this is an evil question because i have too many opinions but i will give them!

controversial opinion for all of the ladies: lesbianism would not fix any of them. this rhetoric makes no sense to me. especially since lesbian relationships can be chaotic as fuck. to quote Alice Longyu Gao: “a lot of you lesbians are fucking crazy.”

controversial opinion for cuddy because I think you’ll enjoy it: from a character analysis standpoint, I cannot see cuddy being the sort of person to be into dominance. She is a BUSY WOMAN, she doesn’t need MORE responsibilities. I can’t see her as a mommy domme either; I get why people like to think about her in that way and write fic like that, but—again, purely from a character analysis standpoint—she has a very complicated relationship with motherhood, it’s a big part of her character, and I can’t see her engaging with that dynamic sexually.

controversial Cameron opinion: I don’t even know if any of my opinions should actually be considered controversial because they’re canon. canon Cameron is controversial and that’s what I get mad about. She’s either an evil woman who never loved Chase, or a poor innocent lady who got pressured into a relationship with Chase. She’s neither of those, actually. She’s incredibly complicated. She doesn’t actually love dying people. She plays 5D chess with herself and loses. Also, she was completely justified in her reaction to Chase killing Diballa. I’ll die on that hill.

controversial Thirteen opinion: she tends to get characterized in ways I don’t really agree with, mostly in a shipping context: she’s either the Cool Bisexual who’s going to give someone their gay awakening and be Really Good At Sex (come on guys, that one girl ranked her a 7/10, that’s not a Life Changing ranking), or she’s the sad fucked-up sick girl who needs to be taken care of. there's a lot more nuance to her character than either of these characterizations, and she does grow as a character throughout her seasons on the show. For most of this time, though, she is not letting anyone in (except maybe Foreman, briefly). She’s incredibly guarded. She’s full of secrets. She’s a skittish stray cat. That being said, I don’t think she’d be interested in being involved with anyone’s gay awakening. “Straight” girl wants to question her sexuality? Thirteen is running in the other direction. That’s too much drama.

controversial ship opinion: hi time for me to have Opinions about cuddley. absolutely no hate to the ship, i do enjoy it, I have no issue with people enjoying it in whatever way they're enjoying it. HOWEVER. again, from a character analysis perspective. I think the dynamics being written most commonly should be reversed. as I previously mentioned, I don't feel Cuddy would be the "dom" type, but when it comes to Thirteen we KNOW that she has issues with control, especially when it comes to her life/body. In season 5, she's seeking a sense of control through sex with random women. She literally has a disease that will cause her to lose control of her own brain and body. Conclusion? I would like to take the common dom/sub dynamic people put on cuddley and flip it upside down, for character reasons. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

bonus controversial chase opinion: people who actually like chase often want to paint him as a poor sad boy who we should take pity on because he's traumatized. this man, in my opinion, very likely does not even see himself as being traumatized. by his account, he's Fine. he's Normal. he thinks that if someone's a burden to their loved ones they should kill themselves. he doesn't see how incredibly telling that thought is about his own psyche. in his mind, he's just a completely normal guy.

Speaking of "House MD as a product of its time:" an exchange I think about a lot is in S1's Fidelity:

HOUSE: Huh. I didn't know it was possible for a woman to be unusually irritable. CAMERON: Nice try, but you're a misanthrope, not a misogynist.

I'm not kidding when I say I think about it a lot. I'm a bit obsessed with it. Because I think this exchange is two things at once: blatantly false, and intended to be true.

I think that the show, the writing of the show, and the intention is that this is correct. House might make jokes, be edgy, but he's equal opportunity. He doesn't single out women, or Black people -- he hates everyone! It's very of the era: the early 2000s were peak snarky jerk antihero, but also peak edgy humor of the time on the left: we're not actually racist/sexist/bigoted, we support those values, we're just joking. It's ironic. House isn't bigoted, he's joking, trying to get a reaction. He hates everyone equally -- hate is fine, as long as you're not biased. And besides, we know he doesn't actually hate people at all, deep down.

That's the intention, right?

But also: of course House is misogynistic. But again: I don't think the show knows it. Or put another way: sure, he hates everyone. But when was the last time he made fun of a man?

Sure: he'll call women emotional, idiots, hormonal, weak, assume they're unfaithful, disloyal, and manipulative. He calls them bitches and not in a reclaimed complimentary way: he makes fun of Cuddy and Cameron's "feminine" traits. But it's equal opportunity, right?

He makes fun of Foreman for being Black, poor, a criminal, dangerous, violent, and less intelligent -- not to mention his many slave jokes -- but it's ironic! He doesn't mean it! It's equal opportunity!

What jokes does House tell about men? Wilson or Chase? When does House make fun of men? Oh, sure: he does make fun of them both. Usually by calling them gay, or implying Chase is feminine or a child or in other words: not a man. Because to be womanly is to be insulting.

