What I liked about Snape’s character writing in HP was the fact that he wasn’t always completely bitter and mean and in fact, had potential to be a geniunely good person as himself. In the books it was shown that he was actually supportive and honest with Lily when he was a child. When he was a kid, he actually made Lily feel better when she was bullied by Petunia, he reassured her when she was worried she wouldn’t be good enough, he made her feel special. The entire arc in Snape’s story was based around the idea that Lily was someone who brought out the good in him, but it wasnt just her who was the good part of him. Ironically, he was somewhat a good person from the beginning. That’s why Lily got closer to him and befriended him , and geniunely liked him, far more than James and Sirius at first.
in the first place, when they first met, it was Him, who made her feel better and worthy, that being a witch isn’t so bad, and that there is a place where she’d be able to find herself. You could say, in a sense, Snape kind of brought out some good parts in Lily too (and, maybe, hadn’t it been for Snape, Lily wouldn’t have gone to Hogwarts and found her people).
Simply because he was open and honest. He didnt chase a dream of becoming a death eater, he didnt think about wizard supremacy, he didnt sink too deep into his misery, he was just. Himself. He approached her because he was just interested in her and geniunely liked her without any ulterior motive. Even the shenanigans he did with Lily (stealing Petunia’s letter) were not too bad, and something children would do.
That’s why Lily put up with his flaws and bad decisions for so long. Because she knew him from back then and knew he can be good. That’s why she spent years with him even when there were red flags. Nobody, including Snape himself, knows that Snape was one of the few who contributed to Lily’s growth as a person. She knew Snape had potential to be better because she knew that better version of himself in person, from back then. It is when Lily realized Snape has gone too far, she cut ties with him, because she’s not obliged to fix anyone or allow anyone to hurt her.
She said in the book that He made that decision, to be a death eater. He chose to go the wrong path and ruin their friendship
This whole childhood story was a very small fragment in the book, but it was important.
Snape didnt magically become “evil” and mean. It was his choice, even if the wrong one, even if influenced by his environment. He wasn’t born evil/mean/bad either. His entire personality isn’t inherently evil. The book showed that he was someone who could bring out the best in people, even if it was just one person, even if it was just a small thing.
