Day is that there’s a fair amount of statistical evidence that groundhog-based weather predictions are actually less accurate than random guesses. It’s not even a matter of sunny days being an objectively poor predictor of long winters, because most groundhog keepers don’t even use the “if the groundhog sees its shadow” thing anymore – the just have a guy in a silly hat pretend to talk to the groundhog, then predict whatever they want, and they still manage to be wrong more often than pure chance would allow, by a statistically significant margin. There’s something strangely charming about putting so much effort and ceremony into something that’s demonstrably so bad at its ostensible purpose.
