Headcanons, Pt. 4

Mary Macdonald

>pretty tight-knit with her extended family. when she got her letter, mcgonagall came and explained the situation to her immediate family, but said that nobody but they could know. her cousins assumed she was off at a fancy boarding school and drifted apart from her, which really disappointed mary.

>really nervous on the way to hogwarts, since she knew nobody and nothing about the wizarding world, but put on a confident face and introduced herself to everyone on the train in hopes of making friends.

>loved pink to a concerning degree. specifically a deep raspberry pink. she decorated her room in shades of pink and red, and a majority of her closet was pink. 

>loved coca cola with a passion. 

>had a miserable habit of falling in love with people too late. 

>had an enormous collection of sunglasses that she called her "sunnies". 

>was born on march eighth, but was absolutely convinced as a child that her birthday was valentines day. she realized later on that it wasn't, of course, but celebrating her birthday on both days became a tradition in her family.

>scrapbooked everything. photos, cigarette buttes, receipts, movie tickets, wrapping paper, anything that reminded her of a memory. she had a box under her bed in her dorm that was specifically filled with scrapbooks she had made over the years. 

>never quite felt right having magic. she loved it, but as the war progressed, she grew to dread it, and eventually just escaped back into the muggle world. 

>constantly made and gave out friendship bracelets. it was practically a status symbol to have more than one.

>had a concerning addiction to lipgloss.

>had a younger brother and lots of cousins, but always wanted an older sister.

>absolutely loved abba. her favorite songs were "when i kissed the teacher" and "dancing queen".

>mary knew everyone. everyone knew mary. everyone had made a bet with mary at some point, and everyone owed her a favor.

>notorious for meddling in love lives. she's very socially smart. even without being bribed, she loves to play matchmaker and try to get couples together. this either works terrifically or fails horribly. lily tries her hardest to get mary to stop, but it's impossible to pull mary away from chemistry. 

>never backs down from a challenge. she's the reigning champion of truth or dare and owns a flimsy paper crown from a christmas cracker with "truth or dare queen" written on it as proof.

>really likes the game marbles for some reason. no one quite knows why, but she begs someone to play it with her all the time. she also collects marbles.

>british with jamaican roots. she's extremely proud of her heritage and loves wearing her hair natural. she spends about an hour each morning on it.

>an amazing dancer. she moves fluidly and makes it look effortless, which caught everyone's eye at parties. 

>very physically affectionate, even with non-romantic relationships. mary kissed everyone: lips, cheeks, foreheads, hands, arms, anywhere she could reach. she loved to collapse dramatically into sirius's lap after classes ended. 

>friends with practically everyone, or friendly at the very least. she was extremely popular, especially in her year.

>mulciber attacked her for her blood status, trying to prove that no matter how popular a muggle-born could be, they were still beneath pure-bloods. he imperiused her, and it took a long, long time for her to recover. she often had trouble remembering things, and would zone out often. she spent the rest of the year in a depressive daze. lily tried her hardest to help, but it was sirius who finally broke the spell.

>had a tuxedo cat as her familiar in hogwarts. his name was mittens for his white paws.

>lived in bath before moving out of her parents' house.

>was the only serious relationship sirius ever had. they started dating in sixth year, broke it off for a while, then dated again at the end of seventh year and lasted until halfway through the war, when they fought over mary not joining the order. mary decided she couldn't handle the stress of dating someone who could die horribly at any given time and broke up with sirius. it was rough for a while, since he had moved into her apartment. she'd never been quite so lonely in her life.

Headcanons, Pt. 3

Lily Evans

>favorite authors are jane austen and agatha christie. has an enormous collection of charity shop books in her bedroom, which is mostly comprised of classics. is slightly pretentious about it, but only because she's miffed that a majority of her muggle classmates would refuse to read in their free time, then ridicule her for doing so.

>tried to form a protest when she was nine because her school didn't properly recycle. made petition sheets and everything. her family signed primarily out of pity, and the rest of the signatures came from intimidated peers. she wasn't taken very seriously, much to her frustration. however, lily evans is an unstoppable force, and an immovable object is only immovable until you find its weak point.

