And if I said they want to be together but only push each other away
The final entry for Mermay did not quite manage to become finished for the final day of May, but I wanted to be sure that I could properly draw what I had in mind: basics of merfolk anatomy, as illustrated on a rainbow trout merm! Er, somewhat simplified, but my style is simplified in general. Enjoy, and happy June!

Titles
Here's a piece about an interesting parallel between Kai and Nya that I found: how they react to titles.
Nya:
She hates depending on other people and is always trying to be as independent as possible, so she firmly rejects any label or title she's given. And even if she doesn’t necessarily hate most of them, she still wants to be more than that. She refuses to fit into a box when she's actually so much more. She wants to be perceived as her full self and not only the parts of her that are convenient for other people.
Kai:
Kai's self-esteem is very fragile, so when he gets a title that tells him he's valuable, he latches onto it. He craves validation and a label marking him as "good enough" is perfect for that. I believe this is also one of the reasons he was so obsessed with the Green Ninja.
Kai also uses those titles as a shield, a façade to hide his true emotions. Even if they might not be entirely true, he will adapt to fit into each specific box. After all, if he shows people exactly what they believe, they won't bother looking deeper and so they won't notice the weakness and ugliness beneath the mask.
Although as a final note I have to mention that a lot of Nya's titles are demeaning because of misogyny while all of Kai's are empowering.
Both of them have issues with showing vulnerability but while Nya uses her "perfect" image and independence to push people away, Kai tricks them into believing a mask.
do you look like me when you fight
Lloyd and Ras are such an interesting Duo. Complete narrative opposites, designed to push and pull at each other like magnets.
First, we've got Ras. Someone who refuses to build connections or show compassion to others because he believes everyone in this world is bound to betray one another eventually, when their goal becomes more important than companionship. Someone who preys on people's deep personal desires and uses them against those he is meant to aid. Someone who believes the world is an unforgiving and cruel place, and the only way to survive is to use others as stepping stones and remain on top, untouchable. Who uses his anger and hatered towards the world and channels it, turning it into strength. But in the end, Ras is a Man, who's agression is a deeply concealed hurt that never found real comfort. He ends up pushing away any being kind enough to show him compassion, instead, he suffocates his vulnerabilities, refusing to acknowledge them, blaming everyone except himself and making himself as big as possible to drive the insecurities away. Because vulnerability is "weakness" and he cannot stand to see himself weak ever again.
And then, Lloyd. Imprisoned by his own compassion and sense of duty. A life of someone who suffered so much for others and sacrificed so many parts of himself, that sometimes when he looks at himself in the mirror, he doesn't recognize his own reflection anymore. Someone who Has every right to resent the world, who trusted and loved and got hurt because of it way too many times, and yet he bears it quietly and accepts it every time. A man afraid of the hatered that builds inside him in the process, who fears himself more than he fears any enemy he faces. Who saw first hand, what these feelings can lead to, because he himself Has been damaged beyond repair by people who have been wronged by life and in turn they ended up hurting and ruining lives of others. Someone terrified of becoming that. Afraid of his anger, his rage and hurt, a heart that bleeds and suffers and wails within. Fearful of everything that wants to claw its way out of his body, leaving him awake at night, unable to breathe. So he bottles all that hurt inside and with all that hatered with nowhere to go, he ends up hating himself instead. Vicerally. Until all objective thought is lost and every tragedy is his responsibility to bear. Until letting go of that responsibility - even though it drags him down into mental ruin - is far more dreadful than the inevitable self-destruction, because that burden is all that's left of him. And without it he doesn't know who he is.
This is what Wildlife is to me. A man who was so scared of getting hurt by others, he chose to become the monster. And a Man who was so afraid of becoming the monster, that he ended up being the one getting hurt instead.
In other words: the reason why Lloyd is the way he is, is because he doesn't want to become someone like Ras. And the reason Ras is on the Path he is, is because he is afraid of ending up as someone like Lloyd.
Ohhh and isn't this just the MOST WONDERFUL little situation these two have found themselves in.
