new thing out now on the ol’ bandcamp
As stores become more relevant and responsive, experts believe that renaissance is a good thing for consumers and brands. But what about retail workers?
“Retail is a career,” Rachel tells me, her voice rising with annoyance. “I’ve had conversations with customers that leave me feeling badly about myself. People view this job as a punch-in, punch-out thing. None of us are dumb, but people think you don’t need to know anything to work here.”
“I’m not getting compensated for the amount of work I do. If I did, I wouldn’t be in debt. We work the rest of our lives to pay off that debt. We’re a permanent working class. A permanent poor class.“
hello again, i’m happy to finally announce the release of ‘excavations’. i’ve been hinting at this release probably since it was recorded almost exactly two years ago. these pieces were recorded at the same time as the ‘can you see it in the distance’ thing i released under the saturday night fireworks name back then and follow the same philosophy although by nature of its source material these are a lot less dissonant. samples of old techno demos from before vierzig skizzen was a thing, field recordings and digital feedback all mushed together in ppooll to induce faux-hypnotic states. small changes over long time.
oh also i guess i “officially” started recording for a new vierzig skizzen album today
my new album is now available to preorder and will be released next month. this is my first album as “lung cycles” and the first proper album I’ve released in 5 years, recorded over the past few months with a 7-piece band made up of other people whose music I’ve released on my label, lily tapes & discs. the download costs a few bucks but I have plenty of download codes to spare, so let me know if you’d like one. here’s the release blurb, written by my friend emmerich (aka distant reader)
I want to say this is Lung Cycles’ first full-length collection of songs in five years, but the word “song” feels out of place. A song implies a singer at center stage, a voice that plays ruler of the song’s little kingdom. There’s something deist about these new songs, as if the musicians are setting them up and then sneaking away quietly while the music continues to play. Lung Cycles aren’t erasing themselves from the picture, but they’re not imposing themselves on you either. They’re giving themselves the freedom to move into the background and observe the play of light and color and shadow, savoring the loose embrace of a warm night, making their richly textured collective dreams responsive to the outside world’s serendipity. Even though Ben Lovell says few words on this album, his delivery is composed and deliberate, and even his silences are articulate. He sings about anxiety and frustration, but he does it in the voice of hard-won calm. It’s like he’s speaking softly to a confidant late at night, recounting the strains of the day while acknowledging the need to let them go. Perhaps he’s just talking to himself while he’s on a mind-clearing walk, the kind he mentions in “Blue Rochester moon.” Even if he is, the outlook here is profoundly sane. Underneath the shallowness of our modern perpetual stress complex, we can find verdant nooks like this, as long as we can slow ourselves enough to notice them. This is a nook worth noticing.
haven’t really used this site in ages, but here’s a bit of news. i play some quiet parts on the amazing new lung cycles album. out november 2, in a batch with a new Hour album. mark your calenders!
