In all honesty, the girl isn’t certain how to take his statement. Is it simple exasperation? (That she’s dealt with many times, after all, and can usually joke in return without any more than (joking) disapproval.) Is it actual disappointment?

She isn’t certain and so she looks down for a moment, gaze focusing on the various bumps, cuts, and scrapes revealed by her slightly worse for wear clothing before she looks to him again.

“But… Baba……” she begins, her uncertainty very likely evident to him if no one else. 

“It is not as though I meant to fall into a tomb. How was I to know it was there?” Yet, there is another question that has plagued her since she fell through a weak point in the roof of the tomb, and the implications of it furrow her brow in worry. 

“This tomb… It was not in our records…… Why was a tomb not in our records?”

   “ Keep up with you? Tch. I am a lot lighter on my feet than you might think, habiba. ” Ardeth took her hand and slowly interlocked their fingers together. Then, he discreetly wrapped his free arm around Eshe’s waist just before pulling her close, the bridge of his nose inches from touching hers. 

        It was an intimate gesture, but for the two of them, it was acceptable.

        A soft melody floated throughout the room. The music was soothing, dreamy, and the volume had been set barely above a hushed whisper. As the two swayed in time to the rhythm, Ardeth let his chin fall on Eshe’s shoulder. He nestled into her hair, eyes closed, humming softly to the music.

“Yes, I know quite well how… skilled you are with your movements,” she had retorted low and teasing just before he had taken her hand. 

With the gentleness of how he intertwines their fingers, the way that he leaves so little space between them––she loves this, loves him––the smirk turns into a soft, warm smile instead. 

How long had it been since last they had danced? Then again, when was the last time she had felt strong enough to do this? 

The past two years since her pregnancy and labor, she had been weak, sickly, frail even. Not much more than a shadow of her old self. It had scared her, but it had even further scared him. Because they could both sense it. How close she came to Death… But this year had been better. This year she had gotten stronger. She had been determined. For their young daughter. For him.

And for her because, God, she lives for moments like this…

She moves with him, following his lead, relaxing a little more with every moment. By the time he rests his chin on her shoulder, when she can feel how relaxed he is––for once not as though the entire world is on his shoulders––a content sigh escapes her even as she turns her head ever so slightly. Just enough to lean more against him, to feel the way his humming reverberates in his chest.

After several more moments, she closes her own slightly misty eyes. 

“… I have missed this, אהובי,” she says at last, her voice almost quieter even than the music.

Posting this headcanon here from my personal:

I was going through pictures for icons when I came across this one, I now have this really random headcanon that at one point in the modern-verse, Eshe ‘borrowed’ one of markedbyfate‘s leather wristbands, and then she just kinda never gave it back. He didn’t seem to mind so eventually she altered it to be smaller, so it would fit her wrist better. 

After that, she pretty much always wore it, especially whenever he was away, and it made her feel better during those times, almost like a promise that he would return.

HEADCANON:

Earlier this morning, I had an idea for Eshe’s modern-verse and I talked it over with markedbyfate‘s writer. This is what came of it.

I’ve mentioned before on here that in the modern-verse, after Eshe has Zafirah, her health is never quite the same after that. She isn’t exactly ‘sickly,’ but she’s a little more… delicate? 

Eshe would hardly be up to going out through the desert and translating after that point, and then there’s also taking care of Zafirah. 

So here’s my thought: After the events of the first movie where Ardeth’s father was killed, Eshe applied for and ultimately received the job as curator. 

I believe she probably knew that Ardeth was struggling not just with the loss of his father but with the fact that he couldn’t just drop being Chieftain to take up his father’s work at the museum. So she offered to do it. Though Ardeth was reluctant at first due to his concerns as to her and her health, he agreed––with her insistence that she would be fine––that it would not only be a wise move (and whether openly admitted to her or not, it likely took some of the burden from him of not being able to take over his father’s work).

