nights at the cafe with seungmin

the cafe was quiet again that night.
you were in one of the slowest hours of your part-time barista shift. the lights inside were dim, and a light rain was falling outside. you stood behind the counter by the espresso machine, while seungmin leaned against a chair, adjusting the milk frother.
âi think we should try some latte art today,â he said, serious, but with a smile in his eyes.
âlatte art? last time your foam turned into a disaster,â you said, giggling.
âyes, and i want to make up for it,â he defended himself. he fiddled with the foam for a while, and you sipped your coffee as you watched him.
there were no customers, so time moved slowly. besides the music playing in the cafe, there were only occasional hisses from the coffee machine and the soft clinking of cups. you occasionally glanced at the order book, while seungmin exaggerated his movements as he stirred the foam.
âlook, look!â he exclaimed suddenly, having drawn a little flower in a cup.
âno need to show me, iâm already laughing just by looking at it,â you said with a smile.
âso⊠you like it?â he asked, eyes wide.
âyes, yes, i like it. but i havenât forgotten last time,â you said, waving your hand.
for a few minutes, you both worked quietly, focused on your own tasks, but your eyes kept wandering to each other. sometimes seungmin would watch the latte you made while stirring his own coffee, and sometimes you observed him fumbling with the foam.
âso⊠whoâs the better barista?â he asked suddenly, in a teasing tone.
âobviously me,â you replied without hesitation.
âcome on, last time you put salt in your cappuccino instead of sugar,â he said, laughing.
âthat was an experiment,â you defended yourself, waving your hand. âyou need experiments to improve.â
at that moment, the door opened and closed as a customer came in. you both immediately went into work mode, smiling as you took the order, prepared the cups, and returned to the espresso machine.
after the customer left, you both settled back into your chairs with your coffee cups. the rain was still falling lightly outside, but the cafe had a warm, cozy feeling.
âsometimes this silence is nice,â seungmin said, staring into his cup.
âyeah, but silence alone isnât enough. it needs to be funny sometimes too,â you said, tucking your hair behind your ear.
âfunny?â he asked, curious.
âlike when you wrote your name in the foam the other day,â you said, laughing.
seungmin immediately placed his coffee in front of him and spread his hands.
âno, no! donât tell anyone. only you saw it, okay?â
âdonât worry, iâll keep it a secret,â you said, smiling.
then you both sat in silence for a while, sipping your coffee as steam rose from the cups. the soft music in the cafe, the sound of rain, and your quiet little conversation made the tiredness of the shift disappear.
âare we working the same hours again tomorrow?â seungmin asked, yawning slightly.
âyeah, same routine,â you said. âbut maybe weâll practice some more latte art, huh?â
âhuh,â he said, smiling. âiâm not brave enough to lose to you.â
you both returned to your coffees. the silence was still there, but it wasnât lonely anymore; it was the quiet of a slow evening spent together.
actually, right now iâm also working part-time at a cafe, and my coworker is a tall blonde italian, a senior engineering student đđ»đđ» i wrote this partly thinking about him đ
