Eating (with out making a mess) while walking alertly is something that could only be learned living in New York. I've finessed the ability to multitask with my body: walking to the subway while zipping AND buttoning my coat while eating a pink lady. Granted, there were points that I looked like a rotisserie pig running away from the fire pit, trying to hem up my exposed innards from the sudden change in temperature, but I didn't have to halt at any given point to bundle up more. There's also the fact that while mobile, I also had to bundle my scarf up more, take off my cap and ear buds, while one hand was busy holding a half-eaten apple.