>anxiously keeps things organized, efficient, and on schedule, to disguise the fact that she's hopelessly type-b. her dorm room is immaculate, her bedroom is an disaster. has no idea what to do with unstructured time during the summer hols, so she usually ends up sleeping in the afternoon or milling around town, then feels guilty about being unproductive. 

>feels like a novelty in her own home. since lily's away for most of the year, whenever she comes home, it's a big deal to her parents. petunia does almost all of the chores and refuses to let lily help (mostly out of resentment that, as usual, petunia is the one expected to take care of things, while lily essentially gets off scot-free). this makes lily feel useless and ornamental; furthering the divide between the sisters.

>studies a lot, but more out of an intense fear of falling behind than a real desire to learn. she and remus have this in common and often study together, as well as hosting tutoring groups. lily feels out of place among the other hogwarts students, and though she's aware the fear is irrational, she's terrified of being "kicked out" of the wizarding world for not being good enough. she most likely has generalized anxiety disorder.

>gets her name from her maternal grandmother, lily jane, whom she dearly loves. she visits and writes her as often as possible, and is devastated when she passes away in fourth year.

>her familiar is a little owl named wendy. wendy is quite a social bird and gets along well with the other owls in the owlry. james absolutely adores her.

>loves fleetwood mac. she first heard them on the radio while shopping at woolworth's during the summer, and couldn't stop thinking about it until she finally gave in and bought the album.

>has naturally curly hair (somewhere around 2b) but was never taught how to take care of it, and so she mostly wears her hair wavy or straightens it instead.

>cannot decide for the life of her between tea and coffee. usually she goes for whatever keeps her awake longest, but any attempt she's made at picking a favorite has failed. she also collects antique tea cups and mugs.

>is chronically at the charity shops. has a growing fridge magnet collection, which is mainly comprised of cats. most of her clothes are either hand-me-downs from petunia, or thrifted from charity shops. when they were younger, petunia would help her patch up the holes and stains in her clothes, and sometimes even embroider them (if asked very nicely and given the right bribe). after their falling-out, lily struggled to learn how to do the same things herself, but eventually caught the hang of it.

>can bake, but cannot cook. for whatever reason, no matter how closely she follows the instructions, none of her meals turn out right. she gave up trying during her pregnancy and decided to just let james handle the food.

>looked up to alice longbottom a lot. alice was prefect the year that lily started, and eventually became head girl. she took lily and a few other students under her wing, and lily (desperately searching to fill the hole of an older sister figure) took to her immediately. even after graduating and joining the order, lily was still in awe of alice, and was delighted to be pregnant at the same time as her.

>was popular from year 5-upwards; not just in her class, but all throughout school. she didn't consider herself as such at first, since she was used to being labeled "weird" and "intense" back home, but especially after befriending mary macdonald, lily realized how beloved she was. it wasn't hard to see why, from an outside perspective: unless you were lily evans herself, you'd never associate the tumultuous anxiety she experienced with the charming, easygoing, witty young persona she portrayed. 

>used to celebrate her birthday at the same time as severus during school years. she'd sneak down to the kitchens and persuade the house-elves to make them a cake, then eat it with severus as they swapped gifts. though she didn't continue the tradition after their falling-out (and had no urge to ever again), her birthdays felt strangely lonely, right up until the last.

>worked her last few summers at flourish and blotts alongside selina sapworthy.

>loved the outdoors. would go outside at every opportunity to explore. 

>she liked to visit hagrid and chat, and taught him her recipe of rock cakes, which petunia had taught to her as children. the secret was to soak them in hot tea until they softened.

>never found it very easy to make friends with girls. she didn't have a true female friend until mary macdonald and hestia jones came along after the falling-out with severus.

>loved to take photographs. most of the pictures in harry's album were taken by lily.

Headcanons, Pt. 2

Sirius Black

>every morning at breakfast, sirius would have remus time him to see how fast he could complete the daily prophet's crossword. his record was a minute and two seconds.

