There’s different colors representing different sea creatures ❤️🌊
Just a little reminder that the US Military is the world’s biggest polluter. The fight against ecological disaster must include fighting the war machine!
Buy Poseidon devotional jewelry from here to help save the oceans boom
guys it gets even better! not only are they cleaning up our oceans, which in and of itself would be AMAZING, but they’re using their project to better the world in other ways too, including:
employing local women in Bali for 80% of their workforce
offering a Closed-Loop program for customers to return broken/worn out products (they have stuff other than bracelets too!) to be recycled again
donating $25,000 to Monterey Bay Aquarium for sea otter conservation, another $25,000 to Global Penguin Society, $10,000 to Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project, $25,000 to Captains For Clean Water to support Everglades restoration, $25,000 to The Marine Mammal Center in Hawaii for the care of critically endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals, $20,000 to BirdLife International for seabird conservation, $24,528 to Earth Day network to support the Canopy Project - a global campaign to plant 7.8 billion trees by 2020, and more
additionally, “donated $21,325 in 2018 and will donate another $10,000 in 2019 to support the production of powerful media and art that drive crucial conservation wins while giving people hope and inspiring them to act”
if you can’t afford $20 for their fundraising bracelets, they do have other recycled products available, and at the very least please reblog this to boost awareness! here’s the link to their site again:

The point of getting rid of the death penalty isn’t that there are some innocent people on it. The point of prison abolition isn’t that there are some innocent people in prison.
The point is that the state shouldn’t have the power to kill people. The point is that the prison system commits systemic abuses of human rights, doesn’t reduce crime, is deeply racist, and doesn’t take the desires of the victims into account. To argue about whether one individual on death row or with a life sentence is innocent or guilty is just a distraction from the central issues, which is that these institutions are unjust and should not exist
i feel like a lot of white people in academia including myself sometimes forget that there is a huge difference between white conspiracy theorists being afraid of vaccines causing autism or whatever bullshit and POC, especially black people, fearing them bc of demonstrable abuse of medical power, including vaccines, against them. Like I strongly believe that the vaccine is meant to work correctly and isn't anything malicious but treating POC like they're stupid or anti intellectual for having reservations is not helpful to anyone.
I think one of the greatest realizations I ever made was that I didn’t have to choose between masculinity and femininity
The sooner you realise that you can do literally whatever you want as regards to your gender presentation (or lack thereof) and just take whatever bits and pieces you like from wherever, the sooner you can start enjoying life.
I’m slightly disturbed by the present notion going around that, if an author is problematic, you can no longer read and/or enjoy their work
or, more specifically, that you must instantly drop it and never speak of it again, no questions asked
mostly because if you try to only read books by the most ideologically perfect people, you’re going to rapidly run out of things to read. for one, anything written before like…1960 is out. for another, that one shining individual whose work alone you’re willing to read doesn’t exist.
every adult has done problematic things. the only difference is the scale and nature of the mistakes made
sure, voting with your wallet is a thing. I’d definitely be willing to buy a book by a currently-living author who isn’t always kind to their fans, and not by one who committed sexual assault. but there’s nuance to the simple act of reading or liking a book, separate from giving the author money, and it must be approached as such
what did the author do that you don’t like? how much of it comes out in their work? in what ways? what aspects of their work have value to you? is there enough value in it for you to continue liking it, even if you don’t condone the way the author behaves? will you continue recommending it to others? is the negative behavior confirmed to your satisfaction? can you, personally, reconcile disliking the author with liking their work? (because in the end, it’s a matter of personal choice and conscience)
saying “this author did/does bad things, so anyone who reads or likes their work must also be bad” is an appealing way to absolve yourself of the need for critical thinking. and guess what? that’s an important part of life
it’s easy to say “this is cancelled because the author sucks” for works you don’t care about. but someday, it will be something you love under the microscope. count on it. you’ll have to grapple with these questions, and it won’t be easy
people need to develop the skills to deal with complex topics in a thoughtful manner, and I worry that they’re being encouraged not to
YESSSS!!!!!
Lets talk about this.

i don’t think people get what these fires mean for California.
the fight against climate change is not “for the future” or “coming up”
no. it is now. for california, for me, for the 37 fucking million of us who live here, it is now. it is now. it is fucking now. there is smoke blanketing my entire city. the other day there was ASH FALLING FROM THE SKY. there are people who are living with red, terrifying smoke, right outside their front doors. i can’t open a window because it all smells like a fucking fire. the sky is entirely grey, because it’s all fucking smoke. my entire fucking STATE is affected by this shit. my STATE.
by the way, california? our population is 71% of England’s. an entire country.
and yes, there are issues other than climate change that have caused this shit, of course. but I’ve grown up through two droughts. I’ve watched the fountains in my town get shut down, I’ve watched them grow dusty and old. I’ve fixed my sprinklers to account for the new water restrictions. I’ve grown up knowing each winter was colder, each summer hotter. I’ve grown up seeing this shit.
every year, we come to fire season, and i hope and watch and desperately wish that it’ll be okay. that thousands of people won’t lose their homes this year. that i won’t have to walk home with a red sun blazing over me and smoke so thick i can’t stop coughing. that I’ll be able to step outside and not smell it. that people won’t lose their towns, their belongings, their livelihoods. every damn year.
my entire state is kindling. my friends outside of cali reach out to me about the fires, telling me they hope I’ll be safe. but i can’t go outside without inhaling lungfuls of smoke. i can’t do anything but watch as hundreds of thousands of acres burn.
