Coral reefs are some of our planets most diverse ecosystems. A reef is build up by thousands of soft-bodied animals called coral polyps that grows on a calcium carbonate skeleton. These ecosystems attract a multitude of animals including a vast variety of brightly colored tropical fish. Not only are coral reefs extremely beautiful, but they also have a huge impact on life on land and on the rest of the planet. 🌊💙 Find below 5 fun facts about coral reefs. 🧜🏼‍♀️ 1. There are 3 types of coral reef Coral reefs can be divided into three types: fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and atolls. Fringing reefs are close to shore, whereas a barrier reef will lie further out to sea. Often, atolls will be mistaken for islands because they are so large and generally appear on the rim of a lagoon. 2. Some reefs are thousands of years old The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is 5000 to 10.000 years old for example. The Great Barrier Reef has grown to include 900 smaller reefs and cover 2,600 miles crossing 500 islands. 3. Corals need sunlight to grow Even though corals are animals, they need sunlight to grow as they are in symbiosis with algae. Therefore corals need sunlight to grown and can mostly be found in shallow water not deeper that 45 feet/14 meter. They are normally found in tropical seas where the water is warmer and more clean. 4. Coral reefs are an important nesting ground The calm waters around the reefs work as an important mating ground for fish and other sea species. These protected environments create a safe.haven for eggs, keeping them safe from hungry mouths. 5. Coral reefs can help manage global warming Coral reefs plays a vital role in imagining the worlds CO2 levels. As a giant network of living organisms they are essential in leveling and regulating CO2 levels in the ocean.