Eshe is qualified in the modern-verse as she did graduate from Cairo University. Most of the work is fairly straightforward, not too physically taxing for her and the mental side of it she can easily handle. The acquisition of new exhibits, creating the layouts for said exhibits, and organizing galas and fundraisers and other such events. 

Most days, she would take Zafirah along with her (especially as Zafirah is either eight or nine at the time of the events in the first movie. Which would mean that Eshe can teach her about the artifacts and everything, too). 

This would mean…

… that the curator position doesn’t go to a total stranger. 

… Ardeth can still spend time at the museum when he is able.

… Eshe can pass on the knowledge of what sort of information is filtering through and of any new artifacts. (as well as acquire artifacts that the Medjai would not want getting into the wrong hands).

… Zafirah can learn about her heritage and the responsibility and importance of the Medjai, incorporated into her regular (home) studies.

I am now incorporating this idea into my modern-verse and will shortly be adding it into the description of it.

She’s more than a little caught off-guard by the request, but then she certainly won’t let that stop her as she stands, offering him her hand even as a broad smirk appears on her face.

“If you think you can keep up with me.”

        Ardeth inhaled sharply. Uneasy eyes, equally as weary, shifted to and from Eshe’s hand as he contemplated. 

        First, there was reluctance. Then, his expression shifted to a defiant grimace, almost as if Ardeth were about to decline her offer in order to preserve what little dignity he had left. Though, just as quickly as the frown had come it had faded away. 

        With a deep sigh of resignation he interlocked his fingers with Eshe’s own. Tightly.

   “ Damn the cheap stuff. ” Ardeth kept his head down, but his words were directed at Eshe, “ You would think pharmacists would like to keep their customers as comfortable as possible so as to not receive complaints—or death threats, for that matter. ”

        Lifting his head, Ardeth shot Eshe a small glimmer of a smile. Despite being stuck inside a crumbling, humid tomb that smelled like the backside of a wet camel, Ardeth was still able to make the situation seem a little less grim. No matter how dark his humor tended to be. 

        As he waited for Eshe to wrap his arm with foul-odored bandages, Ardeth unconsciously rubbed his thumb against his friend’s knuckles. 

        It was a comforting feeling to have had someone’s hand to hold. Especially since this person was trusted. Ardeth did not worry about whether what happened here would be discussed beyond the four dusty rooms of the false chamber or not, which was completely fine with him, as long as the only ones discussing the matter were he and Eshe. And he would do anything to see her again once they got out.

         But he was way too stubborn to say such a thing out loud.

There’s a moment’s pause when he accepts the offer of her hand, her eyes shifting to where their fingers are intertwined.

Perhaps some might think it strange, but she has long been fascinated by his hands. With his long, thin fingers, his hands have always seemed so graceful, far more graceful than one would expect to find from someone who handles weapons daily. Now, as his thumb traces over her knuckles––does he mean to do that or is it the nerves?––she can even feel the roughness of his callouses, evidence of his training, of his hard work.

Even more oddly than that, however, there is something soothing about holding his hand, about the gentle stroking of his thumb. Of course she had known that she was worried, but she hadn’t realized quite how tense she had gotten until she felt herself suddenly relax.

Hadn’t she meant to be comforting him?

With that thought, she returns the pressure to his hand––steady, strong, unwavering––and gives a small smirk. (Honestly, she enjoys his dark humor more than she would likely admit, aloud at least.)

“Perhaps you may... take the matter up with them when we return to the city, and I may witness it, yes?”

Without waiting for his answer, her expression turns more serious again, yet she waits to begin cleaning the wound, rose brown eyes focused solely on him.

“Just  b r e a t h e ,  ידיד שלי.  It will help.” 

Her voice is surprisingly soft and sincere, warmer than her usual clipped or teasing tone. It is not often that others have seen this side of Eshe. In fact, the number could likely be counted on one hand, but now she may add another. 

After all, what harm could it do?