>woke up last out of the group. he had to be shaken awake every morning, much to his annoyance. he never really fussed over his appearance, unlike james; he just rolled out of bed and still managed to look gorgeous.

>took arithmancy and care of magical creatures as electives. he threatened to take muggle studies, but after realizing that his parents would demand the school to take him out of the class, decided it wasn't worth the trouble. he liked the challenge arithmancy gave him for the first few weeks, but quickly cracked the syllabus and got bored. care of magical creatures was a soft spot: he loved animals, and was really good with them. 

>liked working with his hands. he bought the motorcycle himself (with some help from lily) and spent the entire summer working on it. he and james devised the flying spells, but the rest was done by hand at the potters' house. he was also ambidextrous and one of the best duelers in the order. 

>never really studied. he'd flip through textbooks for something to do when he was bored, but ultimately he didn't need them. he had a photographic memory and flew through tests with ease, often going well over the word limit on essays and astounding his teachers. 

>his troublemaking and prank-pulling was more of a result of restlessness and boredom than ill intentions, though that's not to say he wasn't inclined towards violence if he felt like it. he specifically targeted severus just after saying he was bored: he didn't seek severus out, but rather chose to torment him simply because he happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. 

>the only person who could best peter at chess. it didn't happen often, but on occasion, he managed to secure a stalemate or (if he was particularly lucky) a checkmate and beat the reigning champion.

>a ladies' man, but not a womanizer. he attracted more attention from girls because he didn't show any interest in them; unlike james, who was more of a pursuer. girls weren't exactly a high priority on his list of things to do, especially because he wasn't interested in the sort of commitment that a relationship requires. he only dated three girls total: mary macdonald being the one that lasted the longest. the rest were just non-committal snogs in broom closets. tacking up the muggle posters of bikini-clad women was more of a rebellious statement to his parents than a personal interest. 

>his familiar was a great horned owl named alastair - a gift from his uncle alphard, who bred messenger birds. alastair had a horrible habit of trying to take off with james's cat, christopher, which the two boys tried desperately to remedy, but to no avail. after sirius was imprisoned, alastair was released into the wild. sirius tried to call him back after escaping azkaban, but alastair was never seen again. 

>his most prized possession was a muggle black leather jacket, gifted to him for his seventeenth birthday by the potters. he barely took it off after they died, and the loss of it after azkaban haunted him for the rest of his life. 

>his worst subject was potions. he wasn't bad at it, per se, but it wasn't exactly his strong suit. it also didn't help that slughorn was trying to recruit him into the slug club at every turn; it was easier to be average at potions than to attract even more unwanted attention. 

>he and lily took a while to warm up to each other. she despised him for bullying severus, not to mention his class privilege and ability to effortlessly pass his classes. he didn't like how fixated james was on her and thought that his best mate was just wasting his time. it was funny to watch her shoot him down so harshly, though. once she stopped hanging around severus and started warming up to james, it was a bit of a shock to sirius's system: he'd never in a million years expected her to reciprocate james's feelings, not after the years of hostility she'd shown towards him. and it certainly wasn't easy to get used to james spending more time with a girl than with him. but slowly, surely, sirius and lily started to grow closer as well, and once the war started? they were inseparable. where james enabled sirius's impulsiveness, lily forced him to slow down and think things through.

>liked quidditch, but not to the extent that james did. he attended the matches to cheer james and gryffindor on, but other than those occasions, he got bored at quidditch games and only came when james dragged him along.

>the second of the marauders to transform into his animagus form. james managed it first, being the transfiguration prodigy he was; peter was the last, as he'd always struggled with theory-based magic the most. trying not to speak with the leaf in his mouth for a month was the worst part; he and james in particular had to restart numerous times.

>a bit overfond of firewhiskey once he ran away from home. james had to actually get onto him about his drinking habit more than once.

>had a phase where he smoked muggle cigarettes. he borrowed one from remus once in seventh year (since remus claimed it helped settle his nerves after a full moon) and never looked back. he tried to pay remus a sickle or two for the packs, but remus never let him: he just told him to consider it a thank-you for the full moons.

