Ellie Williams was a loser. A big fat loser. Not only does she obsess over dinosaurs and space, she's found herself three hours deep in what most people would call 'stalking'. But she was definitely not stalking, no, this was research. Pure, innocent research.
Ellie scrolled through your tiktok, replaying every post at least three times before moving onto the next. She'd already went through your Instagram. And your Pinterest...and she's somehow found your Tumblr too. Okay...it might have been a little stalkerish.
But she wasn’t doing it to be creepy! No! She just...thought you were really cool.
Woah Ellie, that's probably the lamest thing you've ever thought.
See, if Ellie wasn't an absolute wuss and loser, she'd have gotten your number the very first moment you walked into homeroom in Freshman year. God, you were amazing. She can still remember the exact outfit you wore. A ruffled black skirt and ripped tights, your makeup dark and bold. It was a bit intimidating, to be honest, but that quickly melted away when you laughed at Jake Sanders' awful knock knock joke.
It's a little surprising she hasn't gone through all your social media before now. Although, you only just now followed her on Instagram, which she freaked out over when the little notification popped up on her screen exactly one minute after school had ended.
"Ellie! Did you buy milk like I asked?" Her bedroom door slammed open, Joel standing in the doorway with a raised eyebrow.
Ellie gasped, her phone slipping from her hands. "Jesus, Joel! Knock next time!"
Joel leaned against the door, a small smirk on his face. "Hey, you did the same exact thing last weekend. Pay back."
"Not very mature adult of you." Ellie muttered, leaning down to grab her phone, checking the screen for any cracks. None, thank God.
Joel let out a small chuckle, "The milk, Ellie?"
Ellie groaned, standing up now, "Okay, I forgot. Sorry. I'll go grab some."
Nodding, Joel pushed himself off the doorframe, "Good, I want to make some lasagne tonight."
"That's a horrible idea. Remember last time?" Ellie pulled on her jacket and grabbed her headphones as she walked towards the door.
Joel followed Ellie downstairs, "It wasn't that bad. Come on, kiddo."
Ellie picked up her keys, opening the front door, "Oh, it was BAD."
Joel let out a sigh as Ellie walked down the steps, giving her a nod as she turned around to give him a mock salute.

"Who actually drinks almond milk?" Ellie muttered, squinting at the cartons sitting on the shelves.
"The vegans." A very familiar voice behind Ellie stated.
"Oh shit!" Ellie spun around, bumping into the shelf behind her, letting out a groan as her head collided with the hard metal.
Goddammit, that's the second time today!
You let out a loud laugh, hands flying to your mouth, "Oh my God! Are you okay?"
Ellie stared at you, eyes widening at the sight of you. You continued laughing, a big smile on your face. Reaching up, Ellie rubbed the back of her head, "Yeah, yeah, I'm good. Really good." She cleared her throat.
"I didn't mean to scare you, sorry, Ellie." You giggled, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear.
Ellie looked back at the milk, lips quirking up into a small smile despite the back of her head feeling like someone hit it with a hammer. "What, uh, what are you doing here?"
You lifted your hand, holding up a carton of Oat milk. "Oat is better."
Ellie tilted her head, "Right, because you don't like whole milk." She stated.
You narrowed your eyes, "How'd you know?"
"You made a tiktok about it." She paused, eyes widening, "Not that I was stalking your account or anything! I just, uh, it came up on my-my for you page and um..."
"Oh, wait! I don't follow you on Tiktok!" You grabbed your phone, unlocking it before pressing a few buttons.
"You don't have to, you already do on Insta-"
"That's you, right?" You shoved your phone into Ellie's face, her profile picture staring back at her.
"Y-yeah." She stammered.
You pulled back, looking at your phone with a smirk. "I like your profile. It's pretty."
Ellie swallowed, heat rising up her neck, "Oh. Thanks."
You watched her, cocking an eyebrow, "We don't talk much."
"Yeah we do."
"No we don't."
Ellie scrunched her nose. You're right, of course, the only times you and her ever talk are because you and Dina are friends but even then it's only ever a few sentences.
"We should...change that...then..." Ellie suggested, eyes set on a small speck of paint on the floor. Her fingers played with the loose string on her jacket, fiddling with it before pulling it off with a sharp snap.