2.5 million acres have burned this year. million. 2.5 fucking million acres. 20x what burned last year.
my state is on fire. my city is covered in smoke. a one year old boy DIED because of these fires, and who knows how many will join him by the time this is over.
so yes, please, donate. but i am tired as shit of people pretending that wildfires in california should be normal, that this is okay, that this is just “something that happens” no. no. vote for politicians who support renewable energy. vote for politicians who care about climate change. because, in the grand scheme of things, what we need is restrictions and laws and regulations. one person installing solar panels isn’t going to do shit.
those bottom photos are san francisco. my state is burning.
you can donate to help here. but this isn’t something that’ll go away. it’s going to get worse and worse, unless we fucking do something.
tags from @astrum-cipher. this is a huge fucking devastating problem.
I woke up this morning and could see the smoke before I even opened my blinds, just form the yellow quality of the light peeking in under the door. I’m from Oregon. I grew up with a color pallet of grey and green and blue, of rainy winters and forests that are supposed to stay lush through the summer. With this smoke, it’s dark like it is under the blanket of clouds in the winter, but this brings no rain, just ash falling from the sky. I don’t want to open the blinds because the world outside is orange, not green. I don’t want to watch the world I love burn. This is Not Normal.
The whole west coast is on fire.
IM TORN INTO PIECES
These are surprisingly easy to make and amazing-not-amazing how white evangelicals never seem to mention the huge amount of biblical passages about how the white supremacist capitalist police state they worship is so thoroughly anti-christian
the overlap here is HIGHLY compelling.
This is actually a fascinating concept called the marginal propensity of consumption. It BASICALLY means that each additional dollar to a poor person (Like someone on minimum wage) is comparatively more valuable than each additional dollar to a wealthy person (like a millionaire or billionaire) because the poor person is more likely to go spend it on a good or service whereas the wealthy person will stick it in an offshore account.
With the poor person, it will continue changing hands within the economy and get spent more often, leading to higher economic output. The wealthy person takes that dollar out of the economy by sticking it in a bank account to grow their wealth, and the dollar effectively becomes useless and stops changing hands.
The US president cites concern over mail-in voting, despite little evidence of widespread fraud.
Yall, I don’t want to be alarmist but…. that’s… concerning.
Top Republicans, including Mitch McConnell, immediately pushed back on the idea - floated by Trump earlier Thursday - that Election Day be d
Well, and least we got this about of it. Even Ted Cruz had to slam on the damage control brakes.
I just want to clarify- even though McConnell and other republicans have slammed on the “NO NO NO we aren’t doing that” brakes- we should still be concerned.
Between this and Trump’s refusal to commit to election results, he is deliberately undermining his base’s trust in the electoral process. By citing “voter fraud” as his reason to try to delay the election, now even though the election WILL happen on time, if (when) he loses, he can claim that the election was illegitimate- that it was voter fraud, that he warned us, that he knew it was rigged, that Congress didn’t do enough to stop all the ~fraud~ that he knew was there, and he will refuse to step aside peacefully.
He has been placing armed mercenaries in major American cities run by democratic mayors, and he is laying the groundwork to claim that the election is illegitimate if (when) he loses.
You need to vote, so that both the Electoral College and the Popular vote are against him, and when this asshole finally breaks the tradition of the peaceful transition of power (which is what he is planning), when you need to be willing to protest and fight more than you ever have before.
Like, I do not want to be an alarmist here, but we could be looking at like… Congress having to send in armed men to remove this man from office, and depending how the Republicans in power and his base handle that, we could be looking at a level of violence in the transition of power that is literally unheard of in the US.
^^^^^^ This.
This si why you vote blue even if you’re in a scarlet state with no hope of winning the electoral college.
This is why you vote for Biden even if you loathe him with every fiber of your being.
This is it.
If we are to have any hope of maintaining a fair system and avoiding an all-out dictatorship, the numbers have to be absolutely unambiguous.
Go. Vote. Blue.
Fuck. Joe. Biden.
Look, YES fuck Joe Biden. And I know that asking people to vote for a shitty option because the other viable option is FAR worse is hardly convincing. I know.
But a vote for Joe Biden isn’t just a vote against Trump. It’s also a vote for all the positions that Biden would get to fill, rather than leave Trump’s people (like Barr and DeVos) in charge.
It’s also a vote for all the judges Biden would appoint (Which is likely at LEAST 1 Supreme Court pick.)
It’s a vote for all of the 700+ positions that the President appoints and Senate confirms (Not just being generally better than Trump’s picks, but ACTUALLY GETTING FILLED. Trump still had over 170 unfilled appointments as of this year.)
And honestly, at this point, it’s also a vote that says “You shouldn’t get to undermine our electoral process and threaten the peaceful transition of power and STAY IN POWER.”
Joe Biden is a bad candidate, and I wish we had gotten nearly anyone else. But I do believe that he’s a candidate who like… generally respects our political process, who could competently staff an administration, who could be reasoned with and compromised with, and who isn’t going to try to crown himself Emperor. Biden probably won’t spend hours a day on Twitter instead of like, reading security briefings. It SUCKS that we have to aim as low as “isn’t literally trying to power grab himself a dictatorship” but the other option is to forfeit your vote and let the dictator get reelected.
So please, for the love of fuck, can we try to temper our disappointment with pragmatism? We should always vote for the best possible option, even if the best possible option is kinda shitty.