I'm not writing this to say, House is problematic, House-the-character is a bad person and you shouldn't enjoy the show. It's just so emblematic of the culture of the time. It's ironic. He doesn't mean it. He's not a racist or a misogynist -- he's equal opportunity! And everyone in universe knows it, too, so they don't really get offended -- it's just House being House, just a guy doing a goof, and never mind that for all we're told it's equal opportunity, his jokes are only ever aimed at minorities.

"i missed you," he says. it's unclear if they've spoken at all since chase was fifteen.

also chase, in a cut line in the pilot, saying he got the idea to x-ray the leg from his father's textbook. chase in hunting, getting a theory from a paper his father wrote. chase who knows his father was at a conference locally last year, chase who still reads everything his dad writes, chase who got interested in medicine as a kid locked in his dad's study, reading his textbooks. you walked out of my life, and now you're walking back in? he asks, justifiably angry, but studying his dad's career and publications from afar.

ughh thinking this morning about little 15 year old chase. dropping his sister off in daycare and rushing to catch the tram to school. getting in trouble because his uniform is wrinkled or has stains. checking the bins when he gets home for empty bottles, doing laundry and homework and entertaining his sister. calling his dad for allowance so he can pay the electric bill.

his friends all complain he never hangs out anymore -- because he hasn't told them what's going on; it's private and embarrassing. he had to quit the football team. he falls asleep in class. some of his teachers, father stephen, are nice about it. he starts to think seminary would be nice: peaceful and easy and filled with nice adults, unlike home. ughh

my hotter take: house and chase's relationship is so much more complex and interesting when you remember that chase doesn't actually like him all that much, doesn't love and worship him, is jealous of him and resents him as often as he laughs at house's jokes. house has let him down time and again, house is the one chase believes his wife loves and prefers, house is a rival, someone who has assaulted chase and fired him from a job he didn't want to leave, who stole his father's last words and let chase kill a patient rather than give him one ounce of sympathy or care. house is someone chase likes on a superficial level -- he's funny, he's interesting -- but never someone chase has trusted or relied on: there's a reason he rats to vogler, goes to foreman and not house after dibala: house is not someone he has particular faith in. superficial enjoyment? sure. but trust? chase's first words in the series: thankfully, i'm not house. his last: house could be difficult to work with.

house has inadvertently and intentionally screwed chase over, hurt him, and separated him from his loved ones. chase is the only one house has never praised or encouraged. and yet: house is the one who offers chase a place to land after his divorce, is a constant and source of employment when he has nothing else, gives him honest answers when he asks (does chase even know how rare that is?) and relies on, in some odd way, and is hurt by, again and again, when house continues to refuse to throw chase any sort of lifeline.

everyone agrees that house MD falls off around seasons 7 and 8 and they typically point toward nonsensical character retcons, flanderization, the way that medicine takes a backseat to character melodrama, but rarely does anyone point out how the cinematography of the show takes a massive nosedive compared to the earlier seasons (and especially season 1). just look at the difference in saturation, contrast, lighting, and color correction in a simple diner scene from season 1 vs. a clinic scene from season 8 [first screenshot is from @3scythes]

look at how rich and layered the first image from season 1 is - it has a deep, warm, red hue to it because the characters are in a dimly lit diner booth. it fits the intimacy of the space. the shadows are a deep, crisp black, the light is rarely a perfect white but it's very stark, especially against skin. the red diner seats, the brown of chase's blazer, and the shade of foreman's skin are deep and rich. most importantly, you can see the textures in the image: you can see the grains in the wooden both wall, you can tell the seats are made of a leathered material, there's a soft film grain to house's profile and chase and cameron's faces.

meanwhile, season 8 has very soft, flat, uninteresting lighting. the areas where the light should be very stark and bright are barely lighter than the base color of the material they're hitting. the only pure blacks in the image are the wrinkles of the female patient's dark coat, the black border between the wall and the floor, and the male patient's shirt. meanwhile, pitch black is used to block off the rest of the restaurant behind chase and cameron so that the camera is focused on their faces and the contents of the table.

the lack of deep shadow and points of brightness in the photo means that there's little to no contrast in the image. it also makes it much more difficult to distinguish between different textures because the image does not capture how different materials form shadows and capture light differently - for all you know, the clinic seat and house's blazer may as well be the same material. this also has the terrible side effect of making skin look like rubber or wax. it's the early 2010s, we're still suffering from the recession, you don't get to have good things like interesting lighting or your eye being naturally guided toward points of interest. it's the era of realismslop. your super-serious tv show about vicodin addict sherlock holmes looks like an unreal engine 5 video game demo cutscene with nanite, lumen, and lambert shading.

defenders of this stylistic choice (which it's not, it's a byproduct of thinking that just because you "upgrade" from film to a digital camera that you don't need to properly light and block your show) will say that the show becomes desaturated and grey because it's supposed to represent house's character devolution and the show becoming darker and more serious. i guess andrey zvyagintsev, jean-pierre melville, andrei tarkovsky, and andrzej zuławski missed that memo because they were able to make dark, depressing films with desaturated color palettes that still had contrast and looked visually appealing.

say what you will about the pilot episode and its characteristic black-and-orange traffic cone resident evil 5 piss filter, but it is at least a visual identity.

my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government