"Yeah, we should. Are you free tomorrow?" Your voice came out softer than before.
Ellie's gaze snapped back up at you, eyes slightly widening before she mustered out a quick "Yes!" Which she almost immediately covered with a cough, "Oh, yeah, sure, that sounds cool."
Smiling, you stepped forward, "You like space, right?"
Ellie opened her mouth, then closed it. Then opened it again.
You look like a real idiot right now, Ellie.
She nodded, letting out a small breath, "Y-yeah, I do."
Looking down at the carton of oat milk in your hands, your voice slightly shy, "I know this really nice café, it's space themed because it's connected to a cool, uh, science museum but we don't have to go to the museum we can just go to the café and grab a coffee or a tea or even juice if that's what you like, but, um..." You trailed off, biting your lip.
Ellie watched you for a moment before saying, "I'd like that." God, she really hoped she wasn't blushing.
You lifted your gaze back up at her, small smile spreading across your face, "Okay! It's a date then?"
Date? DATE?!
Ellie froze, her jaw dropping slightly as she stared at you. She could barely think, let alone speak but her eyes fell on your smile, the corners faltering the longer she took to answer.
"It's a date." Ellie nodded, shoving her clammy hands in her pockets. Yeah, she was definitely blushing now.

Chapter One: The Newcomers
Warnings: cursing, weapons, cranks?
"You never let me do anything!" Your voice rang out through the mountains, multiple people turning to watch as you stormed away from your father.
Vince followed close behind you, his face red and eyes narrowed. "I let you do plenty, (Y/N)!"
You whipped around, scoffing, "Oh, like what? The laundry?" You pointed a finger at him. You loved your father, really, truly, but his constant dismissal of your skills was rather infuriating.
Vince stepped closer, lips set in a deep scowl, "Oh don't start with that now-" a voice cut him off.
"Hey, Vince, they're back and they have people with them." Max, one of your best smugglers, said, rubbing his neck, a sheepish look on his face.
Vince sighed, turning back to you. "We'll talk later." Then, walked off with Max following in tow.
You watched him go, lips pressed together and fists clenched tight. Stupid. How ridiculously stupid this entire thing was. He let kids younger than you go into places crawling with cranks but you're not allowed to simply keep watch with Harriet and Sonya.
You thought about it for a moment, then turned and walked after the two, Max's words intriguing you. People don't often show up around here and when they do, you don't want to miss out on it.
You approached your father and the group gathered in front of him, Harriet and Sonya standing with them.
"Who are they?" Vince asked Harriet, gesturing towards them.
She looked at Vince, stepping forward, "They're immunes." She pointed back at them, "Caught them coming up the mountain."
Your eyes slightly narrowed, turning to look at the group. There seemed to be around eight of them. God, they looked terrible.
"Did you check 'em?" Vince asked, hands on his hips as his eyes scanned the group.
Harriet pointed at one of the boys standing near the back,"I know this guy, Aris. I trust him." She shifted, standing next to Vince now.
You glanced over at the boy, eyes narrowing, his name familiar. You must have heard it before...oh, right! Harriet and Sonya talked about him all the time, about the maze and their escape which means these guys must have come from WCKD.
Vince stared at the group. "Well, I don't. Check 'em."
"Hey, boss..." one of you father's men started, staring at one of the newcomers. The girl's breathing was rugged, the sound painful and unpleasant, then, without warning, she collapsed forward, body hitting the ground.
An older man rushed forward, "Brenda! Brenda!" He called out.
Vince turned to Harriet, his stance changing immediately. "What's going on?"
The group stared in confusion, standing around, not knowing what to do. You stepped closer, the slightest bit of dread filling your stomach.
The older man held onto the girl, Brenda, repeating her name, over and over, the worry clear in his voice. Vince moved in as the girl tried to apologise, her voice strained and raspy.
"What's going on with her?" Vince crouched beside them.
The man shook his head, "I don't know." He leaned in more, "Brenda, are you alright?"
You watched as the man tried to get her to speak but your gaze drifted to your father, "What the hell?" He muttered, his hands pulling back the bandage on her leg to reveal an ugly bite mark.
