The Forest: Bouldering on the Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway connects Shenandoah National Park in VA with the Great Smokies National Park in NC. The road boast endless mountain vistas and is know as 'America's Favorite Drive'. Although these breathtaking views are what the Parkway is known for, we come for the rock. This winter inspiration has been found in an area known as 'The Forest' just 18 miles south of Afton. The quality of the greenstone as well as the variety of lines and features make this 3 1/2 hour day trip (from Richmond) more than worth it every time. Arriving on an early winter morning you may be greeted by an ominous fog saturating even the steepest of overhangs. Come mid morning the sun wins out and its time to chalk up. We brought the camera out one day to showcase a sampling of chill established lines, just the tip of what The Forest has to offer. Within a short hike it is evident that there are great virgin lines still waiting to be sent. We always have at least one project to obsess about on the drive home.