>was the first one to outright suspect remus of being the spy. while he loved his friend, the wizarding world was never kind to werewolves, and even helping on full moons couldn't totally remove a stigma so ingrained in society. they got into a shouting match after one mission when remus started spying on the werewolves for dumbledore, and that was when the marauders truly began to fall apart.

>his wand was made of ebony with a dragon heartstring core. it was around 15 inches long; inflexible, restless, and excellent for defense against the dark arts. 

>his relationship with regulus was... complicated, to say the least. the house of black was insufferable to sirius: haughty, selfish, egotistical. despite being an average pure-blood house like any other, they took pride in their inclusion on the sacred twenty-eight's list (something sirius never ceased to bemoan) and considered themselves "practically wizarding royalty". many other pure-blood houses found them vain and annoying; dangerous to be sure, especially given their wealth, but behind closed doors, the blacks were often the butt of the joke. sirius did try a few times to convince regulus to run away with him, but regulus was tired of being in sirius's shadow all the time. he was eager to please and climb the social ladder, and had stubbornly made up his mind that joining the death eaters as the best way to do so. after his death, sirius felt more pity than anything else. regulus had been his brother, after all, but the consequences of his own actions had caught up to him. he left his room untouched after moving back into grimmauld place; when he walked in, he could almost pretend for a moment that regulus was still alive, still eight years old with a crooked-toothed smile, begging for sirius to play quidditch with him. but then the shrine of voldemort's newspapers would catch his eye, and he'd close the door with a sigh, the moment broken.

Headcanons, Pt. 1

James Potter

>a pickpocket. he nicks all sorts of things - quills, sweets, other trinkets. just for fun, of course. sometimes he goes for something with a bigger gain, like the school snitch, but most of the time it's little things. the other boys are immediately exasperated whenever james pops up with the trademark "i got something" grin. 

>likes to sketch. he mostly doodles and isn't really interested in art beyond drawing, but he loves to try to capture how his broomstick or nicked snitch look, or how lily's hair looks in the sun (this does not go over well when she finds out).

>grew up playing with muggle and muggle-born kids in his neighborhood. after fleamont and euphemia had resigned themselves to being childless, they moved to godric's hollow in hopes of still being able to interact with the children there. whenever james was miraculously born, they raised him alongside the other kids and taught him that although some of them didn't have magic, and that they weren't allowed to know he had magic, they were all equals and should be treated with respect. having grown up in such an environment, james was nothing less than utterly appalled at the blatant pure-blood supremacy at hogwarts, especially among the students his age or younger. 

>sorted people into three groups: good, bad, and unimportant. most hogwarts students were sorted into the "unimportant" category, but slytherins were always "bad" and gryffindors were always "good".

>his dream was to become an official player for the english quidditch team. he'd settle for puddlemere united (his personal favorite) if he wasn't good enough for england, though.

>half indian. his maternal grandparents were pure-bloods who emigrated from india (specifically the haryana area). punjabi was euphemia's native language.

>a hopeless romantic at heart. decided that lily evans was the perfect girl to marry at age thirteen and never looked back. sirius teased him endlessly for his pathetic attempts to seem "cool" in front of lily (none of which actually worked; honestly, they made the situation worse if anything). 

>tried one of remus's muggle cigarettes and immediately spat it back out. he didn't tell remus and sirius to quit, but he did make them smoke outside.

>knew a surprising amount of muggle culture from growing up in godric's hollow, but still managed to completely miss the mark on practically everything. he thought that movie theaters were like slideshows with moving pictures until lily took him to see star wars. he ended up going back seven times to see it. it was his all-time favorite movie.

>his favorite muggle band was the beach boys. sirius liked queen, remus liked david bowie, and peter liked the beatles, but the beach boys were james's all-time favorite.

>an incredible storyteller. james had a habit of dramatizing or exaggerating everything he could to make stories more exciting (even borderline fibbing as and when he saw fit) but nobody really cared much because he truly had a gift for telling stories. even lily couldn't resist listening in, despite her refusal to take them as fact. he loved making up his own stories, though it was far easier to embellish an existing narrative than to create one from the ground up. he mainly created the stories for harry, who was an enamored audience member with the useful lack of ability to criticize.