He jumped back, pulling his gun out, "Crank! We got a Crank!"
The group panicked, one of the boys jumping in front of her, holding his hands out, "Wait! Wait!" He moved towards your father, his steps frantic.
You stepped forward, hands flying to your knife at your side as Vince shouted, "Step Back!"
The boy didn't let up, he stepped closer, "Listen, Okay!" He stammered, "This just happened, okay? She's not dangerous yet."
Vince rounded on him, eyes blazing, "You shouldn't have brought her here!"
Everyone was watching now, confused and concerned at the commotion.
The boy stepped back, trying to speak, "I know-" but Vince cut him off, "We let Cranks in here now, the safe haven doesn't last a week! Step back!"
"I understand, okay?" The boy held put his arm, his voice quiet. "I understand. Just listen, please." He pleaded. "I told her you could help. Okay?"
You watched Vince lift his gun as he muttered a small "No."
"There's got to be something you can do." The boy spoke quietly, trying to get your father to listen. He seemed to care a lot about that girl.
Vince stayed still for a moment, then said quietly, "Yeah, there is." He cocked his gun, "I can put her out of her misery."
"No! No!" The older man shouted, two of your father's men holding him back.
You stared at the girl on the ground, then at Vince. You knew he was making the right choice even if it felt cruel. One Crank in here would turn into two and then into a million more by the end of the week.
"Vince! That's enough! Let him go." A familiar voice made everyone freeze. You turned to see Mary rushing towards the group. "Let him go!" She repeated to the two men holding the older man.
Vince glanced at her, "She's infected, Doc. There's nothing we can do for her."
Mary stepped forward, eyes on the boy. "No, but he can." She smiled. "Hello, Thomas."
You stared at her in confusion, Vince letting out a small "What?"
The boy, Thomas, let out a shaky breath, "You know me?"
"Interesting." Mary stepped towards the girl, "It's makes sense they'd put you in the maze."
You looked at Vince, his expression just as confused as everyone else's. Mary continued, "I was worried they'd kill you after what you did."
Thomas swallowed, incredibly confused, "What I did?"
You moved around, standing closer to Harriet and Sonya now, tuning out Mary and Thomas but your eyes stayed on the girl, her breathing getting worse.
"WCKD seriously did a number on all of you." You whispered, to the two girls, hand still wrapped around your knife.
Harriet lowered her gun, "Yeah, they really did."
Your fathers voice pulled you back into the conversation, "He was our source." He said in disbelief.
All of you stared at Thomas as Mary ordered two men to take Brenda to the tent. She gestured towards the tent, "Thomas, come on."
You all watched them walk away, the older man following quickly. You sheathed your knife and moved up to Vince.
"I'll deal with them, Dad." Your voice came out softer than you wanted it to but you didn't find yourself caring when he simply nodded weakly then walked away, an odd expression on his face.
You looked back at the group, letting out a breath and stepped forward. "I'm (Y/N). You all from the maze?"
The group looked around at eachother before one of them, the tallest boy with sandy hair, replied "Pretty much. You?" He spoke with an accent, words gentle.
You looked back at where Vince had gone. "No, I grew up with my dad. Vince."
The group exchanged looks again before Sonya came over, grabbing Aris's arm. "Come on, Aris, we'll show you around."
Harriet sent you a smirk before walking off with the two, Sonya already launching into a ramble.
You turned back to the group, scratching your head. "You guys look like shit. Come on." Turning, you made yourself across the area, glancing back at the group.
The blonde caught up with you quickly, although you noticed the slightest bit of a limp as he stumbled over a rock. "I'm Newt." He introduced himself, holding out his hand.
"Newt, huh?" You shook his hand, lips quirking up at the side. "Like the animal or the scientist?"
He let out a scoff and looked forward, "The scientist, obviously."
You chuckled, looking back again at the others, making sure they didn't wander off. Newt glanced back too.
"Minho's the one with the never ending glare on his face." He gestured at the boy, Minho scowling at him. Newt grinned, then pointed at the boy beside Minho, "And that's Frypan."
Frypan waved at you, a small smile on his face. Waving back, you glanced at the girl trailing just behind the two boys. Something about her gave you an odd feeling. And not the good kind.
