Who names their kid Cnut? Asking for them to be bullied..
What I liked most about the special episode was how much Minase and Hirukawa had clearly grown as a couple. Minase had a nightmare because of his anxiety about being left. Hirukawa noticed he was off right away. They talked about it. They talked about it again and again. And it makes sense it would be something hard for Minase to let go of because he had been left so often, even by Hirukawa. He needed that reassurance.
I also appreciate that Minase kept saying he wanted to get married, but he also saw marriage as not necessarily permanent (I really wish he had sent that text to his mom) but we were shown there are other reasons people want that equality - he wanted that ability to share his life with his friends, to be congratulated, to be open, but without that acceptance it was still too much of a risk.
How they handle their relationship impacts them both. The way they communicated and balanced and asked what each needed and said what they needed was really good for me.
I have seen some criticism of how the ending of Miseinen and the special episode felt incomplete and not realistic. It felt very realistic to me. Especially the anxiety Minase has about coming out. His anxiety about being left behind and the continuation of his surface level relationships with his friends and his mom. He is very aware of how sharing those truths would leave him even lonelier and more than likely unemployed. We like for our fictional characters to stand up to their bullies and push the narrative forward by standing completely in their truth, but to do that in the real world has real consequences. Maybe one day he will be able to stand tall in all that he is, but for now being able to show love and be loved is all that is needed for this character. Look at how much pushing Hirukawa had to do to get him to admit his anxieties. I would have loved for him to send that text to his mom, but this felt in character and realistic to me.
In the same vein, Hirukawa felt very in character for me. He is use to being in the outskirts of society so he does have a little bit more of a laissez faire approach to dealing with their peer group. He absolutely would shout from the mountain tops that he and Minase are together, but he also understands there are consequences and repercussions for being a martyr (he knows it best).
The scene where he talks about his one sided crush was so well done. He open the door for everyone at that table to be open and accepting of him and when they showed they were not ready for that he made sure that it did not expose Minase to any backlash. How he talks about marriage with his colleagues when asked. He is use to the lonely and more adept at handling it. It does not mean it does not affect him, but he understood it long before Minase did. He found his person and that is enough for him.
All in all, I loved it and will be rewatching it soon.

A random thought that popped in my head with their image in mind 🍁
Me showing my little sister a picture of Chika: *squealing* he’s a literal angel!
Sister: ok
Me: No like his favorite food is strawberry cake but he also likes any kind of sweets with strawberries
Sister: aww
Me: He also likes playing the koto and his grandpa
Sister: that’s cute-
Me: *sudden monotone voice* he was also emotionally repressed at a very young age because his father blamed him for every misery in his life, got forcibly pulled into a toxic environment where he had to fight to survive despite his misery because he got blamed no matter what he did, so he distanced himself from all his loved ones because he believed that he wasn’t deserving of their love and would only hurt them, resulting in fear of attachment, and when he finally saw a light in his life when he was staying with his grandpa, that also was deprived of him by his toxic environment that didn’t allow him to escape, which firmed his belief that he wasn’t deserving of love because he would only hurt the other party, but it took a lot of healing in the koto club and a pure confessed from the girl he liked to make him realize that no he is deserving of love and he is allowed to love someone, tho that fear of him hurting others is still in there but now he knows that he has a strong emotional support in his life and can live and love freely from now on
Sister: …… What the fu-
Me: *squealing voice again* he also can’t sleep without hugging something which is adorable
