Beauty standards are a disease. I saw this TikTok of a girl who got chemical burns on her armpits from some kind of waxing trend and the doctor said it would go away faster if she didn’t shave. She apparently continued shaving over A CHEMICAL BURN because… why? Because she was so disgusted by her own body hair that she would rather suffer for longer? Because other people would shame her for it? A guy would never feel like he has to do that. She was like 15 as well. Young girls should never feel like being pretty is more important than being healthy. Not to mention shaving over that could definitely introduce infection and deepen the wound. In my opinion, shaving itself isn’t necessarily bad, but it becomes bad when a girl feels like she needs to do it, even prioritizing it over her health. I just wish this didn’t happen.

I know a lot of people yell, “but it’s their choice!!” Idk how to tell you this but this is not a choice. This is a societal problem only pushed onto girls.

Responding to the feminist conversation surrounding shaving/being anti-shaving with 'I think body hair is unsightly on everyone and men should shave too' is like suggesting we close the gender pay gap by paying men less instead of paying women the standard salary. Like, how about instead of setting everyone back to a regressive standard, we work towards removing that standard altogether?

(Not to mention the fact that it's an entirely useless proposition. It would never work like that for obvious reasons. If you know why things are set up that way to begin with, and for what purpose.)

It's like. Other women don't have to change their appearances for your own comfort.

But also I know that if I wasn’t the only one on this street with unshaved legs, I'd feel less like a freak. More at ease.

It's just a thought at the back of my mind, maybe others are judging, maybe not. It does not stop me from staying unshaved— most of the times.

If "women= unshaved" wasn’t the arbitrary diktat in media I watch, and in ads I walk by daily. I'd be more comfortable with myself.

I also know that when boys bullied me for not shaving my legs and armpits, it was not only because i was an unshaved girl, but also bc I was the only unshaved girl of the class. Broke unspoken rules I wasn’t even aware existed. But the other girls had the memo. It's not their fault I got bullied, obsvly, but at the same time, if only half of them didnt shave, I wouldnt have been bullied bc nonshaving would have been seen as normal.

The same paragraph can be wrote about make up.

Wearing glasses used to be a reason to bully someone. Braces too. But not anymore. It stopped. Know why? Because so many kids started to wear glasses (almost half?) and wear braces that it became common. Normal. Not a flaw. Not an anomaly. And you can’t exactly bully half a school.

I also know that the one time I felt most comfortable with being fat was when I went swimming with friends and, out of 5 ppl, 3 had stomach rolls like me.

really galling amount of people misinterpreting this post so i'd like to clarify. i'm saying that when discussions about patriarchal beauty standards and the way women are heavily shamed and coerced into eschewing their own natural state of being (hairy) are occurring, it is unhelpful (AT BEST) to interrupt and say that the reason YOU remove the hair from your body is because of sensory issues. that's not what we're talking about. stop asking for validation for doing something that society at large wants you to do. stop derailing the conversation because you feel uncomfortable about being made aware that you, for whatever reason it is, adhere to harmful, unfair and ridiculous beauty standards. you're stepping into the middle of an important conversation that needs to be had and making it all about you. shut the fuck up forever.

also quite frankly i think a lot less people would experience sensory issues if they let their hair grow out so that it isn't bristly and rough and irritating. and i cannot help but wonder why these sensory issues aren't as predominant in men. maybe you're uncomfortable with the hair on your body because you've been taught to be uncomfortable with it. just a thought.