Newt's gaze landed on the girl, leaning in, he quietly murmured "That's Teresa. She's probably just worried about Thomas."
You hummed, eyes shifting away from her and onto the tent in front of you. You pulled open the flap, walking inside, the four others following you in.
"Uh, just take whatever you like, all of these are just spare stuff that we've saved." You gestured towards the piles of clothes and blankets sitting around on wooden tables.
The four quickly went to look around the tent, clearly desperate for warm, clean clothes. You slowly wandered over towards Teresa, pretending to examine the pile of jackets she hovered near.
"You alway this quiet?" You picked up a small green jacket, giving Teresa a quick glance.
Teresa flinched, letting out a small squeak. "Oh my God, you scared me." She let out a nervous laugh, clearing her throat. "I'm just...worried about Thomas, I guess."
Dropping the green jacket, you picked up a long brown coat, fingers brushing over the fur hood. "Well, he seems like he can handle himself." You held out the jacket towards her, "Relax."
Teresa smiled, taking the jacket, her eyes shifting towards all the tents outside. "I'll try, thanks."
You nodded, hands on your hips. You still couldn't shake that uneasy feeling around her, that feeling in your gut just waiting for something, anything, to confirm it.
"Hey, do you think we could get something to eat? I'm starving." Frypan's voice interrupted the whirlwind of thoughts buzzing around your brain. The others turned to look at you, waiting for an answer.
"Absolutely." You moved towards the entrance, tilting your head outside. "Let's go."
The three boys grinned, eagerly following you out the tent. You didn't notice Teresa staying behind.
Newt walked up beside you again, wearing a new coat now, his shoulders seemingly lighter than before.
"Didn't think the Right Arm existed, to be honest. But here you are. That shank was right, like always." He said, a small smile on his face as he put his hands in his pockets.
"Thomas?" You asked, raising a brow.
Newt nodded, letting out a small chuckle. "Can't tell if he's brave or just stupid."
Your lips twisted up into a smile, looking down at the stones crunching under your boots. "I can already tell you guys are going to stir some shit up. Can't wait."
Newt grinned, looking down at you, "Just you bloody see."

AN: I originally thought about making it a Harriet x reader because I love her so much but I also love Newt lol. I will probably be making Harriet x reader oneshots though. 5 Tiny Writing Tips That Aren’t Talked About Enough (but work for me)
These are some lowkey underrated tips I’ve seen floating around writing communities — the kind that don’t get flashy attention but seriously changed how I write.
1. Put “he/she/they” at the start of the sentence less often.
Try switching up your sentence rhythm. Instead of
“She walked to the window,”
try
“The window creaked open under her touch.”
Keeps it fresh and stops the paragraph from sounding like a checklist.
2. Don’t describe everything — describe what matters.
Instead of listing every detail in a room, pick 2–3 objects that say something.
“A half-drunk mug of tea and a knife on the table”
sets a way stronger tone than
“There was a wooden table, two chairs, and a shelf.”
3. Use beats instead of dialogue tags sometimes.
Instead of:
"I'm fine," she said.
Try:
"I'm fine." She wiped her hands on her skirt.
It helps shows emotion, and movement.
4. Write your first draft like no one will ever read it.
No pressure. No perfection. Just vibes. The point of draft one is to exist. Let it be messy and weird — future you will thank you for at least something to edit.
5. When stuck, ask: “What’s the most fun thing that could happen next?”
Not logical. Not realistic. FUN. It doesn’t have to stay — but chasing excitement can blast through writer’s block and give you ideas you actually want to write.

For the writers struggling to rid themselves of the classic ‘said’. Some are repeated in different categories since they fit multiple ones (but those are counted once so it adds up to 100 new words).
Note: everyone is entitled to their own opinion. No I am NOT telling people to abandon said and use these. Yes I understand that said is often good enough, but sometimes you WANT to draw attention to how the character is speaking. If you think adding an action/movement to your dialogue is 'good enough' hate to break it to you but that ruins immersion much more than a casual 'mumbled'. And for the last time: this is just a resource list, CALM DOWN. Hope that covers all the annoyingly redundant replies :)