i got mubi the other day and it’s sick
check this guy out casually giving Graham Lambkin a run for his music-recorded-in-cars money
since apparently a quarter of the year has already passed, i figure it’s a good time shout out some music stuff i liked in the past months. also some late 2017 stuff that i only heard this year. for some reason there’s a lot of that. so i guess here’s to the rest of the year slowing down the pace a little, so i don’t feel like i’m trapped in fast-forward all the time lol
Nabihah Iqbal - Weighing of the Heart: i guess this is synth pop, but to me it sort of feels more in line with Bark Psychosis or Bowery Electric. it’s super trippy bandcamp
talons’ - After talons’: i’ve been living with the demos for this album for almost 3 years, so for this album album to finally see the light of day was pretty wild. a lot of these songs have been released on the Chicago EPs before, but to me they sound their best on this album. bandcamp
Chino Amobi - Paradiso: describing this album as nightmarish kinda does it a disservice because it’s just too real. bandcamp
Gate - Highway Ghosts: i’ve been obsessed with Michael Morley’s various projects for the last half year. somehow this guy always finds the frequencies that resonate in my head just right. whether it’s through noisy riffs or calm ambience, like on this album. i can’t really explain it any other way bandcamp
bedbug - i'll count to heaven in years without seasons: spring music for this endless winter bandcamp
Cities Aviv - "Raised For A Better View": this guy has long found his own lane and i’m loving it bandcamp
Hour - Tiny Houses: this album somehow physically stops time bandcamp
naps - i do this for the ocean: one of my favorite things about naps’ music is that he always manages to create a space for his drones to inhabit. the tape rumblings and brushes carry just as much weight as the drones here imo bandcamp
Seth Chrisman & Nathan McLaughlin - Earth Tones at the Metal Show: maybe it’s cause i’m feeling like i’m being chased all the time, but the notion of slowing things down is getting more and more important every day for me. this is a good album to just lay down slow down your pace bandcamp
The Skull Eclipses - The Skull Eclipses: i didn’t care much for the last two Lushlife projects, but this one makes more than up for it. like his last proper album the production is handled by just one producer. Western Vinyl actually gave me a Botany CD for free once, but i never listened to it. i thought it was chillwave or some shit. but dang the beats on this album are incredible. and Lush sounds more inspired than ever. this will probably overtake Plateau Vision as my fav Lushlife project. bandcamp
The Fun Years - A Heart to Heart About Our Values: probably the most straight up droning music i’ve heard the fun years do, although i can’t say very familiar with their output on Springbreak tapes. website
American Pleasure Club - a whole fucking lifetime of this: idk this album makes me really happy bandcamp
The Righteous Yeah - Unknown Album: more Morley. i think? this time he’s doing loopy tape damaged soundscapes bandcamp
and last but not least y’all should check out the Lily Tapes & Discs bandcamp page for a lovely split between Cla-ras and Lung Cycles and an album by myself
got off work early today and while i rode the bus home through the snow this album by kenichi fumoto shot into my mind again. i was recommended this one by someone on Rate Your Music and haven’t found much info on it anywhere else. only that it’s a compilation of three earlier CD-Rs and that it’s out of print unfortunately. while it was apparently recorded in the guys bedroom with garageband, the songwriting is really outstanding imo. all kinds of weird synths and samples and stuff. miles beyond your typical "bedroom folk” album.
here’s an old mediafire link i stole from some blog
what’s up everyone, happy new year! i hope y’all started the year out in a good way. i want to let you know that i have an album out right now! it is called ‘travels in public’ and it’s getting released on tape by the wonderful Lily Tapes & Discs. you can get the tape on their page and the download on mine. LTD are also putting out a split between cla-ras and lung cycles, that is also amazing so check that out as well. i think the split tape also comes with a cool booklet by jeremy ferris aka cla-ras.
i worked on this album on and off for about a year. it initially started out as a companion ep to ‘everything is alway ruined’ but as i went on it got bigger and bigger until it became the thing it is now. i pretty much used every trick in my book and i’m very happy with how it came out.
i have some vague plans for more music stuff in 2018 but all in due time.
until then, thanks for listening!
hey yo this happened last week

2017. Author: _bort. here are some records i liked in 2017. alphabetical order cause i can't think of anything else
what’s up people,
it feels to me like i haven’t been shouting out music i like in a long time. so here’s my inevitable list of albums i liked this year. i tried to add bandcamp links where i could find ‘em. just as the last years i haven’t bothered with ranking them cause i’m lazy and rankings give me headaches. but trust me they’re all great.
in other news, i finished an album this year that will be released early january on @lilytapesanddiscs, one of my favorite labels of the last few years. it’ll be released together with a split between cla-ras and lung cycles. i’ve heard parts of that split and i can tell you it’s gonna be bangin! real announcement coming soon though!
with that out i hope everyone is holding out strong out there. personally this year brought a lot of weird shifts, that i definitely needed though and i think broadly speaking things are going in a good direction for me. not everyone is that lucky though and as every year it’s getting more and more important to protest and get involved to help fight the rise of fascism that gets scarier by the day. let’s turn things around!
