i grew up as someone who was bullied often. even when i walked alongside the so-called popular crowd, i was always different, close enough to be seen, but never enough to fully belong. some accepted me, others made it their mission to remind me i was out of place.

there was one girl, abby, who never did. she was beautiful, confident, and the only person who truly stood beside me through it all.

i remember sitting in class while a group of girls whispered and snickered behind my back, their cruelty hanging in the air so loudly i could barely breathe. i started to cry, quietly, because i couldn’t take the humiliation anymore.

abby saw it.

in front of the entire class, the teacher, everyone, she stood up and said, “if you have a problem, say it to her fucking face.”

she got kicked out of the classroom for it.

but i never forgot it.

ever since then, i learned what real loyalty looks like in a friend. i learned that love is sometimes loud, protective, and unafraid of consequences. and because of her, i defend the people i love with that same ferocity.

i have no hunger for paper crowns, or borrowed authority that does not burn from within.
