Penda proposes Toronto Tree Tower built from cross-laminated timber modules

Plants and trees sprout from the modular units that make up this timber-framed high-rise, proposed by architecture firm Penda for Toronto. Penda, which has offices in China and Austria, collaborated with Canadian company Tmber for the Toronto Tree Tower project. They propose an 18-storey residential block that would stand 62 metres tall, with a modular structure made from cross-laminated timber (CLT).

Wood would also clad the building’s staggered walls, and trees would grow from the homes’ generous balconies. “Our cities are a assembly of steel, concrete and glass,” said Penda partner Chris Precht. “If you walk through the city and suddenly see a tower made of wood and plants, it will create an interesting contrast. The warm, natural appearance of wood and the plants growing on its facade bring the building to life and that could be a model for environmental friendly developments and sustainable extensions of our urban landscape,” he added.

China is building an incredibly cool “forest city” that will combat pollution

China is using trees as air filters in the world’s first “forest city.”

The country has started construction on this endeavor — which is expected to combat air pollution, improve local biodiversity, reduce sound pollution and reduce air temperature — and it is slated to be completed by 2020.

Liuzhou Forest City, situated in southern China’s Guangxi Province, will be 175 hectares and situated along the Liujiang River.

It will consist an array of buildings from offices and schools to apartments and hotels, and will run on renewable energy sources like geothermal and solar energy.

The city will be home to 30,000 residents, who will be able to access the main Liuzhou city through a fast rail line. Read more (6/28/17)

Pollution-fighting Vertical Forest buildings coming to China

Two living, breathing buildings will be able to produce around 130 pounds of clean oxygen a day.

China has pollution problems, and one Italian architect could have some answers.

The Chinese city of Nanjing is getting a Vertical Forest, a set of two buildings stylised with around 1,100 trees and a combination of over 2,500 shrubs and plants.

Paris just passed a new law that allows anyone to plant an urban garden within the city’s limits. Upon receiving a permit, gardeners can grow plants on walls, in boxes, on rooftops, under trees, or on fences. They can cultivate greenery in front of their homes or offices. They can grow flowers, vegetables, and fruit. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo’s goal is to create 100 hectares of living walls andgreen roofs by the year 2020, with one third of that greenery dedicated to agriculture. (*)