>took a lot of pride in his appearance. he was the first to get out of bed in the morning, usually to sneak out of the castle to train at an unholy hour for quidditch. when he got back, he'd spend an equally outrageous amount of time trying to simultaneously clean himself up and maintain a "windswept" appearance. this "primping" earned a lot of mocking from sirius. he was secretly a bit self-conscious; something his overinflated ego hid.

>discussed very serious plans for harry's future as the best little league quidditch player to ever exist with a very disinterested lily and sirius. lily gave harry the snitch onesie and sirius sent the child-sized broom for harry's birthday as gags, but unfortunately, james triumphantly took it as them agreeing with the little league plans. harry's victory loop around the house on the broomstick did not last long after the vase from petunia broke.

>a good cook. not an exceptional one, but in comparison to lily's inability to make anything other than cereal or toast without somehow setting it on fire, james's cooking was good enough that leftovers never lasted long. before going into hiding, he and lily would help out the order by hosting the occasional dinner. he and alice swapped recipes as she enjoyed a good bit of spice in her meals. 

>was well aware that part of his induction into the order at such a young age was due to his wealth, and a bit uncomfortable and insecure about it. he was ecstatic about being invited at his age, of course, but it wasn't a surprise that the order had no ministry funding and thus relied on donations for support; and, lo and behold, he and sirius (members of two of the wealthiest families in england) both were encouraged to join right out of graduation. 

>not so much of a prankster than a troublemaker. his ideas of fun were more dangerous, thrilling, and less within the school rules than harmless or fun pranks, which he found more boring and time-consuming. peter and remus were pranksters, but james and sirius were troublemakers. 

>just barely 6'0, but he claims he's 6'1. this never ends to entertain sirius, who's just slightly taller (6'0 1/2).

>his familiar was a ginger cat named christopher. christopher did not get along with sirius's owl, much to their dismay. christopher lived with the family in godric's hollow, but ran away after halloween and was later found and taken in by neighboring muggles.

>exceptionally skilled at transfiguration, and loved to try and push its limits. he never dedicated as much time and effort into any other subject than he did with transfiguration. mcgonagall tried her best to convince him to pursue it after graduation, but his heart was set on quidditch. that is, until the war.

>always wanted a big family. despite his parents' doting, he grew up rather lonely, and dreamed of having a lot of kids. enough to form a Potter quidditch team, he would joke (something which never went over well with lily).

>took an interest in muggle football after being introduced to it by lily's father, who was a big fan. he chose to root for manchester united, since their colours were reminiscent of gryffindor.

hello hello good morning ren!! thank you for the asks i’m still thinking of bartytuney like the appeal is that on the surface they seem like a ballet girl punk boy which is… overdone. not interesting. but in my mind this isn’t a muggle au like they run into each other when bcj is picking pandora up from somewhere in the muggle world like a carnival or something and petunia (on a break from vernon, sort of drunk, with her friends) says something really biting and he immediately whips around with a grin. it’s the fleabag “so what do you do” (fleabag leaves) “fuck you then”. they run into each other when he’s smoking outside her ballet school and he’s like oh you’re that girl who was bitching about her ex. and she’s like i don’t remember you who tf are you.

i think it’d be interesting for barty to put together oh shit she’s lilys sister. she’s sort of vicious and evil with it. she doesn’t know he’s a wizard and he’s lying and keeping it that way for statue of secrecy reasons but also because he is a blood supremacist. if she ever found out they’d have a huge blowup fight and break up.

i think they never “date” but they are together for like 4 months where they both sort of have their own lives and friends and bcj shows up to her house in the middle of the night and at first she spends like 2 hours ranting about vernon and he having never met vernon is like “he sounds like an absolute tool fuck him.” and for a while petunia is back with vernon when they’re hooking up but it’s still sort of non conmittal and they both have this sort of deep underlying poison and wanting in each other that they recognise. anyway i have to ponder some more but these are my thoughts
