the outline for my mostly fluff/fun/filler chapter goes CRAZY. Usually they're kinda short even for long chapters and I just make shit up as I go along - no. The fluff is so clear in my mind and IM SO READY TO WRITE IT HELL YES

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is nowĀ open until 13th August 2026.
Itās short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed Iāll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like weāre part of a huge and diverse community.

The thing about character design theory is I really think we shouldnāt just keep reinforcing our āthis is what a sneaky and untrustworthy character looks like, this is what a threatening and intimidating character looks like, this is what an innocent character worth protecting looks like, this is what a smart and competent character looks like, this is what a man looks like vs what a woman looks likeā conventions like theyāre innate human wiring that we tap into scientifically and not like, heavily societal

Iām sorry but people on TikTok are so weird when it comes to Ryland and his characterizationā¦ like at the end of the day he is a grown adult man and not some small little cinnamon role baby boy who shakes whenever someone looks his way.
Like canonically (!) in both book and film he is quite assertive as long as he feels comfortable enough. He is shy or can get embarrassed/awkward but heās not like super insecure. That man went toe to toe with Stratt (and the other characters) whenever he felt like it. He could be downright rude and arrogant when someone questioned his intelligence/ideas. (Hint hint UNESCO conference. Doing that takes a level of arrogance only found in the depths of academia)
And the whole swearing thing? Donāt even get me started. He doesnāt not swear because he is too pure for the world but because he spends his days with kids. He says 'fuck' when he sees Rockyās ship.
You donāt have to headcanon him as a dom or whatever but the way people pretend like he would start shaking and crying at the mere suggestion of sex is mostly just infantilizing.
(Just to be clear, itās fine to think about him like that and write about it in fact write more it just becomes weird when they get all holier than thou about it and pretend like itās canon instead of what they think heād be like)
At the end of the day, itās fiction and everyone can make up their mind especially over stuff like his sexual preferences (which we technically know nothing about), just donāt be weird and pretend like your headcanon is religion and everyone elseās is ridiculous š«¶
It's the tropification of characters. This is something I've noticed like no matter how multifaceted or complex a character is the fandom will reduce them to one trope. God forbid a character ever show nerdy excitement the fandom WILL turn them into an awkward flustered uwu bean even if nothing in their character indicates that they would be like that. There's this tendency to treat enthusiasm and curiosity as childlike traits which is annoying.
Also just to throw my two cents into the proverbial ring: granted, this is my own interpretation of things but I think thereās enough evidence to argue that Ryland is somewhere on the autism spectrum. And, unfortunately, that ALSO leans towards infantilization as well, whether intentional or subconscious...
Personally, I think Ryland is most interesting when heās someone who WANTS to be that kind of soft, gentle presence but at every turn heās reminded that he isnāt built like that and that thatās okay.
Iāve always gravitated towards characters in media that are soft spoken, quiet, demure and shy because theyāre everything Iāve felt like I wanted to be and maybe a little bit felt like they were the way I could be accepted by others
Meanwhile, I am actually an easily excitable dork with poor volume control who swears like a sailor and a truck driver had a baby because I just get excited about my passions. And being like that doesnāt feel like a performance I have to be aware of 24/7
I think Ryland is super interesting if heās multifaceted like that. Someone who wants to be the pinnacle of a soft, gentle presence, who maybe (admittedly this is headcanon) has had experience with people in his life lashing out at others in anger and doesnāt want to be that kind of person so he tries to just shut his anger and vitriol out entirely until it ruptures out of him like a cataclysm (UNESCO).
But he canāt help himself, who he is is someone who will fight tooth and nail for what he believes, someone who is not afraid to take a dig at someone for being an idiot, someone who might not have a lot of faith in himself but by GOD is he going to believe in others and someone who, if push came to shove, will fight like a trapped animal. And that doesnāt make him any less of a good, decent person just because he doesnāt fit a stereotype of what āgoodā looks like.
